‘Backflip, Gainer, Wallflip’: This Time-Lapsed Viral Video Won Student $100 Bet Against Dad

When your dad bets you that you can’t do something, chances are you’re going to darn well try to prove him wrong. This was the case for Sam Morrison, a junior at Syracuse University.

The bet: Do a backflip every day for a year.

The stakes: $100

The proof that he did it: this video:

Morrison’s “backflip, gainer, wallflip, etc.” antics earned him campus notoriety. The Post-Standard has more on Morrison’s bet:

When he completes the task today, “he’s going to give me $100. He might be giving it to me as $100 worth of pennies. Hopefully it will be at least in ones, that will be manageable,” Morrison said this afternoon by telephone from his family’s home in Sparta, New Jersey.

[...]

On the website, you’ll find the first flip dated Jan. 1, 2011, on a moving sidewalk in JFK International Airport as the family was leaving for a Caribbean vacation.

Others took place in the snow around SU’s buildings, or in his Syracuse apartment. There’s the Vegas flip. The tennis match flip. The one at his sister’s graduation. There are ones into a watery gorge in Ithaca, and against a tree where the ground bursts into flames.

And there’s the holiday one, where a naked Morrison dressed only in tube socks with a Santa hat hiding his privates flips in a meadow.

The bet wasn’t so much about his ability to do a backflip, Morrison said. It tested his willingness to complete the four-second task, day in and day out, he said.

“Some days I didn’t feel like getting up to do it,” Morrison said.

Morrison states in the description on his YouTube post that he is hoping his next stunt could be “a backflip on EVERY continent, starting with North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia this summer”. If you watched the video to the end, you saw, he got his winnings in dollars.

The Post-Standard reports Morrison plans to graduate in 2013.

Some Blazers just can’t be impressed. I wish I was 18 again and could flip like this kid. Here’s a tip… watch it, be entertained, and smile. Not everything has to be about the end of the world (which isn’t happening)

Yep. I counted 262, and that’s generous because there were at least 2 clips that he did 2 flips on the same day, which shouldn’t count.

So if he’s playing soccer it must be a hell of a lopsided ball “Jackass” he’s a Rugby player. Truly stupider than soccer but definately not a sissy sport. I gice this kid credit backflips are not easy even at his young age I’m sure it helped him get chicks too so that whole discovering thing is just wrong. I think there are way to many old ass folks out there that need to take their metamucil and get the “Grumpy” out!

Good for him! That builds character! It shows real ambition and determination! I’m sure his Dad considered that to be a great investment. Dad must be very proud!

But it was worth much more than $100. I wouldn’t do it for that!

I was also impressed with the great originality in how he did it. Very innovative! He must be a great guy!

      365 opportunities to break bones.
Maybe it’s just me being cynical, but I wouldn’t want my son to do that just out of concern for his safety.

I was inspired by this video and just told my daughter that if she practices her splits every day for the rest of the year, I’ll give her $10. $100 is a little beyond my budget, but if she practices her splits, then that will help her in gymnastics.

He didn’t stick the landing in a few of those and therefore did not complete the flip. Dad wins…Nah, but seriously, what a fun project and much better than those lame “taking a pic a day in the mirror” time lapses that went around a few years ago. Nice vid kid!

Maybe it’s just me, but aren’t back flips dangerous? What kind of father encourages his son to perform 365 of them? Doesn’t this increase his likelihood of breaking his neck? My dad would’ve yelled at me & called me all kinds or stupid for performing back flips.

And, on a completely different note – finally, a YouTube clip with a great music track. Thank you for not using rap.

Obviously something this young man liked to do. Much safer than skydiving or race car driving or any of a lot of other things people enjoy doing just BECAUSE!
At least we still have the illusion that we are free to do what we want in this country.

He!! I enjoy cutting down ailing trees; do you have a problem with that?!?!?! It is dangerous.

Some of the clips show him doing backflips at a gym. It looks like he has gymnastics training. My daughter can do backflips on a trampoline no problem. She’ll probably be able to do a backflip from the floor in a year or so with continued training. Some Olympic gymnasts can do triple backflips.

It would be dangerous for someone without training to do a backflip, but it’s common for mid-level gymnasts. I see people doing backflips all the time; then again, I go to the gym two or three times a week.
