Politico’s Jonathan Martin Mocks Conservative Florida Voters in ‘Cracker Counties’

Talking to MSNBC’s Daily Rundown host Chuck Todd on Tuesday, Politico’s Jonathan Martin not-so-subtly mocked the Florida Panhandle’s conservative voters as those living in “cracker counties.”

“Chuck, a lot of the counties in the Panhandle, in north Florida, the cracker counties, if you will…more resemble Georgia and Alabama than they do Florida.”

For his part, Todd seemed unfazed by his guest’s disparaging comment.

  This is a rediculous thread. As a native Floridian, I know that “Crackers” are people who first settled in central Florida and raised cattle. The cracking of the whips that could be heard for miles around in the pastures gave them their nickname. Our former governer Lawton Chiles was proud to be a ‘*******.”

  Parts of Florida are called ******* Country (or Counties)… It’s not a bad thing or a raciest thing. It’s called ******* COUNTRY (Counties), because it was once and in some parts is still CATTLE country. The people working the cattle farms were called CRACKERS because of the CRACK the Cattle Whips made.

  Curious etymology. I had heard term explained as a reference to “cracking” or pounding corn instead of taking it to a mill.
  Regardless the origin, it is typically used as a pejorative. I’m from the South, and the term doesn’t mean anything to me. It tells me the prejudices of the one using the term, but I take no offense by it.

Why is the blaze censoring the word *******? You are as misinformed as MSNBC. The Florida “cowhunter” or “******* cowboy” of the 19th and early 20th centuries was distinct from the Spanish vaquero and the Western cowboy. Florida cowboys did not use lassos to herd or capture cattle. Their primary tools were bullwhips and dogs. Florida cattle and horses were small. The “******* cow”, also known as the “native” or “scrub” cow averaged about 600 pounds and had large horns and large feet.

The term “Florida *******” is used informally by some Floridians to indicate that their families have lived in the state for many generations. It is considered a source of pride to be descended from “frontier people who did not just live but flourished in a time before air conditioning, mosquito repellent, and screens.”

  Blaze uses Wordpress. As such they most likely use filtering scripts. Hence the delay from the time you post to the time your post actually appears. There are many scripts available for use as plugins to Wordpress. I expect this IS a configuration that can be altered.
  The thing is, they filter other pejoratives, and at some point, one of the trolls was probably calling people crac|<er in a racist or hateful manner, so the word was added to the filter list.
  Very little software is advanced enough to filter context which is what would be required to allow one to post about saltines but not pejoratively about Caucasians.
  Best advice is to figure out what is meant by the asterisks from context, and/or figure out how to get around the filter via misspelling or use a plural or replace a character or two with symbols or numbers that look like the characters for which they substitute; e.g., the back of a donkey is an "A$$."
