NBA Basketball Player Named ‘World Peace’ Ejected for This Vicious Elbow to Opponent’s Head
When your name is legally Metta World Peace, it’s probably a good idea to stay away from anything that can be perceived as violent. But someone didn’t tell that to the NBA basketball player formally known as Ron Artest.
On Sunday, the Los Angeles Lakers’ World Peace (aka Artest) was ejected for a vicious elbow he threw at his opponent, Oklahoma City’s James Harden:
Of course World Peace tried to argue against the ejection, but to no avail. Deadspin explains, quite hilariously:
World Peace was thrown out on the spot, despite fervent arguments that the elbow was inadvertent; we can’t quite see how any celebration that isn’t the Chicken Dance would feature elbows that high, but whatever—it’s [NBA Commisioner] David Stern’s issue to deal with, now.
SportsGrid isn’t convinced either:
Whether or not World Peace meant to do this to Harden is debatable. At first, he didn’t look like he was going for the knockout, but then again you probably shouldn’t be throwing elbows like this no matter what the situation. Regardless of whether you’re playing basketball or driving in your car or getting married, this type of arm movement is not warranted.
It seems the question isn’t if World Peace will be suspended, but for how long (especially considering his infamous history).
File that under ironic sentences.

Posted on April 23, 2012 at 12:09pmmake the court half again larger, make the basket 5 foot higher, put them on roller blades and no penalties and I’d pay good money to see that.

Posted on April 23, 2012 at 12:31pmThat would be awesome, I’d much rather watch that than the NBA…Do you remember when they tried to make a trampoline basketball (I think it was called Jam-Ball), that looked like a ton of fun

Posted on April 23, 2012 at 12:07pmThis is simply Ron Artest being Ron Artest and no amount of artsy fartsy name changing b.s. “turd polish” is going to erase the fact that he is a loathsome human being…is this not the same Ron Artest that was ejected for FIGHTING FANS in the stands? Sounds like the street and the boy are inseperable as the saying goes……

Posted on April 23, 2012 at 1:54pmagreed. ron artest is a prime example of while i quit watching the NBA around in the late 90s early 2000s. i dont know if the elbow was intentional, at least hitting in the head, but to me it clearly looks like he intended to hit harden. they were wrapped up and he threw that elbow back, i think to get harden off of him and give him a jab but not tnecessarily knock him out with a headshot.
for a league pimping the character counts motto you think guys like artest would get banned from the league with this type of behavior. It really takes away from what many other players do for their communities by giving a basketball players a bad name.

To bad you can’t live up to your made up name. I hope they suspend him for the rest of the season and fine him $200,000 dollars.

Posted on April 23, 2012 at 11:48amIt’s time to “affirmative action” the NBA. The percentage of players of a certain race should be equal to the number of fans allowed to attend or spend money on merchandise. The currency of the NBA, physical ability should be regulated. It is unfair that certain people are given an advantage because of the happenstance of birth. After all isn’t that done at medical school, where a whole heck of a lot more is at steak than entertainment?

I saw this on TV and questioned the acuastion, but after seeing that he was in contact with the other player before he hit him in the face with his elbow it is obvious that he needs altering to lower his testosterone levels.

Posted on April 23, 2012 at 11:28amThe NBA can stop this abuse in a minute if they would press criminal charges of assault, fine the player at least a million and the team about 5 million for allowing him to play …. take out a few of these jerks like that and it would return to a decent sport to watch again …. It is the teams fault for allowing them to play in the first place …

Posted on April 23, 2012 at 12:06pmThe NBA couldn’t actually do that. The assaulted player would have to file the charges, and none of them want to do that because they don’t want to be the guy that’s seen as soft and weak.
The NBA could stop it in an instant however, as could the NHL and NFL which have both become complete jokes. You simply have a two strikes rule. You get the benefit of the doubt ONE time. The first time it happens you’re suspended for a year without pay. The second time it happens your NBA/NHL/NFL career is over.
Also when one of these goons goes after a player on another team, the team that was attacked should get to pick the player that gets suspended along with the goon. That will deter teams from employing no talent clowns that are only there to attempt to injure players on opposing teams. Right now they don’t care if their scrub gets suspended, especially if they manage to knock one of your star players out. If they’re risking a significant suspension to somebody that actually matters to their team, then it isn’t going to happen.

Posted on April 23, 2012 at 11:24amIf I was the one who had to deal with this incident, this man would never be allowed on a basketball court ever again, not to mention that OKC should charge him with assult. In all these incidents of players acting badly, they would be banned from sport forever…That would end this unsportsmanship behavior, and crimminal charges, not to mention fines as they exit they’re careers.
