Returning Soldier Shocks Daughter With Surprise Birthday Visit During Her Kindergarten Class Presentation

Baylee Gets Surprise Visit From Her Soldier Father Who Was Serving in Afghanistan Among the many sacrifices that soldiers make to serve the United States, leaving their families behind is certainly one of the most difficult.

Children, especially, have a limited understanding when it comes to comprehending why their mothers and fathers aren’t home with them. That’s exactly why the video that follows is so touching. As you’ll see, one little girl in West Valley City, Utah, had a very special birthday surprise when her father, Sgt. Adam Page, who had been deployed in Afghanistan, showed up at her kindergarten classroom.

The incident, which was captured on video, shows five-year-old Baylee presenting a poster board to her teacher and classmates. On it, there are pictures of everything the little girl loves — chocolate, hot chocolate, chocolate sundaes and her father, among other individuals and items.

While she was talking about dad, he walked into the classroom, but she didn’t see him at first. When she did, she could not hold back the tears of joy. She ran to him and gave him a big hug.

“That’s my only birthday present I wanted is you,” she said while wiping tears from her face.

She kept asking “How did you ever make it, Dad? How did you ever make it?” [...]

“I really missed you,” she told him, and then hugged him again.

Luckily, the little girl will be able to see her father much more moving forward, as Page has been redeployed to Utah. This will be the first time he has lived with his family since young Baylee was born.

  Yes, happy birthday. I’m a former Marine (97-2005) and now have a daughter about that age. I didn’t have children when I was in the Marines; now that I have kids, I realize how much more my friends that had kids sacrificed than me.

  A little over a year ago my perfectly healthy 22 month old passed away from a variation of sids. She was very beautiful, just like this little girl, and I know that when I enter Heaven, I’m going to see her there, waiting at the gates to hug my neck and smother me with kisses. I so eagerly await that day.

I am balling right now.. I have a kindergarten Daughter, and I am 82nd airborne vet.. ’86-’89..

Wow! one of the most beautiful things i’ve ever seen.. I agree.. please bring all these guys home.. we will never solve the problems in the middle east..

  You are exactly right – bring ‘em home – all of them. Lets fix our own problems and have a stronger more prepared military here across the US. Reopen our facilities here that have been run down and shut down for the sake of building elsewhere.
  
  Our kids need us here. We should only be fighting and being away when we need to. A fireman is not always deployed to a possible fire, or to maintain a fire. They stay at the station; training and preparing for the call. We have the technology to strike anywhere within 1 hour. Let’s be efficient and effective.

No offense…but the article says:

I was in the military for 20+ years….NO ONE is involuntarily separated from their family for the length of time indicated here. Sounds like this family is separated by choice more than military requirements.

  Not nessisarily, we have had friends that have had unaccompanied tours to places families are not allowed before.
  
  Kid born, dad stayes home for a few months. Deploys–unaccompanied tour–second deployment–base of prefrence. Our friends all did their unaccompanied tours to get a better shot at getting their choice base afterwards.

  I also served. It sounds like you served during peace time. It does not say they haven’t seen each othe during that time. It reads as if he has been deployed…more than once. Thanks to all of our armed forces for doing their job to the best of their ability. Especially in light of the politicians trying to “run” the war. This could have ended a long time ago if we would have let the military run itself.

  And we have been at “peace” when?? I joined during VietNam, retired after the first Gulf War. Unaccompanied tours are typically 12 months, maybe 18. Even if the gent took the unaccompanied, he would/should have gotten his preference after that. This is 5+ years he has not lived with his family.
  
  I knew a few guys in the Navy that did that. Married; but wife refused to move with them. So they just saved their leave and went “home” when they could.
  
  Highly unlikely that this separation has been “forced”

  @Larr – dude just give it a rest – you’re bringin me down!. Why do you feel the need to calculate the timeframe so you can trash on this families happy moment. The article says it was the first time he has lived with his family since the kid was born. Since I currently serve, I think I have a better pulse on the opstempo than someone who served years ago. If you add together boot camp, training school (that can last 12 months or more depending on the MOS), and repeated deployments that leave you little time in between, it is entirely feasible that he has not lived with his family for 5 years. He may have been there on leave multiple times, but then had to return to his duty station. Due to his MOS, his family may have elected to live close to other members of the family for support, knowing that daddy would be gone repeatedly. That is a choice many families have to make in order to maintain some sense of stability for their kids and for the spouse at home to have a support network. Today’s military is not the peacetime military we had prior to 9/11 that made lots of concessions for where you wanted to go. In this day and age, everyone plays in the sandbox over and over again. That, my friend, is the reality of the way things are today. So lighten up, grab a tissue and rejoice in this families happy moment!

I did something similar for my daughter last year when I returned home from Afghanistan. It is something they will never forget. People ask why servicemembers do what they do? Look at the children sitting in the classroom and the smile on the little girl’s face…that is why.

How these teachers were able to talk after that and not spend the day with tissues permanently attached to their cheeks I will never understand. Wow. 400 tissue warning needs to preceed this video!!! Oh God bless this man and his family!!! Thank you soldier for the sacrifice you and your family have made to protect mine!!!! How we are not parading these heroes these brave men and women through the streets to show them how much we appreciate them is beyond me. Thank you to all the men and women in our armed forces. Sniff, sniff. Was this not shown on the local news? Kudos to the teacher for allowing them to do this. Not knowing if this was a public school, she could have been a union jerk about it, but apparently, she is not one of those. Heart-warming story.

  I will never forget them; friends, shipmates, battle buddies, airmen, and grunts… I was in AFG (as a civilian) for 4.5 years. Nothing is more important than going home to loved ones. God bless those who serve: military, first responders, and those behind the scenes.

I dont understand why we need to nation build and send ou troops into harms way, spereading them out all over the world, making us very vulnerable at home…

Heck if you warmongers really want perpetual wars, do it with drones. Bring our troops home before they get stranded in a foriegn land when we go broke and cannt get them back home.

  I agree Monkey…We started nation rebuilding long ago. We do not use the Military for the expressed reason it is supposed to be used for…DEFENSE through kicking the crap out of the enemy quickly…
  
  Now we wound them, rebuild their craphole country and take the negative abuse that we havent done enough good…I would have declared war on Iraq, bombed them back to runbble, killed Saddam and left. That would serve as a warning to all countries not to screw with us…

  BADDOGGY – I would have done the same thing – to make an example out of Iraq to the rest of the world. We should have allowed our military to access to all resources needed to go in and out as quickly as possible. For example, I would have bombed the crap out of Fallujah instead of sending troops in, which resulted in two bloody battles; and in the end the residents there hated us anyway.
