Clothing giant Urban Outfitters, fresh from their previous outing with controversy after stocking supplies from the communist-sympathizing Obey Clothing, has gotten on the wrong side of consumers again, this time with an ad in their April clothing catalogue depicting two women kissing. What the image is supposed to be advertising is not clear from looking at it:
In response, the group One Million Moms, which advertises itself as opposed to the exploitation of children in the media, has taken to its website to denounce the picture and call on parents to throw out any Urban Outfitters catalogues they receive.
“Trash Your Teen’s New Urban Outfitters Catalogue,” the headline on One Million Mom’s website shrieks. “The ad and catalog are clearly geared toward teenagers. Tell them you will also no longer shop at their stores if you hear this type of advertising continues. The content is offensive and inappropriate for a teen who is the company’s target customer.”
One Million Moms has previously been involved in a controversy surrounding JC Penney, which they attacked for allowing famed lesbian daytime talk show host Ellen Degeneres to be a spokeswoman. Degeneres reacted on her own show at the time with sarcastic outrage:
“This organization doesn’t think that I should be the spokesperson because I’m gay,” Degeneres said. “I am happy to say that JC Penney stuck by their decision to make me their spokesperson.”
One Million Moms has a long history of pushing these sorts of boycotts, some of which have been successful, especially as pertaining to the controversial television show “GCB.” Their mission is frankly religious – in fact, their Facebook page all but explicitly advertises them as a Christian group. For instance, one status reads “The separation of church and state is called the rapture.”
