Did Obama Camp Flat-Out Lie About the Contraception Mandate by Posting This ‘Permission Slip?’

Everyone is familiar with the details of the Department of Health and Human Services contraceptive mandate, right?

The Obama administration mandated that all employers – including religious institutions – cover the cost of contraception and abortion-inducing drugs in their employees’ health-care plan. This sparked off a war with the Catholic Church, which said it would not and could not comply with the mandate. And, via the “Blunt Amendment,” members of Congress tried to pass a bill that would allow employers to opt out of the mandate.

That bill was killed Thursday in the Senate.

Obviously, this is a contentious and touchy political issue, right? It would seem like the sort of thing an incumbent president running for re-election would avoid, right?

Apparently, not.

It doesn’t look like the Obama administration has any intention of walking away from the firestorm it has created with the HHS mandate. In fact, it would seem that the president plans on using this issue as a campaign tool.

Earlier today, the Obama campaign thought it would be a good idea/funny to post the following “permission slip” on its Tumblr account:

The “permission slip” reads:

I have discussed the employee’s contraceptive options with her, and I verify that her use of these methods (IS / IS NOT) in agreement with my personal beliefs. The employee (DOES / DOES NOT) have my permission to access birth control pills, intrauterine devices, or any other type of contraception.

And included with the image was the following caption: “If Mitt Romney and a few Republican senators get their way, employers could be making women’s health care decisions for them.”

Now, as Michael Brendan Dougherty of Business Insider points out, the whole thing is dripping, sopping wet with factual inaccuracies (i.e. lies).

Dougherty catalogs all of the errors:

Lie #1 The idea employers have creepy discussions with individual employees about their sex lives when discussing their health insurance compensation. This does not happen. New hires usually get a packet with their insurance information just like everywhere else.

Lie #2 That employers currently (or under any law) would be granting or revoking permission to even use birth control. This is just not true. Currently many schools and hospitals just refuse to pay for it because they believe it directly implicates them in a sinful act. But employees are absolutely free to follow their own conscience and do what they want with their wages.

Lie #3 That there will be more ongoing creepy discussions and that a person’s health insurance will be constantly changed and reviewed according to changeable moral standards. This is not the experience of anyone working at a religious hospital or school, nor would it be.

Lie #4 That these decisions even get this personal. These institutions typically write up an agreement with a health insurer–or they self-insure. It’s an impersonal contract, not an inquisition.

Lie #5 Implicitly this makes it seem like it is also about women and their most common birth-control choices. It doesn’t mention sterilization or “morning-after” drugs that are part of the mandate. And it doesn’t mention most health-policies that don’t cover birth control also don’t cover elective-vasectomies for men.

When you think about it, it’s really quite impressive that they were able to fit that many “untruths” into three sentences.

“The big lie behind all this is that somehow allowing some employers not to pay for this kind of coverage amounts to a ‘contraception ban,” Dougherty writes.

Echoing these sentiments, Tim Carney of the Washington Examiner writes: “It’s hard to recall a political cause as dependent on dishonesty as the support for Kathleen Sebelius’s ObamaCare contraception mandate. Mandate proponents attack opponents for wanting to ban contraception, or at least for ‘politicizing’ contraception.”

The propagandists under Stalin, Mao and Hitler would have been astounded by the lengths this administration will go to twisting the truth into their convenient talking points. The amazing part is that they have told us they will rewrite our history and introduce new truths to our faces and we just let them tell us whatever they want and we don’t take them to task to validate their positions. 1984 wasn’t a fiction novel it was a prediction and it’s coming true.

  This is really disappointing. I hope that someday in the future we will have adults in the White House but sadly I think those days are behind us. We are living in a new era where the only sacred things are Political Correctness, the Environment and Gay rights. This might have given the Obama admin a chuckle but God has a way of humbling us in time. I pray for our country and our leaders, sooner or later God’s patience is going to run out.   Barry is a divider not a uniter contraception was not even a issue until he made it a issue and most people were fine with the way it was local health departments helped out if you could not afford contraception no one out protesting for contraception rights until the divider brought it up.

Pretty sure the permission slip was in response to the Blunt Amendment which was broad enough to allow ANY employer to deny coverage based on religious or moral objection, not just religious based organizations. So the report is a classic bait and switch. In the context of the Blunt Amendment as written the permission slip is an accurate representation of what could happen. NEXT

  @Howtruthhurts, So, you’re perfectly happy to have your employer make choices for you based on his or her religion? What if their moral choice based on theirr religion isn’t immoral or unethical under your religion? What if the employer is a Muslim? If you want to make this about religious choice, why do the prinicples of a religious institution outweigh the religious prinicples of the individual employee?

  And I still would be for the Blunt Admendment. The bill doesn’t say that the employer gets to stop you from paying for birth control. The employer gets to say that she isn’t going to pay for your birth control. If you can’t see the difference, you’re purposefully being obtuse. My employer doesn’t get to say where I take my paid vacation. They do get to say how much paid vacation they are willing to pay for. If it is to big an issue for me, I get to decide if I want to continue working for them. If you are so upset about not having your employer paying the $30/month that the pill costs, find another job. THAT is how it works in America.

  Poor Desertrose. Who says your employer makes your choices? Only YOU can allow that to happen. You want contraception? Fine, go out and get it yourself. That makes it your choice, not your employer’s. Anyone’s wish to have someone else pay for it has no place in this country. Period. An employer has EVERY right to deny that type of coverage if it’s against his/her beliefs. If you can find one that wants to cover that for you, great! More power to ya. But to think that ANY employer should be required to cover contraception is assinine at the least.

They will also face debilitating diseases, and maladies eventually. Have they prepared themselves for the day that the government will deny them further medical care and allow them to die? If he is as ‘smart’ as he claims then what other excuse is there for his complete failure. Let’s keep the spotlight on his record where it belongs. Time for him to move out of our White House and join Jimmy Carter on the side lines. Maybe he could build basketball courts and golf courses around the country for poor people?

Most people I come across are NOT voting for Obama again, but how many cheats does he have planted around the country? They are framing the argument for you here. Notice the last sentence states “…does not have my permission to access.” How is not paying for something the same thing as preventing access? Last time I checked, the institutions gave people a paycheck. If they CHOOSE to buy birth control with it, they are more than welcome to. I don’t understand why that is so hard.

  It’s not hard to understand. Insurance provided by an employer is a benefit. The government should have no authority to dictate what benefits are provided by any private company. What’s next, a manditory number of sick, personal and vacation days? Maybe, meals should be provided? Transportaion to and from work and child care?
