Catholic High School Football Star Expelled, Loses Scholarship Over Racist, Sexual Tweets

High School Football Recruit Loses Scholarship and Is Expelled for Offensive Tweets

Early last week, the Supreme Court decided not to hear cases pertaining to student punishment regarding their free speech rights on social media sites off campus. A day after this decision, a highly recruited New Jersey high school football star with a scholarship offer from the University of Michigan was expelled from his private school over what officials considered highly offensive tweets.

ESPN.com reported that Yuri Wright, a senior from Bosco Prep High School in Ramsey, N.J., who was sought after by all major college football conferences, was expelled and his scholarship offer from U of M withdrawn over sexually explicit and racially charged tweets:

“He was expelled from the school for the things he had written on Twitter,” [coach Greg] Toal told ESPNNewYork.com. “It was pretty simple really, what he wrote were some graphic sex things. This is a Catholic school, things like that cannot happen. It was totally inappropriate.”

The reason, his coach said, was because of a series of tweets that began last July. Among the schools he is considering are Michigan, Rutgers, Notre Dame and Colorado. A number of outlets reported that Michigan has stopped recruiting him.

The cornerback was warned by school officials for months, according to ESPN.com, to stop using the micro-blogging site because he couldn’t curb his language, but failed to comply at the time. His Twitter handle (@YuriWright3) no longer exists now.

Here are some of Wright’s “cleaner” tweets:

There are more examples of Wright’s even more explicit tweets here, which include the n-word and sex (via Huffington Post).

The Detroit Free Press reports recruiting analyst Mike Farrell from Rival.com, which ranked Wright in its top 100 recruits in the U.S., as saying these tweets have “ruined” Wright’s chance at attending his “dream school” — U of M — but he hopes this action against Wright will send a message to other recruits to “to watch what they put out in cyberspace.” Still, ESPN.com reports Toal saying he believes Wright will still do well in terms of finding a college.

USA Today reports that Don Bosco Prep, where Wright attended, went 11-0, won its sixth state title in a row this season, and landed itself at No.1 on USA Today’s Super 25 high school football rankings.

With regard to what students say on social media sites off campus and subsequent school punishment, the Supreme Court declined to hear three cases on Tuesday last week. According to the Examiner, school’s appealed for clarification from the higher court because “school officials cannot afford to wait any longer for an answer (as to these boundaries).” The cases brought to the Supreme Court included: a high school girl who created a website making inflammatory comments against another student; a student who created a MySpace page appearing as if it were the profile of school’s principal with incriminating content; and another MySpace page created by students that parodied the school’s principal.

Pop culture helped make this person who he is and what he thinks. To get an idea what our popular culture is all about these days watch “the Comedy Channel” any Friday or Saturday after midnight and hear with your own ears the filth that spews from the mouths of the white and black “comedians”. Blacks use the “N” word in almost every sentence when they aren’t using the “F” word. Of course women are degraded and the audiences think this is really “funny”. Rap music lyrics 100 times more nauseating but who cares? Racism and sexism is a vice when practiced by the majority, both are virtues when practiced by a minority.

This makes me sick!!! Whatever his teachers and parents did, he should have some feeling of self respect. But apparently he thinks because he can play football, no other rules apply except those on the field. No one has the right to demean our entire society because he can play football or any other sport. And that applies to other people who think they are “bigger than life>”

This incompetent dork couldn’t even pass a high school GED test, let alone qualify for college. I’m betting, though, that he’ll get admitted somewhere under an AA program that overlooks imbecility in favor of promoting athletes.

But, after having said that, I’ve got to agree he’s the usual quality of black athelete that swells the ranks of college and professional sports, and who have repeated trouble with law enforcement constantly.

If the rabid greed mongers in academia ever required athletes to be able to do college level work before they were admitted, most all college sports teams would consist of mostly whites.

This is just one more bit of evidence the American experiment in diversity is an utter failure.

The greatest lie today is that “diversity is our strength,” when it is unquestionably our greatest failure and will soon be shown to be just exactly that.

We have tolerated this type of behavior because of a perception of black culture, term used very loosely here, somehow must be validated. This under the guise of diversity. Any opposition is viewed as racist. Because all white people are supposed to know that blacks are overly sexualized, prone to criminality, sexually irresponsible and promiscuous, lacking in intelligence to distinguish civil conversation and proper vocabulary. Plus, all of the aforementioned, is the white man’s fault if it is indeed not inherent to their specific racial genome.

When hip-hop is celebrated as the “new poetry of urban youth” etc….what can you possibly expect. This coupled with the fact that actual literature and history is so distorted in public schools that the students have no idea of truth. When you add that graphically violent video games are the primary source of entertainment for males 9 to 34 years old, the problem just increases. The fact this guy is a jock just compounds the problem geometrically. Convicted felons take the field in the NFL every day of the week and are celebrated by people because of some misplaced blind loyalty to a city or team These same people that celebrate these criminal morally bankrupt thugs wouldn’t give them the time of day if they were just the next criminal on the street.

I would say even if you protect your son at home, if he is in the public school system you have a major problem. The misinformation is gargantuan. The indoctrination is rele

That isn’t going happen though. 1 out of 8 schools withdrew their scholarship offer. I’m not banking that the others will follow Michigan’s lead. Even if they did, a division 2a school would pick him up and he’ll still have a chance to get into the NFL.

Open and shut case. The school is private and has its own rules. Step outside what they find acceptable and it’s perfectly allowable to face the music.

“But what about the constitution it over rides any f’ing rule… ”

Indeed. Good thing that the Constitution sets the basis, but is not the entirety, of our legal system, huh?

Islam With you rights comes resposibility. This kid’s verbage insulted the private institute paying for his education. Bottom line, the kids mouth overloaded his a$$. He exsersized his right of free speech and the university decided they were not going to support that mindset. Go find another free bee somewhere else.

Hey genius, the 1st Amendment only says that “Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech…” Says nothing about whether a school can punish you for what you say.

      @Islamhater:
I am happy to say that private institutions are still free to decide who they wish engage and at what level. It is a private school, they don’t approve of the guy’s behavior/character, he’s out. I am sure he will find a public school where such behavior is accepted, if not encouraged.
The misapprehension of ‘freedom of speech’ is a big, big problem. Witness OWS. They may express any social or political thought they wish without fear of the GOVERNMENT repressing them, but they are not (or at least should not be) free to interfere with the rights of others in the process.

Am sure Eric Holder is dusting off the Discrimination Card. Under the Lefties, any and all inappropriate behavior is allowed. Especially if you are a minority. Remember the housing fiasco ? All caused because banks were forced to provide loans to the poor / minorities or the banks were ” discriminating.” The Discrimination Card is ruining America. Am sure The Supreme Court will eventually nix these cases. And that is why Obama / Democrats are trying so hard to do their Character Assassination against the court to their rabid, angry base .

Yeah, I was shocked to see this athlete was black. Eric Holder likes to have two sets of rules. Ones for whites and Asians; and a separate set for blacks and Hispanics. If there were anything Holder could do, I’m sure he would. I can’t see how he would intervene here though.

Why is it that the advice is to “watch what they put out into cyberspace” and not quit acting like they just escaped from the plantation?

The Supreme court has no jurisdiction here. If offenses are committed, then the consequences should be applied at the STATE level, and schools have the right to accept or reject applicants. What do we need Supreme Overlords for ?
