‘We Must Repeal the Stand Your Ground Law’: Jesse Jackson Tips His Hand After Zimmerman Arrest
George Zimmerman hasn’t even been in jail for a single day and hasn’t been found guilty of anything yet (in fact, his trial hasn’t even started), yet Jesse Jackson is already trying to use Zimmerman’s shooting of Florida teen Trayvon Martin to push a fondly cherished wish of left-of-center Floridians. That is, he’s trying to use the case as a pretext to repeal the “Stand Your Ground” law, which some observers have blamed for Martin’s death at Zimmerman’s hands.
Laura Flanders of the Nation has video and the full quote in a short blog post:
George Zimmerman was behind bars Wednesday night, forty-five days and countless rallies after he went free after shooting unarmed high school junior Trayvon Martin in a Sanford, Florida, gated community. Zimmerman now faces the possibility of life in prison, but the Reverend Jesse Jackson, who has led some of those rallies, says that the mobilizing shouldn’t end.
“When Rosa Parks was arrested [for refusing to go to the back of the bus], if we had focused on the bus driver and not on the states’ rights law, we would have missed the point…. We must not just settle for Zimmerman, we must repeal the Stand Your Ground law.”
As luck would have it, Reverend Jackson and I were both at Ohio University as the news from Florida came in. Here’s what he had to say.
The internal logic of Jackson’s statement, comparing the case of the Montgomery Bus Boycott to the case of Trayvon Martin, might not be fully consistent with either. The bus boycott was enacted in order to protest a specifically racist policy, whereas the Stand Your Ground law applies with equal force to whites and blacks, and has no alleged racial motivation behind it. Moreover, Rosa Parks did not die as a result of the bus policy, nor were the bus company employees ever charged with a crime. Either way, it’s not clear that the shooting of Trayvon Martin is indicative in any way of a wider trend of racially motivated violence. In fact, it appears to be an isolated incident, which would make it just the opposite.
Is Reverend Jackson distracting from his own cause?

Posted on April 12, 2012 at 7:12pmHey Jackson, I wonder if some of your home boys in Chicago would like to have a “stand your ground” law. Seems to me that there is a gang war going on there and your brothers are being killed left and right. I guess that makes no difference to you though since you can’t make any political gains by demonstrating against other blacks, does it?
Phoney.

Posted on April 12, 2012 at 7:03pmThese people are trying to reverse everything in the Bible and obliterate it to line their own pockets. These people are not who the black race thinks they are. These are evil men who are not only trying to take America from Under God, but are thinking they are going to wipe Christianity and the Truth from the face of the earth. They are liars and deceivers and should not be allowed to divide the races of people to where some may not be saved. Jesus Christ came as a servant to the people, and being a servant should be an honor. Whatever one does should be done right and with zeal. None of us are better than the other, but some people are not fit to lead, and Jesse Jackson and the muslim criminals who were filling the jails are not who God wants to lead this nation.

Posted on April 12, 2012 at 6:59pmIn Genesis Chapter 9 of the Holy Bible it clearly tells about Noah getting drunk and lying naked on his bed when one son mocked him and was cursed. His generations were cursed to be slaves and the land of Canaan was cursed. The other two sons covered him, as they should have. I do not know if this is the black race or not, but I do know those muslim blacks do not want you to read the Holy Bible.
I do know Jesse Jackson is a phoney and a liar. He is misleading the black race to hell in order to line his own pockets. Anyone to listens or pays attention to this man is anti-Christ.

Posted on April 12, 2012 at 6:59pmThey don’t want anyone to be able to protect themselves. How else will they have total control. Everything thye are doing is to take away our freedom including the debt talks, stock scares, security scares, health scares, religious scares, hunger and water scares, ect.Thats what EU has done to their people, and then try to make it like their just out of control. Thye don’t want to be owned (slaves ot their government) It is a ploy they think the public will willingly go along with what they want. And the ones who don’t the public will turn in. We can’t let them get by with it.

Posted on April 12, 2012 at 7:33pmthis isn’t about repealing the stand your ground law, this is about turning the mindset of enough americans against guns so they can disarm the law abiding population. Obama and his administration when asked directly say they’re not after our guns, but if you pay attention to the regulations and laws they are trying to pass on ammunition, guns, gun ownership, hunting rights, etc. they are going after our guns. if they succeed, then how does one defend themselves? the people need to stand up for this law. it is the right of every american citizen to defend themselves! And I have a bad feeling that win or lose in November, it’s going to get ugly. repeal that law, and anyone defending themselves against a rioter, or an extremist cna then be thrown into jail because they are no longer protected by their right to defend themselves. don’t be so quick to let the gov’t pressure lawmakers to repeal laws that protect our rights, wheather you’re in florida or thousands of miles away in Alaska, we need to stand together.

Posted on April 12, 2012 at 6:47pmStand your ground is a basic right to defend yourself no matter where you’re at. If I have a legal right to be somewhere and am attack I have the right to defend myself and my family. I have a concealed carry permit and carry anythime I leave home, not because I’m looking for trouble, but just in case. I’m a 56 year old with a bad ticker, married to a women who has already had to have one hip replaced, I’ll retreat when she is out of danger, until then I’ll stand my ground!

Posted on April 12, 2012 at 6:42pmI’ve always said that this is the REAL target of the liberals – the stand your ground and the castle laws. Liberals are criminals, generally, and people who are armed and can protect themselves are a danger to these liberal thugs. Jackson wishes that the dope-dealing, graffiti tagging, jewelry thief could have gotten away with robbing Zimmerman’s neighborhood until every last piece of jewelry was gone. He considers it a form of reparations.
No one can explain why Martin’s family refused, for 3 full days, to claim his body. I know why – they were trying to get rid of all the stolen merchandise from their home before police came looking around and asking questions – they were in on cute little 12 year old Trayvon’s criminal activity. It was a family cartel of criminals.

Posted on April 12, 2012 at 7:02pmI think that the way the Democrats have handled this proves your point. The Democrats have shown contempt for the rule of law in Florida and have basically unleashed a vigilante mood in their already angry base. Very disturbing behavior on their part – especially after the almost gangster tone Obama had toward the SCOTUS last week. Bullying is not a behavior valued by the average American. Gang members and gangsters maybe….

Posted on April 12, 2012 at 6:42pmHey, what do the Democrats care about what voters want ? What do Democrats care about election results ? Zippo. Look what they did in Wisconsin . Look what they did in Arizona. Look what they have done in Texas. For the Democrats it’s all about what the UNIONS want. It’s all about what illegals want. It’s all about what Big Brother wants. It’s all about the International Left Agenda. It’s all about WINNING. An election that is….
