TV weather forecasters are often the most colorful or unpredictable members of a news team. Characters like Willard Scott, Al Roker, or CNN’s sometimes-testy Chad Meyers come to mind.
Thanks to an unexpected wildlife encounter, Kurt Aaron of WNEP in Scranton-Wilks-Barre, PA is the TV weatherman in the spotlight today.
Literally seconds before Aaron was supposed to deliver the 11pm weather report from the patio just outside the station’s studio, he came face-to-face with a family of black bears. Momma bear and her three cubs were wandering around the back of the building, probably looking for a little late night snack. As he tells it, Kurt ran like he “stole something” back into the building.
The seven-day forecast was eventually delivered, along with a little wildlife report. Enjoy the clip.

Apr. 24, 2012 at 12:58pmNever run from a bear. You will trigger a prey response and they are much faster than you. They can also climb trees really well. Just don’t make any sudden movements if they come at you stand your ground and make loud noises. I have heard stories of boy scouts banging metal pans together and bears run away. They don’t understand what is happening so they leave.

Apr. 24, 2012 at 1:45pmBlack bears eat a lot of vegitation but they are not total herbivores. They do eat meat, and they do kill.
Besides being an herbivore is irrelevant to being dangerous. Elephants and hippos are real herbivores, their entire physiology is geared to eating vegitation. I wouldn’t recommend walking up and trying to pet one in the wild though. And if there was a calf near, good luck getting out of there alive. Not to mention that there are rare cases of both these species feeding on meat. And they are actual herbivores; not carnivores that simply choose to eat a higher ratio of vegitation than most carnivores.

They do not however actually hunt for meat, but will eat meat if they come across carrion (dead animal).

Apr. 24, 2012 at 7:34amSo funny! When I lived in Mt. Airy, MD a Canadian goose chased my two cats all the way into my house through their cat door. That goose was vicious. It spit and hissed at me, and decided to sit on my white Italian leather sofa. I had to call my neighborhood teenage boy to help me get it out of my house. Together, with a broom, we finally got it out of the house. Next, I had to find my very upset cats. I found both of them a couple of backyards over. The goose spent the rest of the day on the cover of my inground pool and was gone by the next morning.

The food post reminds me, in the 50′s when we had a dime/10 pennies..you could get 2 cinnamon bears for a penny.Looks like Momma bear has a tag in her left-ear. Wasn’t there a news item that Canada will discontinue making pennies?

Apr. 24, 2012 at 6:03amI lived in Pittburgh when I was a child and remember raccoons, phesants, flying squirls, and all sorts of wild life close to town. We were told there were bears and they would occationally get into peoples garbage. (this was in the 60′s) P.A. has a lot of wild life and western P.A. especially.
