During a game between the New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers Wednesday, one young fan almost had his world shattered when he failed to catch a foul ball tossed into the bleachers by the Rangers’ Mitch Moreland.
Instead, the ball was snagged by a couple who were quite pleased with their catch. So pleased, in fact, that they failed to notice the weeping, heartbroken kid right next to them.
As you can see, the entire episode was caught on camera.
Yankees play-by-play announcer Michael Kay was not happy with the victorious couple’s behavior and he accused them of “rubbing it in the kid’s face.”
Luckily, the story has a happy ending.
Although the couple who caught the ball claim they didn’t notice the bawling child sitting right next to them, someone in the Rangers dugout did. An employee came out and threw the upset fan a new ball.

After the game was broadcast with Kay’s running commentary, the video went viral and the oblivious couple has discovered what it’s like to be a “viral villains.”
“My fiancé Shannon and I were honestly unaware of the situation of the little boy sitting next to us last night since we were so caught up in the excited and moment of being at our first Ranger’s baseball game together,” Sean Leonard, the man who caught the ball, wrote in a statement.
“I love children, I would never hurt someone,” his fiancé Shannon Moore said. “It’s very hurtful, especially when you know you wouldn’t intentionally hurt somebody or hurt their feelings. Especially when it’s a little-bitty toddler.”
Leonard and Moore want an apology from the Yankees play-by-play announcer.
“He took an event and sensationalized it, threw it out there, never checked or validated the facts,” Leonard said.
