Obama: My Apology for Koran Burning ‘Calmed Things Down’

President Obama is sticking by his decision to apologize to Afghan President Hamid Karzai for the burning of Korans by U.S. troops last week and maintained in an interview Wednesday that doing so “calmed things down.” The burning incident sparked a wave of violence across the country.

“We’re not out of the woods yet,” Obama said in an interview with ABC News‘ Bob Woodruff at the White House. “But my criteria in any decision I make, getting recommendations from folks who are actually on the ground, is what is going to best protect our folks and make sure that they can accomplish their mission.”

ABC provides some of the background:

The president’s comments came just hours before a formal White House dinner to honor Iraq War veterans, some of whom have also served in Afghanistan and may be redeploying there to assist ongoing U.S. military operations. Woodruff was the only journalist invited to attend the dinner.

Obama said his letter to Karzai aimed to curb further danger to U.S. troops on the ground. It reportedly expressed regret for the apparently inadvertent burning of the Korans, the sacred text of Islam, on a U.S. military base in Afghanistan.

Still, the president’s critics and some members of the military have questioned the appropriateness of the move, given the subsequent murder of two U.S. military officers at the hands of an Afghan inside one of the capital’s secure ministry buildings.

“Everything else — the politics or second guessing of these various decisions — I’m not worried about,” Obama said.

  I think “delusional” is a bit strong, but first; how did the Taliban respond to Mr Obama’s “grovelling apology to the mob” as Charle Krauthammer succinctly put it?
  
  This is the statement by Zabiullah Mujahid, who is one of the self proclaimed spokesmen for the Taliban:
  
  “We should not be satisfied with mere protests and empty slogans but the military bases of the invaders, their military convoys and their troops should become a target of our courageous attacks. Kill them, beat them, take them as prisoners and teach them such a lesson that they never summon the courage to abuse the Holy Quran again.”
  
  When you consider that thousands of old Korans have been dumped in a sewerage ditch by muslims in Pakistan (where most Taliban leaders are believed to be hiding), the truth of the matter becomes obvious.
  
  The more apologies made, the more they will be used to persuade the population that the grievence is real and legitimise violent retaliation by a vicious, barbaric enemy.
  
  While I wouldn’t characterise him as delusional, once again Mr Obama has demonstrated that he is a blundering amateur.

  Unfortunately, “forgive & forget” is a western mantra, stemming from it’s Judeo-Christian roots.
  
  There are deep cultural boundaries that this President and the people on the far left overlook.
  
  The Eastern cultures see apologies as signs of weakness, the west sees them as signs of strength.
  
  If President Obama is smart enough to say that we should not impose our standards on others, then why can’t he see that the same differences are in play when we deal with them?

  Second point to ponder is why did we get caught? How come the most elite force in the world does such a shabby job of this? Aljazeera actually has a picture of one of the Qurans about 20% burnt. What kind of incinerator was used? I can’t imagine that the military that raided Bin Laden’s home, caught him, killed him, ransacked his house and made away with all they wanted to take away, held a burial service for him according to Islamic injunctions, buried him at sea and then returned home and had dinner with their families while we watched Super bowl or something, can botch such a sensitive assignment. Much as I love and respect the men in uniform, something needs to be said as to why such a sloppy job was done. How did anybody even know that we were burning anything?

The korans and materials burned were taken from a detention center where prisoners were writing coded messages in their “sacred” koran. They were passing extremist messages to each other via their “sacred” book of lies!
