Piven Uses Class Lecture to Lay Out Strategy to Illegally Occupy Foreclosed Homes, Default on Student Debt

CUNY Prof. Frances Fox Piven gave a recent talk laying out new, radical plans for the Occupy movement
According to her, the movement has to relocate, change tactics
Public sociologists should help students “refuse to pay their debts” and avoid consequences when they default
Academia should also assist in the reoccupation of foreclosed homes
Occupy should exert “pressure” so that the illegal occupation of homes become legal ownership by occupiers
Occupy should even figure out how to get the “utilities running” in illegally occupied buildings

The radical organizers of the Occupy movement are becoming notably desperate in their strategies for disruption. And as the movement continues to try to remain relevant, longtime Occupy cheerleader and radical CUNY professor Frances Fox Piven has offered her advice for some of Occupy’s most radical tactics. In a Skype interview with UC-Berkeley students recently, Piven seemed to offer a game plan by expanding on illegal, and possibly dangerous, actions the movement has toyed with before.

Piven began by admitting to the classroom that Occupy should look beyond camping in city parks.

“My vision of the Occupy movement is that– well, I think it should find some new spaces,” she conceded. “I think Occupy has to relocate, occupy some other spaces. Maybe it’s — it doesn’t have to be in Wall Street – it could be a university building.”

Piven proceeded to expand the idea of not paying back debt, an idea that’s been at the forefront of the movement since the beginning: “Here’s something public sociologists could do – I think we need to figure out exactly how students can protect themselves against reprisals if they refuse to pay their debts. How can they protect themselves against having their wages garnished?”

But defaulting on student debt was just the start. Piven also offered advice (by asking strategic questions) on the recent practice of occupying private residences: “How can we defend if the reoccupation of foreclosed homes grows in scale? How can we defend those houses that are occupied? How can we exert enough pressure so that the occupations become legal ownership? I think– there are real, big strategy questions.”

Piven went into detail on the subject, and the complications associated with squatting on private property”

“In the occupation of homes, we have to figure out how to provide services, how to reconnect utilities often. Or if what we’re doing is we are defending people who are occupying multi-family apartments in big cities, we have to figure out how to get the services running in those buildings. And they, if the landlords, the new predatory equity landlords, had not succeeded in forcing them out — but once that stage is reached, the tenants have to figure out alternate ways of providing services to the building — heat and hot water, things like that.”

  We all knew that was coming. What these commies want is to steal the homes of those who were even just unfortunate in this economy–to romanticize it as anything other than taking things by force that do not belong to them is insanity. And she is hoping squatters rights come into play, but she apparently does not understand the law in any way. They would have to go on for years and go through court battles to establish that nonsense. Given that the homeowner couldn’t stay, she is dreaming. If any of these idiots show up in my neighborhood, Sheriff Joe will get a call immediately.

  Here is the dirty little secret …I will use a real life example I know about. This person defaulted on two thousand. When it was all said and done, twenty thousand was paid; garnishments, and fecal matter credit on top of that.

  You all are missing a big point here. If the students stop paying their student loans what will the effect be? What happened when lots of people stopped paying their mortgages? Banks clamped down and it is now WAY harder to get a mortgage. If these students stop paying their loans (it will forever damage their credit and make it impossible to get loans for years to come) and the banks will tighten restrictions on who can get a student loan, which will backfire on these expensive colleges. This might be a good thing.

  Two thoughts on this article. First of all I think CUNY aught to fire her. Advocating stuff like this proves she’s worthless as a professor. Secondly, the government should get out of the student loan business. Actually, it should get out of all lending businesses.
  
  You can’t stop people from being advocates for irresponsibility and anarchy, but you can stop giving them the money and tools to support them. If someone wants a higher education, let them pay for it. If someone wants a house or a car, let them pay for it. If someone wants to lend them money so they can do so, let them. But that doesn’t mean the taxpayers should be on the hook for it. One reason things have gotten so expensive, including education, is all the money thrown at it with no real responsibility for it. Look at the secondary mortgage crisis that bubbled in 2007. That was because government backed the loans and pushed for the loans that banks wouldn’t ordinarily make. If not for the government, we’d still have a healthy economy.

  Mortgages consist of Three Parts… a Title: legal discription… Ownership: Lein upon property by Agency… Loan: Servicing of Payments upon Debt. In most cases, Banks sell off Ownship to a Government Agency… and if a Bank cannot collect Payments, they Foreclose as part of the Debt Servicing which they are paid. So… if the Government will not evict a Squatter… the property is open to be Occupied! HAIL OBAMA!

  Agree! Especially here in the west…..when we saw/see a NO TRESPASSING sign posted there were words that followed and some of the words were very creative at times. Regurgitating this news from awhile back, problem with the wording, illegal aliens…well, here is a universal-sign that is understood by all…NO TRESPASSING. ..Trespassers(formally called illegals) will be prosecuted or (fill in the blanks). This sign DOES NOT descriminate!!! Since most trespassers are from other countries & know “some” english..the signs along the borders, north & south borders, will be posted in ENGLISH ONLY!!! Drones & simple wording sign, will be understood. Keep it simple…..and enforce THE law, trespassers will be (fill in the blanks).P.S. If the trespasser is caught & seen littering, I would prosecute for that too.   DJMAINE….she’s protected under the constitution and her job. But you have to be a student of history to know what Piven is doing. The “thinkers” never do the dirty work because there’s political concerns to be observed. You can’t be seen actually doing the harm you’re asking others to do because then you risk losing your position of influence and the forum from which you speak.
  Did Hitler do the killing and destruction during Krystalnacht? Did Adolf burn down the Reichstag? Lenin yelled “Peace, land and bread”- the same kind of “free stuff” Piven calls for- while his followers did all the dirty work. This is how it works….the Pivens of the world exploit the very protections they seek to eventually undermine. Once in power…they silence all opposition, nothing but party line is tolerated. Also, how far right will that be? Too far will not be good either and we must guard against that…I think a large percentage of the left hanging from trees before we stop moving to the right would be good, though.

It would behoove any financial institution to suspend payments, reduce payments on a temporary basis or do anything else possible to keep people in their homes. Failure to do so is about equal to burning it down with no insurance and the financial institution looses it all. It’s not just the people that were screwed with the financial institution’s self inflicted injuries, how fatal the injuries depend on how they handle the exit from this damage they created.
