Did you know that along with being a “wise Latina,” Sonia Sotomayor is also disabled? Apparently, according to the White House, she is. The second-most-junior Justice on the Court has diabetes.
But did you know diabetes counted as a “disability?” If you didn’t, no worries, neither did some of Sotomayor’s defenders. See also Kevin Drum of Mother Jones:
Did I already know this? Maybe. My memory is so bad that I couldn’t tell you whether I once knew this and have forgotten, or whether I had never heard this before. In any case, I guess I’ve added two new bits of knowledge to my brain pan today: (1) Sonia Sotomayor has diabetes, and (2) diabetes is considered a disability. Live and learn.
The news of Sotomayor’s “disability” comes as the White House has released a graphic detailing their work in promoting the cause of minority empowerment, which lists the confirmation of a “disabled Justice” as a major accomplishment. You can look at the relevant portion of the graphic below (via the White House):
Sotomayor’s status as a disabled American is confirmed by the Americans with Disabilities Act, which includes protections for people with diabetes.

As if having diabetes somehow sets her apart as being good for the country or even remotely contributing in a positive way to her job. It should say, “Despite her having diabetes and possibly contributing to a shorter term as a justice, we could not find anyone that was more likely to get rid of that troublesome Constitution, one decision at a time.”

The reason I can state this? Because I am working very hard to NORMALIZE MY SUGARS! I searched out and am following an eating plan developed by Dr. Richard K. Bernstein of the Hudson Valley area of NY, that is based on very low carbs, good proteins, good veggies (nothing with sugar attached to their name, such as sweet beets, sweet corn, sweet peas, etc.), good animal fats (that include ESSENTIAL fatty acids), and berries (which are low in sugar).
Dr. Bernsteins information and books and time of his once monthly internet broadcast to answer questions is available two places on the internet. He is a type I diabetic since his teenage years, was an engineer for many years, used an early blood glucose meter to discover what made his sugars go so high, tried to publish his findings, couldn’t, so he went back to school at Albert Einstein and got his medical degree (MD), and additional degrees in nutrition. He is a specialist in wound care for the hospital, and is still practicing specifically with diabetics at 75 years old!
NO DIABETIC should be “disabled”! And cholesterol doesn’t come from the meats/fat you eat, but from elevated sugars and high insulin loads.

I know this can be different for people but that is a case of personal responsibility. In this case, Obama just seeks to open the flood gates to more government dependence

However, this article is referring to the American with Disabilities Act, not SS-I or SS-D so it has nothing to do with living off of the government dole, but has to do with mainly employment discrimination. Under the ADA someone is disabled if their impairment interferes with a major life activity. I am sure neither of you would like to be fired because of your diabetes and that is what the ADA protects you against.
