Viral Video: Zoo Lion Tries to Eat a Baby Wearing Zebra-Like Stripes
Do zoo animals get enough to eat? In January, the Blaze reported this viral video face-off between a lion and a 3-year-old. Lucky for the 3-year-old, there was a thick layer of Plexiglas giving her the confidence she wouldn’t be harmed by the male lion.
Now, a lioness at a zoo in Portland, Ore., also gets frustrated when she can’t get at her black-and-white stripped prey sitting on the other side of the glass. It’s not a zebra the lioness is trying to reach — it’s a baby. Mom caught it all on film.

Watch as the baby is initially unaware of what is going on behind him but at the end notices the lion with a rather calm reaction:
Here’s another angle of baby Jack enjoying himself behind the Plexiglas wall:
In the YouTube description, mom writes:
At the zoo in Portland, Oregon the usually lazy lioness, Kya, tries desperately to eat my son through the glass. Jack is coincidentally dressed like a baby zebra in his black and white striped hoodie. He is brave though and calls her “kitty kitty”. That’s my boy.
Someone in “Lion Tries to Eat Baby Part 1″ says “that’s, like, almost not cool”, and mom seems to have gotten some other negative feedback on the footage she took. She voices a bit of this frustration in the description of the second video, writing “Jack was in no danger so save yourself the carpal tunnel.”

Posted on May 3, 2012 at 11:50pmI agree, the lion will not break the Plexiglas. Years ago, I was at the Columbus zoo viewing the gorilla exhibit. It had a large Plexiglas viewing window. An adult male was standing very close to it, making fun of the apes. The large silverback gorilla was walking past the window and appeared to be ignoring the idiot on the outside of the compound. Suddenly, he wheeled and brought both fists down on the window right in front of the man’s face. The sound of the strike was very loud and the man jumped back and turned very white. I still remember the gorilla making what could only be called a belly laugh and continued on his walk. I just wish we had a video camera back then.

Posted on May 4, 2012 at 2:52pmThe real uproar should be that she shot most of the video with the camera sideways. The camera doesn’t auto-orient video like it does photos, please use a video editing program and put it upright before posting online. Otherwise we should all have just cause to sue for the crick in our necks caused by holding our heads sideways in order to not get dizzy watching a sideways video.
Now that’s getting your panties in a twist.

Posted on May 4, 2012 at 5:01pmA gorilla at the Dallas Zoo shattered the glass. They don’t know how he did it, but there are a lot of layers. Another gorilla was being tormented by some kids, he got so angry he jumped and pulled himself over the wall in his enclosure and escaped. He was shot dead by police, upon his autopsy they found all of his stomach muscles had been torn.

Posted on May 3, 2012 at 7:09pmNo worries… Everything man creates always works according to specs, right? Teaching a child casual arrogance in the face of merciless nature is always a good thing. These are really good life lessons. You know, like what national debt? I don’t see any nasty ol’ debt anywhere ‘cause the sun is shining and I have an iPad. It’s never happened before. Therefore it never will. The Titanic was such an aberration. That silly ol’ Depression thing is so ancient history. We don’t have to worry about the dollar crashing, the grid going down and all of those dependent upon electricity & drugs dying within a week then rotting and creating disease for a second wave of death then a third and a fourth and so on and such. Silly! Of course if all of those big burly truckers who are always in our way can’t get their diesel, the stores will run out of food in 3 days and people will begin starving and killing each other within a week or so. But who wants to think about that, really? Meh! But the good side is that the lions and tigers will all escape from zoos everywhere and will have plenty of dead or defenseless human beings to feast upon. Oh happy day! That will make PETA very happy! Oh how NATURAL!! And the wonderful Left will jump for joy. Well, maybe not if they are being eaten but it will be great afterwards. Maybe even this sweet, innocent little child will be a hors d’oeuvre. Or perhaps even better; his parents! That would be a mouthful, for sure! O happy day on Mr. Rogers s

Posted on May 3, 2012 at 5:40pmOh good grief. The baby was not upset even one scintilla. The baby was giggling, watching alternately her/his father & mother AND the lion occasionally. (Wow, what a mouth that cat has on it!). The baby was safe, having a good time. The lion was separated by strong plexiglass and I expect was not traumatized whatsoever at not being able to reach her prospective lunch – the baby. The lion has survived another horribly frustrating day encompassed inside its rather large playground at the zoo, then trotting off for the zoo-provided yummy meal. The baby has survived another day to look at the animals at the zoo. It’s all good. Akuna matata.

Posted on May 3, 2012 at 5:39pmI would have grabbed my baby. Mother’s instinct. It is different watching it and it is not your child, but my mother’s instincts went overboard and I got sick watching that. I could not have stood there and video taped a lion wanting to eat my baby.
Have to agree, I felt it was sick mom laughing and video taping.

Posted on May 3, 2012 at 4:23pmPutting that child next to a wild predator is absurd – it obviously provokes the wild animal and should be discouraged by zoos who are presumably there to raise awareness as they assist animal populations with proper treatment as they provide education and promote respect for these animals.
It does remind of the tiger at the San Francisco Zoo who killed 1 and injured 2 – justice in the animal kingdom or just nature taking its course…

Posted on May 3, 2012 at 5:17pm@Crusader, Get a clue and join reality. The zoo is not there to ” raise awareness as they assist animal populations with proper treatment as they provide education and promote respect for these animals.”
The zoo is there to get as many people as possible to pay money to come see exotic animals in cages. Sure, there might be some education going, but the zoo’s job is to make $ (just like any other business). And this lady putting this video online will probably boost ticket sales, so I guarantee they have no problem with it.

This is not amusing, cute, or funny.
Doesn’t this air-head Mom have an “occupy” rally to attend ?
The “occupy” Moms put their children in harm’s way also. She would fit right in.

Posted on May 3, 2012 at 5:24pmActually that’s not true. Genetics play a role in what animals (and people) do with regards to literally everything. Certain aesthetics are more pleasing to people of certain genetic backgrounds, as are types of foods. Same goes for animals. It would want to go for it without ever actually knowing what it was. My job is working with animals; I’ve been around animals since I was born. You can see animals develop the same tendencies and preferences as their parents without ever being near them. Certain types of dogs don’t require any training to do certain things. Herding dogs or livestock guards are good examples. They know what they should do from the time they’re born. They don’t know why, but they do know what.

Posted on May 3, 2012 at 3:50pmThat mom has more faith in a bit of glass than I would. People way under estimate the power of animals and over estimate the skill of engineers and contrators. What if that glass had been installed on a friday afternoon. You can’t live in fear of the world, but neither do you temp fate.

Posted on May 3, 2012 at 5:28pmSpeaking as both an Engineer and a former Contractor . . . You have no idea what you’re talking about. It’s Plexi-glass, not “glass” which is much stronger and virtually impossible to break through. Even an elephant would have a hard time breaking that stuff.
Then take into account the fact that we use so many safety factors when designing structures, I guarantee the design of that cage would hold 4 times the maximum strength of the biggest lion on record. And Friday afternoon installation would be meaningless, because any installation still has to pass an Engineer’s inspection . . . and those don’t happen on Friday afternoon.
Basically, before you go insulting groups of people that a good portion of your life and safety depends on, you may want to rethink that.

Posted on May 3, 2012 at 5:35pmMy husband made a similar (and only partly joking) observation when we visited the Sears tower and stood in the projecting windows, looking straight down 108 floors through the glass under our feet. We still did it.
I have a tendency to be a very anxious person, and a lot of things scare me–probably unnecessarily. This, however, wouldn’t be one of them. Think about your comment critically–if the glass failed, would it make a difference whether the baby (or anyone else) was sitting directly in front of it, or a few feet–or even yards–away? Based on your assessment, it’s too dangerous to go to the zoo at all, because if the glass fails, it really doesn’t matter how close you are–you’re still catfood.

Posted on May 3, 2012 at 6:52pmHow many structual failures happen everyday. Fortunately, very few end unfortunately with many deaths. And I was only making a joke based on the old adage about buying anything made on a monday morning or friday afternoon. I wouldn’t have any fear of the lion on any other day, but if I saw it doing that to my child, I’d again wouldn’t temp fate and get them out of there. Call it an unreasonable reaction, I’m guilty.
