WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — Justice Stephen Breyer was robbed last week by a machete-wielding intruder at his vacation home in the West Indies, a Supreme Court spokeswoman said Monday.
The 73-year-old Breyer, wife Joanna and guests were confronted by the robber around 9 p.m. EST Thursday in the home Breyer owns on the Caribbean island of Nevis, spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said. The intruder took about $1,000 in cash and no one was hurt, Arberg said.
She said the robbery was reported to local authorities, but she did not know if an arrest has been made. The U.S. Marshals Service is assisting local authorities and the Supreme Court Police with the investigation, Marshals Service spokesman Jeff Carter said.
Breyer reported on his most recent annual disclosure in June that property he owns on Nevis is worth between $100,000 and $250,000.
The last time a justice was the victim of a crime was in 2004, when a group of young men assaulted Justice David Souter as he jogged on the street in Washington.
In 1996, a man snatched Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s purse while she was out walking with her husband and daughter near their home in Washington. Ginsburg was not hurt.
The justices return from a nearly month-long recess for a closed-door conference on Friday. They will next meet in public on February 21.
This is a breaking story, please check back for updates.

Feb. 13, 2012 at 8:57pmBan all machetes! Where are all the anti-machete folks?
The first murder ever committed in the whole history of the world was through the use of a ROCK! Remember Abel? You can ban all knifes, machetes, guns, bazookas, nukes, flame throwers, mace cans, baseball bats, and forks, BUT at the end of the day anyone intent on murdering will use anything available, even a rock. I guess we can start by putting everyone in cages, and chains. That should keep them from harming each other…

How much is this costing the tax payers? There must be some tax advantage to have a place in the West Indies instead of Stateside.

Feb. 13, 2012 at 7:02pmOk people. I think that this is reason enough to ban machetes nationwide. Machetes have been used to assault people daily. Equipped with an assault sheath, it makes for a formidable weapon of mass destruction. Everyone should do the responsible thing and call up their congressman for a ban on assault machetes. This kind of thing has gone on long enough, and its time we end the violence by passing a law banning all machetes.

Feb. 13, 2012 at 8:05pmIt does not really matter about foreign laws in the Caribbean. The Caribbean is rife with lawlessness especially some of the smaller islands. In addition dope smokers and drug trafficing are everywhere in those islands. My boyfriend and I were robbed on Jost Van **** island by a dope smoker who brandished a can opener. The island did not have a police force and any kind of law enforcement. After we came back we reported the crime to the state department and basically what we were told by officials is that the Caribbean is basically a cess pool for drugs and crime. I wish we had educated ourselves before we went. Everyone should be aware of the thugs in those smaller islands.

Feb. 13, 2012 at 6:55pmIf he’s been more of a bliever in the 2nd Amendment, and if it were possible to exercise it in that location, and if his assailants had been more bloodthirsty, he might have gotten a sense of what the founding fathers had in mind when they put that amendment and other provisions into our Constitution that encourage self-reliance, and exercising not only one’s rights, but also one’s responsibilities. That’t the primary problem of the folks who support the progressives: they’re big on demanding their rights, but small on acknowldging either where those rights come from, or that to have true justice that will protect those rights, we have to do our duty and live up to our responsibilities. The founders believed that the best outline of how to do that was to be found in the Holy Bible. You know, like, “Thou shalt not steal”? Like it or not, there is good, and there is evil. All the talking in the world will never change one into the other. It’s so sad that the people let the Democrats to continue to try, with their support of abortion, sex outside of marriage, the destruction of the traditional family, their support of socialist policies, and their attempt to make secular humanism the defacto national religion of the U.S.A. The Constitution has long preserved us, but Prohibition proved that laws matter not when it’s in the character of the people to disobey them. Now we’re finding out what it’s like to have leaders that want to disobey them
