Did the Media and Police Ignore Mob Beating of Two White Reporters?

Chalk up another entry in the recent string of racially motivated assaults. Today’s story comes from Norfolk, Virginia, where a white couple were beaten savagely by a group of (according to reports) between 30 and 100 black youths. Apparently, the beating was so brutal that the couple could only manage to scream out the intersection at which they were located – “Church and Brambleton” – as the blows rained down:

The victim’s friend, a young woman, tried to pull him back into his car. Attackers came after her, pulling her hair, punching her head and causing a bloody scratch to the surface of her eye. She called 911. A recording told her all lines were busy. She called again. Busy. On her third try, she got through and, hysterical, could scream only their location.

It happened four blocks from where they work, here at The Virginian-Pilot.

Two weeks have passed since reporters Dave Forster and Marjon Rostami – friends to me and many others at the newspaper – were attacked on a Saturday night as they drove home from a show at the Attucks Theatre. They had stopped at a red light, in a crowd of at least 100 young people walking on the sidewalk. Rostami locked her car door. Someone threw a rock at her window. Forster got out to confront the rock-thrower, and that’s when the beating began.

Neither suffered grave injuries, but both were out of work for a week. Forster’s torso ached from blows to his ribs, and he retained a thumb-sized bump on his head. Rostami fears to be alone in her home. Forster wishes he’d stayed in the car.

Notice the rub in the story? Both the victims are reporters. Specifically, reporters for PilotOnline, the website of the Virginian Pilot, where the story first broke. Except it didn’t break in a news story – it broke in an opinion piece. Indeed, the Pilot appears to have completely ignored the story, despite it involving their own reporters, and having multiple angles.

This decision seems even more bizarre when you realize that one of those angles is arguably police negligence. See also the Pilot article’s description of how both victims were treated when police arrived on the scene:

Forster and Rostami wondered if the officer who answered their call treated all crime victims the same way. When Rostami, who admits she was hysterical, tried to describe what had happened, she says the officer told her to shut up and get in the car. Both said the officer did not record any names of witnesses who stopped to help. Rostami said the officer told them the attackers were “probably juveniles anyway. What are we going to do? Find their parents and tell them?”

The officer pointed to public housing in the area and said large groups of teenagers look for trouble on the weekends. “It’s what they do,” he told Forster.

Could that be true? Could violent mobs of teens be so commonplace in Norfolk that police and victims have no recourse?

So this story involves a cop who is, at bare minimum, insensitive, a seemingly completely random yet racially motivated beating, and a pair of reporters. And it hasn’t been covered by the paper they worked for. What gives? WorldNetDaily thinks there might be a political correctness component to this:

The newspaper is coming under heavy criticism today from residents in the greater Norfolk area, known as Hampton Roads.

“It is unbelievable that the Virginian-Pilot would BURY this story for two weeks for politically correct reasons. That is sad and disgusting,” said David Englert of Norfolk. “Someone should be fired or resign over the decision not to report this attack. It is a sad enough commentary on our society and community to read about how the responding police viewed this crime, but for our only newspaper to decide that they will hide from the truth rather than report the truth is PATHETIC! Any attack by a mob of people on any innocent victim should be put under a bright spotlight for all involved to be judged and exposed as appropriate, and to make sure that the criminal justice system does its job to protect those who obey the law.”

Now, in fairness to the Pilot, it should be noted that no evidence has surfaced suggesting the story was ignored for reasons of political correctness. In fact, the paper has explicitly stated their reason for not covering the story was to avoid the appearance of giving too much coverage to their own people:

As Shelly noted in her column, we handled this situation as if it involved any two people in our community. Police, at this point, still have it officially listed as a “simple assault.” It has not been determined that this was a hate crime. It’s beyond ludicrous for folks to assume that we would not report on this to protect those who attacked our reporters.

Misguided, perhaps, but hardly criminal.

But then there is the question of why the youth in question attacked this pair of seemingly innocent people. In that regard, these two tweets, reported after the incident by the Pilot, may suffice as explanation:

“I feel for the white man who got beat up at the light,” wrote one person.

“I don’t,” wrote another, indicating laughter. “(do it for trayvon martin)”

It appears the publisher of the PilotOnline is a Maurice Jones is a well known socialist, he also claims to be instrumental in getting a Phil Hamilton a delegate sentenced to 9 years in prison.

  This is why we need the carry permit law passed for anybody who has a legal gun carry permit to carry in all 50 states. this could happen to me I go to a lot of diff states because of my job I have a legal carrry permit from my home state. I should be able to protect myself in other states.

  Working for the media, these two undoubtedly are staunch, knee-jerk PC advocates who have been mentally conditioned to the nth degree. Many are saying that a good anti-white thumping is all they need to give them an objective view of the racial situation, but I don’t think just one beating is nearly enough. PC dogma is ingrained too deeply.
  
  This one incident serves only to get their attention, until they have time to justify it as being an anomaly or the act of a gang, which the press likes to call incidents like these, pretending the perps are but a rogue element of the noble, peace-loving black community.
  
  Another two to four attacks are needed in order to put them in a frame of mind where they begin to have doubts about all the propaganda they’ve received from Hollywood, the media in general, their schools and teachers, etc.
  
  Probably the clincher for all but the most hard-core liberals would be to get one more good ass-whipping for nothing more than being white, then getting arrested afterward for attempting to defend themselves with some kind of weapon…a knife or a pipe…. and getting convicted in court, then reading about the incident the next day described as a white on black racial attack, showing baby photos of the black thugs holding teddy bears.

  Maybe the mob and the police thought these two reporters were Jewish and that is why they got beaten up. A few weeks ago in NYC there was a Krystal Knock the week of Passover that the media did not cover. Just like in the early 1930s Germany, Jews were on the wrong side.   Like I said several times before when these stories rear their ugly head for our attention. When these matters become so common place, the people will no longer be able to ignore them. They will increase as I predicted they would after Dear Leaders election. Its only human nature in that the pride of the Black community was raised merely because of the color of skin and now they see their King in trouble and since pride always turns ugly at some point, this is where we are today. White enclaves across America better begin a plan of what they will do when the mobs start marching to their neighborhoods.   We do NOT need a law stating licensed carry holders can carry in all 50 states. We need to come to grips with the 2nd amendment and realize all of us have the right to carry where ever we want. Especially in schools, public buildings and the like. More gun laws are not what we need.

  Their job is not (supposed to be) to parrot what the police report about police activity. They knew for a fact it was more than simple assault. No matter who it was, it was their job to report it. ESPECIALLY when they knew facts counter to the police version of the story.

But it is also the right of the carrier to be intelligent with it.   In the USA, race matters the least or atleast it used to. E Pluribus Unum..from many we are one.
  
  Race matters more now than ever in the USA because its been taught to matter. I grew up in all White communities and we never taught about the differences in ethnicities of our White heritage. We had Poles, Czechs, Germans, Italians, Whites from WVA, Tenn, PA all with distinctly different roots. Never once were these differences pointed out and celebrated like in todays classroom where Cinco de Mayo must be celebrated as a Latino heritage day, or the cause celeb Black History month…its begs the question what about White History Month? Whites are the only people in this country that have no distinct heritage or course of instruction. St Pattys day is not it!

The National Guard in every state should be put on alert before the flimsy Zimmerman charges are dismissed.

These savages don’t care about the thug (he was caught with 12 pieces of woman’s jewelry and a burglary tool) Martin. They intend to do what they always do: Loot everywhere, with most of the ensuing violence being incidental to their looting and Martin being their so-called “justification” when caught.

  I DO NOT agree with you! I lived through the 60′s in a large east coast city. I know what Martin Luther and other were fighting for. And I know what others were doing, and it was “getting the man”!
  
  I’ve moved LONG POST RACIAL, but many have not or are in fact being incited to not DARE CONSIDER BEING POST RACIAL. “Leaders” in the black community–Obama, and the rest of the community “aggitators” in our larger cities, our failing large city school systems, Jackson, Sharpton, the Nation of Islam, the New Black Panthers and other “smaller” aggitators, are keeping this stirred-up rather than TRULY helping those who want to move beyond “slavery to the sytem” rather than into the Freedom that is the United States of America!
  
  Repeating racially charged rhetoric as you have does nothing to move the cause ahead, it just reaffirms that many wiser Americans, black or WHITE, are still in the past and don’t want to help solve the problem.
  
  I realize that we are in a point in history when it appears that we’re making more steps back rather than forward. But I refuse to be part of the problem and will work toward the solution, with God’s willingness and help!

  I think they should bring back the draft, and give these young people something else to do besides terrorize their neighborhoods, The service can do a lot to make men out of these thugs. Teach them to take responsibility for themselves, their families, communities, and their country.

  Intersting. It’s interesting that the story wasn’t properly covered in the Pilot news paper because the family of Tennessee’s governor–Bill Haslem–owns Pilot. So I have to wonder if there isn’t a politically motivated reason for not publishing the story as it should have been.
  
  Haslem is a very moderate republican. He was the mayor of Knoxville before running for governor. He was one of 8 mayors who joined Michael Bloomberg’s counsel of mayors to restrict and eventually prohibit gun ownership in large cities. So I can see his influence in burying the story so as not to cause him political heartache

  @hillbillyinny Let me put it in a more realistic setting: A statistically significant ratio of African Americans are committing more violent felonies when compared to the same ratio of Caucasians. I can go on about the violence in African countries as well. So in your mind, what could this indicate? Would it be racist to even investigate the cause? In any case, there is no excuse for violent racial assault.
  
  What would the headlines read if a Caucasian male was attacked by a mob of African American youths and the male pulled out his legally carried firearm and killed several of them? Judging from current events it would read something like this:
  “White male guns down several black youths: Racist motive suggested!”
  
  How long will we continue to carry the collective guilt of the past slavery elephant in the room? This guilt is a two edge sword that cuts both ways, devastating our society by continuing to treat minorities as victims of past wrongs that we must eternally pay for. At the end of the day, not one of those youths will be held accountable because to investigate this incident would be an indictment of an entire violent community of thugs. We can’t have that now can we? That would be perceived as racist to even make the connection.
  
  When it comes to race, equal protection under the law could be taking a back seat to collective white guilt and fear of being branded “RACIST!”.

  This reminds me of the time when some guy who was seen as a powerful women’s rights activist had lost his job. After losing his job, lots of women came out (thinking he was no use to them anymore) and outed him for using his position of power to have power over women. When he was useful to them, they let him have his way with them.

Cops can sort it out later but expect to be dragged through mud by media for attacking a “peaceful” mob of “urban” folk with your vehicle. I would not hesitate for an instant (unless I glimpsed an infant in the crowd) to run down an individual or a group of people in my vehicle who are trying to attack me physically. In fact, I’ve done it. Mind you, I didn’t hit anyone because they all ran for their lives, but I was picking up my brother and his friend one night from a high school hockey game when 30-40 teens from the other school started chasing after my car. I drove a 72′ lemans with a 400, turbo 350, and dumped exhaust. Needless to say, once I realized what was going on and that I was being threatened, I idiots screaming for their lives in the back seat and 30 other idiots running for their lives after having threatened me with bats and fists. The smoke cloud I left was amazing and the idiot in a GMC that tried to follow me never had a chance to keep up with my 14 second car geared for highway.
  
  I’ve seen videos where people who could not reason to use a car in self defense have been pulled from their vehicles and beaten to death. I refuse to be such a victim. And if you do it right, it can make for a great story.

First, is situation awareness. You better be on alert for danger at all times. Second, get a firearm, CCW and learn how to use it. Why do you think cops have guns? It is not to protect you, it is for them to protect themselves. It is rare for a cop to interrupt a crime in progress. What a sad indictment of a nation that has struggled and prevailed in offering liberty and pursuit of happiness to it’s citizens. We may have gotten it wrong at times, but we are the only nation that has sacrificed the blood and treasure of our youth in order to preserve those ideals for all of our citizens, without prejudice. I would tell the victims to get a gun. If they had shot to defend themselves, you can be guaranteed it would have made headlines. Unfortunately, the headline would have read, “White Adult Shoots Unarmed Black Juvenile.”

  The President and Publisher of the Virginia Pilot is black. The rule of thumb passed down from Eric Holder is that anything blacks do is not punishible, because they have ancestors that were slaves so anything they do today is because it is payback for the enslavement from the whites. So it cannot be reported that a bunch of black hoodlems beat up a couple of whites. It was deserved for the payback of ancestoral enslavement.

  Why would any sane black man want to start a race riot? It doesn’t end well for anyone but why justify racists in the eyes of the masses when you are still only 10% of the country! Apart from a move of God we’ll have to see who servives when the libs crash the currency and the welfare checks and unimployment don’t go out to society’s pampered and the Sharptons of the world are saying this is a white mans plan.

I know the area. Not somewhere you want to be at night, period. I don’t know what I find more disgusting, the beating or the coverage by the reporter’s own newspaper (The Virginian Pilot). No wonder their subscriptions have plummeted. CCW anyone?

  How about the COPS response, probably just juveniles, what can ya do….They should fire that POS cop immediately. Basically if you see more than one or two blacks hanging around or chuckin rocks at your car, don’t get out with out a gun. If there are 100 or more, you should probably just run the light, unless you have lots of ammo.

  Nah, VB has a pretty decent dept, on top of things, no projects for the little libs to breed so quickly. Hampton, Norfolk, sure lots of thugs in training.   Done and done.. .357 protection, and hours of training/practice.. I am terrified that there is going to be violence.. If the current administration gets its’ way, voting stations are going to have to be defended and protected this November.. We saw the response during the last election.. The black panthers broke federal law and were ignored.. This will not stand again without action being taken.. We will not allow them power simply because they have the audacity to ignore the law.

  PRFCTLYFRANK, Hope you train a lot with speed loaders unless you are using a .357 SIG. In a mob situation with that many assailants you may very well need a high capacity semi auto. I have some older revolvers, but prefer my SIG P226 as my CCW preference. Same weapon as I carried when on a civilian police department and even used my personally owned SIG until we received our delivery of new pistols. Hopefully it would never be necessary to use that many rounds, but it is a relief to know that they are there. I keep something of a ditty bag handy that is actually called a mag bag. It has three pockets on each side that will hold up to three mags per, with a good sized zipped opening in the middle. Plenty of spare ammo there with a number of 15, 17, and two 20 round mags on hand. I’m not paranoid, just retired military and a former cop.

  Mec-Gar makes great 18 and 20 round mags for the 226; basically factory without the 60 buck sig imprint. Think they produce for sig factory too, that should say something. Haven’t had any failures and have been a range rat for a few months now…

  The police in this country are overwhelmed and pathetic. For the most part (here in Houston) they care more for their pensions and appeasing the radical Blacks, Gays(Mayor Parker) and other activist minorities than actually helping the citizens.. There are some good officers out there but this is a dangerous city thanks to a City Council made up of Lazy, Corrupt, and quite insane members, an incompetent Gay Mayor and the worst of the worst City Employees.
  
  Always be ready to fend for yourself .. always be ready to fight for your family… the cops will not be there in time and if they are they most likely will stand down..
