A remote-controlled aircraft owned and operated by an animal rights group called SHARK, was reportedly shot down near Broxton Bridge Plantation, South Carolina, on Sunday.

Steve Hindi, president of SHARK (SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness), said his group was preparing to launch its Mikrokopter drone to video what he called a live pigeon shoot on Sunday when law enforcement officers and an attorney claiming to represent the privately-owned plantation near Ehrhardt tried to stop the aircraft from flying.
“It didn’t work; what SHARK was doing was perfectly legal,” Hindi said in a news release. “Once they knew nothing was going to stop us, the shooting stopped and the cars lined up to leave.”
Hindi said the animal rights group decided to send the drone up anyway but that seconds after it hit the air “numerous shots rang out.”
“As an act of revenge for us shutting down the pigeon slaughter, they had shot down our copter.”
He claimed the shooters were “in tree cover” and “fled the scene on small motorized vehicles.”

“It is important to note how dangerous this was, as they were shooting toward and into a well-travelled highway,” Hindi stated. He added that someone from SHARK called the Colleton County Sheriff’s Department to report of the incident.
TandD adds:
According to the report, Hindi told the responding deputy the group’s remote-controlled aircraft “was hovering over U.S. 601 when he heard a shot come from the wood line. The shot sounded to him that it was of small caliber.”
The incident report went on to state that “once shot, the helicopter lost lift and crash landed on the roadway of U.S. 601.”
The deputy noted in the report that he was unable to speak to anyone at Broxton Bridge Plantation following the incident.
Hindi estimated damage to the drone at around $200 to $300. …Hindi said he will seek charges against those who shot down the drone.
“This was SHARK’s first encounter with the Broxton Bridge Plantation, but it will certainly not be the last,” Hindi said. “We are already making plans for a considerably upscaled action in 2013.”

Feb. 17, 2012 at 8:53pmWhen I was a teenager we would shoot pigeons from under a bridge over the Mississsippi.There were tow bridges about 1/4 mile apart,some of us would stand under each bridge.When we would shoot they would fly to the other bridge.Pigeons are so dumb they would do this till we ran out of shells.
Of course you cant do it any longer,some dumb as actually thinks you could shoot through 12″ of concrete with a shotgun.
Does anyone need a shooter for some of these drones?I had sniper training in the Army.
If you have some stinking birds of somekind,I have a shotgun too I will shoot them for free,and we can burn their disease carrying hide.

Feb. 17, 2012 at 9:38pmTo all of you worried about this little buzzard being shot down, I have to ask if you’ve ever shot a shotgun… The little helicopter was most likely shot down with number 7 or 8 target loads and the range of such small shot is not very far at all. In fact, I’ve seen them put a target shoot at an outdoor show about 200 yards from the main road to the arena where it was being held. The worst that that pellet would do at distance is scratch your eye.
This is not the first drone that “SHARK” has used and had shot down while flying over others’ property. Personally, if I see ANYTHING hovering over my yard that isn’t being flown by a child, I’m shooting the 5h!t out of it. And then I’m gonna keep it as a trophy.

I don’t really know,the rifle I had in Vietnam was an XM21 which was a precision made M14.I could easily hit a silhouette at 600 meters.I have hit with it as far as 1000 meters.Thats not an estimate,that was on a range.We had a starlight scope for it too,It was really big and bulky,but it was really cool at night to use tracer rounds and strike metal.
By the way the round was 7.62,packed a punch.

Feb. 17, 2012 at 10:03pmThere was a time when a R/C Club used to get up on Sundays at the crack of dawn and fly noisy Radio Controlled Airplanes right over my house where I was trying to sleep in. Being a peaceful person who had asked the R/C/ Club to just fly the Airplanes in the other direction at least until I was awake I handled the problem just like a peaceful person would. I went to a Hobby Store and bought the most powerful R/C controller with a handful of the frequency chips that you could swap out in seconds. Each time a Radio Controlled Aircraft buzzed directly over my house I got the controller. With the swiftness of a sniper, I simply used the R/C controller by swapping out the chips until got the frequency of the buzzing airplane, took control and flew it out of site over the woods never to be found again. It only took three aircraft losses to be able to sleep in on Sundays. All peaceful. All legal. Anyone listening??

I thought the same thing. Shooters should be mindful of what could have happened. If it had fallen on a car and killed someone, then what is a very heartening and enjoyable story would have been a tragedy, instead. Clearly, a shooter who brought it down and caused death or destruction would be liable (criminally and civily). But what would happen next year if things played out just as they did this year (a drone copter brought down over the highway, but the shooters are not known) — but an injury happened? Then SHARK would be liable — either under negligence (they knew what could happen) or under stict liability — and the other party to the injury could not be identified.

First off, no it wasn’t hovering over the highway. That’s just the story they’re trying to spin to make the people they’re harassing out to be dangerous lunatics. Secondly it wasn’t even shot. The idiot trying to fly it just lost control of it and crashed it into the highway. They made up the story about it being shot at to try to avoid charges for endangering motorists themselves.
Lastly taking extraordinary efforts to be able to spy on someone on their property is indeed trespassing. It’s not trespassing if you can just see something while glancing around while legally walking past their property. It is trespassing to use specalized equipment or extraordinary means to see onto their property or into their house when it’s not otherwise possible.

I’m a hunter not a sniper. My longest shot on the range was 700 yards. I was younger then; and no one was in danger of shooting at me. But you guys can do things I could never dream of.
There are three way to deal with the drones: 1. Shoot it, 2. Camouflage everything, and 3. Jam the frequency.
Number one is the most fun and the most frustrating for the peepers, so that’s my favorite.

Every year people living in this area of town try to get the race track shut down because of noise. Most of the time when these people are interviewed on TV they are in their 20’s or 30’s. The race track has been in that location longer than these people have been alive. If you are dumb enough to buy a house near a race track don’t complain about the noise. As for the drone it would be more fun to shoot one down than to shoot clay targets (which I live to do).

Without the off screen narration telling you what they want you to beleive is happening you have absolutely NO WAY OF ACTUALLY KNOWING WHAT IS HAPPENING. If I, or anyone I know that knows how to use a firearm were shooting at this thing, it wouldn’t have fallen straight back to earth with all blades still whizzing. It would have come down in many pieces scattered across the woods adjacent to the highway. I think Mr. SHARK just needs more lessons on how to fly this noisy peace busting POS and definately some lessons on how to operate a video camera. A good videographer keeps his subject in focus and in the center of the frame. Doesn’t “Suicide” mean to kill oneself? The drone was appropriately named. Good thing Mr. SHARK wasn’t the one with the gun.

If you know your neighbor is doing something you don’t like, (whether or not it is legal or not), just fly one of these drones over their heads and record them. The government, our government, is now planning to fly these aerial surveillance vehicles over farm land so they can tell farmers what to grow. I think that this is just a test letting these idiots see what would happen and if the general public would put up with it or not. I hope they got their answer.

As far as this story goes, guys in the trees with buckshot taking down thier “drone” I don’t have a problem with. They knew where they were flying it from and that likely the shooters would not risk shooting “towards” a busy highway which the group cried. It would have been funnier though to crash another radio controlled plane into it in mid air.I guess being an enthusiast for R/C stuff labels me, too, though. Did they ask these birds if they wanted to be filmed? Their rights to die privately and expect reasonable privacy on private land were denied using their argument. These vegan nutjobs do not even remember that their own beloved Darwin postulated that man did not gain intelligence until he BEGAN eating meat.

Though the unusual measures they took to trespass that someone else mentioned is valid to date. It also gives precedent, or at least the argument for, the government to use their drones and spy on pretty much anything they want which likely they are doing in many areas already. It also warms up the public so they are not so shocked and outraged, as “Private groups are doing it already”. Stories like these are a slippery slope even for the nut jobs that owned it; he better be careful for what he wishes for in terms of his little drone getting blown out of the sky. He just may get it. Great shot fellas; too bad they didn’t have another 99 of those to run past. Would have been nice to shot a perfect 100:)

Don’t bet on it, Flapjack. 400 feet is 125 yards. Simple enoough to do with a .22 even for someone who isn’t a redneck. Especially something as large as that drone appears to be. All it takes is practice, which obviously these guys were doing.
To see more people who’re actually hitting small targets at 400 yards with .22s, just go to Sniper’s Hide and check out what some of them are doing at 500 yards.
Now you can go back to your pancakes- be sure to use real maple syrup on them.

Another lie by a leftist to infringe on private property rights). Let me ask you this, does that drone present the same hazard as “shooting” over the “busy” highway? Also, I would like to see the flightplan registration for that drone flight (I suspect it does not exist). Is that drone licensed with the FAA? (I doubt it). It’s time for us to get dirty and use their tactics.

Steel buckshot going through Lipoly Batteries such as those on the drone will cause the Batteries to go on thermal runaway almost instanteously and catch fire in a very spectacular way. The batts on this copter are huge, if the bullet or buckshot did go through the batteries, those who launched this thing over the overs will be paying for the fire control of that forest. Looked pretty darn dry in there. Oh yea! Once the batts catch fire, they cannot be put out. Exploding cigarette? Yep! Lipoly strikes once again.

I have ZERO issue with this drone being shot down(If in fact that is what happened). I would have done it as well. If you had actually read my post you would have also read the part where I said I do not fly R/C. Never have probably never will. How can you people not see the hypocrisy of the violation of privacy and trespass Yet totally miss that Dumb… purposely destroyed someones personal property because he was annoyed. You can not fly R/C’s at “the crack of down” Because you cant see them to fly them. The folks who are legally flying their R/C’s at an approved air strip are the folks following the laws regarding R/C’s which means there is a maximum distance they can fly them from ANY STRUCTURES. Noise pollution is taken account of when they adopted these reg’s. As well as local, county and state noise reg’s. If you decide to sleep during abnormal times for what ever reason, that is your problem to deal with the Normal business of that time period. If you don’t like it get a new job. It is your responsibility in life to ensure that you get the sleep you need not your neighbor. There is so much common sense being lost here. You must hold yourselves to the same standards you judge others of. If you don’t then YOU MUST DEAL WITH THE CONSEQUENCES. Are you gonna shoot at the 747 leaving the airport at 3 in the morning? What about the C-47 leaving the Airbase across town flying low running night ops?

Their secretary makes $55k/yr for 16hrs per week work (it’s listed in the IRS 990 form for 2010). So that’s $100k plus for a fulltime working person like us.

Most pigeons are considered varmints. also they knew that people were going to be shooting at these pigeons so they put a helicopter in the sky were they were shooting sound irresponsible to me. Also many states have laws about interrupting a hunt or scaring wild game away from hunters. Sounds to me like shark was acting in a malicious manner

May need to save the pigeons and go back to really old school encryption on paper. Man I really do not want this country, the only society where freedom ever existed, to be lost especially for our childrens’ sake and lose it on OUR watch. This may be another of their arguments against 2nd amendment rights also

Asking nicely doesn’t mean squat! Why do the R/C pilot’s not have any rights? It is not reasonable to be forced to sit around thinking…I wonder if he is awake yet?….Should I call him and find out? or will that wake him up? Clever? Maybe. Fair? Absolutely not. The proliferation of unmanned aircraft are going to require some new FAR’s.

First, the transmitters, or “controller” as you call it does not come in different strengths. You can not buy one more powerful than another. Second except for the latest radios they come in different channels, and you change the channels with crystals or modules, which don’t come cheap. For you to “Take Control” you would have had to buy dozens of crystals. Also when two transmitters are turned on the same channel as a flying airplane, the airplane simply loses control, and Neither Transmitter is able to “Take control” and fly it away. Notwithstanding that you didn’t “take control” of anything, for you to have been able to even interfere with that many airplanes you would have had to spend hundreds of dollars.
Also the latest radios use 2.4 Gig which does not have set channels or frequencies. They are paired with the airplane receiver and change frequencies hundreds of times per second. You could turn on a dozen of the “strongest” transmitters made and it would have no effect at all on someone elses airplane.
Finally, If they were a legitimate RC club they would have had a sanctioned field with rules on times they could fly, and places they could or couldn’t fly.

Can government or private aircraft take photos,video and audio of my private property or my actions on private propety? Can I disable them with guns,rocks,arrows or with my own aircraft? Can they fly into our barns,garages or bedroom windows?
I’m serious – this needs to be clarified and I don’t think we are going to like the answer.

If you know anything about SHARK, you know that they have a history of being attention seeking screwballs. They claim to be animal rights people because their is big money in the donations. This “drone” was not a freebie, they spent good money to harass these hunters. By the way, hunting is a perfectly legal activity in this country. These folks were doing nothing wrong. Personally, I would have gone ahead and shot a few pigeons and then requested a copy of the video for posterity.
SHARK was only after a publicity stunt that could spur donations from eco-terrorist types.

YOU DO NOT OWN THE AIR ABOVE YOUR PROPERTY! If you did, you could obviously charge airline companies a fee for flying over your property. I’m not saying anything about spying here though; that is a different situation altogether. It’s just like you don’t own the ground under your property either. If you do then where exactly does it end? Does it form a conical shape to the center of the earth–that would be obsurd. I can dig or drill underneath your property all I want, I just can’t cause damage to your property above or anything to collapse.
What have I learned from this? That we all need to become better educated on property rights as well as our own Constitution. Why do I say this? The kill zone on this particular target would probably be through the lens of its $300.00+ video camera. Even if the craft managed to limp back to its noisy, whiney liberal/progressive fecal-brained owners, its value to their organized interference in people’s right to pursue happiness will have been effectively compromised.

I am glad that they shot down the drone, now if we could just do the same to the 30000 that congress just approved to fly over our homes, schools, farms, etc.

A 244 H&H magnum is a small caliber but sounds like an atomic bomb going off… because its 100 grains at 3300fps! Idiots. Hopefully a case like this will end up in a (logical) court and they will find that hovering a camera over a property is invasion of rights. For example, if is it NOT an invasion of rights, how high off the ground must a camera be? If it’s ‘just off the ground’ then a foot off the ground could theoretically be legal…morons…

In reality, airspace more than 150 meters from people or structures is uncontrolled and owned by the US government.

When the intent is to view private events on private property, no elevation is too high. Courts have already ruled that you cannot use Google maps, say, to ‘inspect’ the property of a person which you cannot see from a public space.
By your very faulty logic, my 400mm lens is a perfectly legal means to make sure that my neighbors do not abuse their kids, do drugs, beat their dogs, eat too much sugar, commit any mortal sin or cast aspersions on their neighbors via private conversation.
I have a right to privacy…that’s a 360 degree right…. get it?

I have heard of cases, however, where it was ruled that things clearly visible from the air can’t expect privacy. Would it be wrong for them take a camera up with them in a hot air balloon? Should it be illegal to take pictures from a helicopter or airplane?
