Romney Sorry for ‘Dumb Things’ He Did in Prep School After Classmates Say He Bullied Gay Student

Romney Sorry for Dumb Things He Did in Prep School

AP

Mitt Romney offered an apology Thursday for “dumb things” he did in high school after a Washington Post piece alleged that he once tackled a gay student and cut his hair.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee said he had no memory of the incident, though admitted he did some “dumb things” during his time at the Cranbook School in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

“I did some dumb things and if anybody was hurt by that or offended obviously I apologize, but overall high school years were a long time ago,” Romney said on the “Kilmeade and Friends” Fox News radio show, according to ABC News.

According to the Post, the incident took place in 1965 after Romney “spotted something he thought did not belong at a school where the boys wore ties and carried briefcases”:

John Lauber, a soft-spoken new student one year behind Romney, was perpetually teased for his nonconformity and presumed homosexuality. Now he was walking around the all-boys school with bleached-blond hair that draped over one eye, and Romney wasn’t having it.

“He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!” an incensed Romney told Matthew Friedemann, his close friend in the Stevens Hall dorm, according to Friedemann’s recollection. Mitt, the teenaged son of Michigan Gov. George Romney, kept complaining about Lauber’s look, Friedemann recalled.

A few days later, Friedemann entered Stevens Hall off the school’s collegiate quad to find Romney marching out of his own room ahead of a prep school posse shouting about their plan to cut Lauber’s hair. Friedemann followed them to a nearby room where they came upon Lauber, tackled him and pinned him to the ground. As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors.

“I don’t remember that incident and I’ll tell you I certainly don’t believe that I…thought the fellow was homosexual,” Romney said Thursday. “That was the furthest thing from my mind back in the 1960s, so that was not the case.”

The Post spoke with five former students who did recall the incident. Gary Hummel, then a closeted gay student, also remembered trying to speak out in English class only to have Romney call out, “Atta girl!”

“I can’t remember, you know my guess is a lot of time in my years in my boarding school where boys who do something and people say he says ‘atta girl,’ Romney said. “As for the teasing and the taunts that go on in high school, that’s a long time ago, for me that’s about what 48 years ago, if there’s anything I said that was offensive to somebody I’m certainly sorry about that, very deeply sorry about that.”

Romney’s apology comes the day after President Barack Obama said he supports same-sex marriage.

Oh yeah enemedia…this will get the independents running back to Obama in droves…an incident involving a teenaged Mitt Romney in 1965. It’s nice to see the enemedia is in tune with the important things to the nation right now. And how timely…right after Obama announces he’s pro-homosexual marriage. Nah..Obama’s not trying to distract us.

I will quote Dana Perino again…”never underestimate the ability of the Chicago machine to overplay it’s hand”.

This of course is an orchestrated effort by the left. Obama supports gay marriage and then the story comes out that romney bullied a gay kid. This, combined with Romney’s flip-floping history on gay marriage gave obama all the wiggle room he needed. Funny, i thought romney was best suited to beat obama?

The important thing is that Governor Romney cannot recall anything about it, so he himself was not traumatized or negatively affected by the obvious nonconformist pantywaist he was unfairly forced to share the grounds of that exclusive private boarding school with.

This proves Mitt has a finer constitution and sturdier conscience than those other boys who to this day cannot let this harmless prank just fade away in their memories. They are weak.

We shall have two strong M-E-N who do not stay awake worrying over the past, when we elect Mitt and Allen in 2012! Boys will be boys, LOL! Go Romney/West young men!

The White House news media cannot find Obama’s high school record or his Chicago Police Wrap Sheet but they produce high school pranks. Did Obama really attend Harvard Law School? If he didn’t take any classes at Harvard Law it would explain why there is no transcript and he is stupid when it comes to the Law.

Second, this was not bullying. I’ll tell you what bullying is: Those dogs Obama ate….they all had brothers and sisters…..they all had mothers and fathers…Obama didn’t just bully those dogs, he and his whacked-out little friends beat them over the head with a club and then cooked and ate them. He didn’t just call them a name and cut their **** – he beat them, killed them and that ate them. And now he says they were “delicious”.

It is Obama that has flip flopped (not evolved) as he was originally for (1996 State Senator Campaign) then against (US Senate and 1st presidential term campaigns), and then now for again in a blatant attempt to make this contest about anything but our current economic status. Romney has been consistent. Marriage is between a man and a woman. End of sentence.

Leave it to someone so blatantly prejudiced to incorrectly assign the apparent flip flopping in a manner closely associate to bigotry, or blind antimony.

What goes around comes around. I remember Mr Hannity showing a video of Presient Obama while in college introducing Professor Bell and calling his college days radical and thinking that was going to bring him down, however, nothing happened. There’s a new book out about his ex-girlfriend ,
(Genevieve Cook) and I’m sure they were diapponted there wasn’t anything there either.

So many people on this board think that the President has some sordid past but it just isn’t there. So many of these so called “Journalists” (Hannity / Limbaugh) just sit behind their microphones and make these claims. These people have millions at their disposal to go out and find something and I know they are trying. Either they are incompetent journalists or there is nothing there.

I like your comparison…because both happened a long time ago, but there are some subtle differences I think. One, Obama was fed dog rather than making some choice to eat his pet–romney can’t really claim his bullying was something he was made to do. Two, Obama talks about this in his book–admitting to it without a prompt from the media. Three, Obama does not apologize for eating dog, Romney apologizes for the bullying but does not apologize for putting his dog on the roof of his car.
Similarities between the two acts are interesting too. They were both young and they were both acting in line with evangelically christian tenants (animals are part of man’s dominion, homosexuals are to be hated).
Just trying to be objective, maybe I missed something???

Just a few minor corrections. Never should be capitalized, vetted should not. If you wish to continue on with the sentence, only one comma will do. Even so, bull in such case should not be capitalized. Secondly, I can guarantee you would be hard pressed to find any shred of evidence to verify Mr. Beck as a racist. Martin Luther King Jr.’s lawyer attended his 8-28 rally and made the comment “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would have been proud. This doesn’t really fit your line of thinking. Both Fox News and Mr. Beck attributed facts including full sound bites, quotes from Obama’s own writings etc. etc., to validate every claim made. Mr. Beck also encourages his audience to not take his own words but to do the research yourself and make your own conclusions. So really, educate yourself, get a clue, and come out with more than just your own personal bias, ignorant, opinion, you partisan hack.

      Answer this.

Did the 911 commission and CIA say “blowback” from our foreign policy caused 911? I know this will be hard for you to answer, and I am sure you will ignore it but the fact remains they said it. Pointing it out is not unAmerican. The people that continue to push a foreign policy that is against the best interests of the United States are people who are unAmerican.

I think we have corrupt and evil politicians. Calling them out isnt unpatriotic. I dont believe the United States is evil. We do more good around the world than anyone. Our problem lies with our leaders. We have been tricked by a media and a system that allows bad people to stay in office. These people pervert the system to gain from it and then blame others for it. It sickens me and I will continue to point it out.

Look I know your agenda on here is to put down Ron Paul. That is fine, it just shows your ignorance since you never say why he is wrong politically. Calling him or his supporters names is not going to change our minds. If anything it validates our mission to change this country back to what it started as.

Ron Paul could be more detrimental to our national security than even Dear Leader Obama which many Paul acolytes voted for in ’08 (he sure fooled some of you anti-war pansies huh? Lol).

After all, Ron Paul asserts/asserted that he strenuously does not believe the United States had any business getting involved in fighting Hitler in WWII. He expressed to his longtime aide Eric Dondero (which all Paulestinians discount of course as a disgruntled former employee) countless times, that ‘saving the Jews,’ was absolutely none of our (America’s) business and asserts when pressed, that “FDR knew about the attacks of Pearl Harbor weeks before hand, and that WWII was just ‘blowback,’ for Woodrow Wilson’s foreign policy errors, and such. ”

This is consistent with Ron Paul’s insanity in the face of the global rise of militant Islam and the 9-11 Jihad attacks. As with blaming FDR with knowing in advance the Pearl Harbor attack, Ron Paul asserts the crackpot Alex Jones/Truther view that G.W. Bush knew of the 9-11 attacks in advance, and was “gleeful” for the loss of 3,000 lives as a pretext to invade Iraq. It’s bad enough Ron Paul badmouths America on a routine basis, it’s even worse (and I say damn near treasonous) when he goes on enemy State television, to denounce America and our foreign policy so it can be used by the Islamofascists in Iran and others a justification propaganda to prepare and to wage war on “the Great and little Satan”.

What does WW2 have to do with this? According to our founding fathers we didnt have any business getting involved “saving the Jews”. You do realize war is declared by the Congress correct? So as President all he could do is try and over ride it but that can be by passed if Congress believes we should be involved.

He may even have what it takes to win the nomination, we will see. He has eleven states in the bag so far, and I believe he will get more in the following weeks. Yes, for those who say Paul has not won any states, he presently has won in eleven, Romney has won thirteen. At this point it is a virtual tie. The kid needed a haircut. If Obama went to that prep school he would have been given a clipping as well.Because Obama spent his high school years in a stoned “haze” [his words] from the drugs and booze Mitt wouldn’t have needed assistance holding him down.

@Mandors Agreed and I don’t even have a problem with the incident per say. I happen to think what many call peer pressure and even bullying now turned around a lot of kids, particularly the bullies who gotten taken down later in school when other kids caught up to them in size and strength. My point is that this would be an incident that would have been talked about for years later and repetition tends to make one remember it. It is the typical convenient political answer that bothers me. This guy has trouble looking straight into the camera when he answers tough questions. Too often seems like he is searching for the best answer, the answer the individual or group wants to hear. I think it is gonna hurt him along with his flip flops. At the end of the day I hope Ron Paul runs somehow.

“he had no memory of the incident” This is exactly the problem Independents are going to have with Mitt. No one likes a liar and no one would have forgotten such an incident if it happened. So either Friedemann is wrong or when they finally question the members of the posse, how many of them are wrong. Either way it doesn’t sound like an incident someone would forget. Or is there something else that is affecting Mitt’s memory.

@AvengerK In a CNN poll, Obama leads Romney overall by 9 percentage points and by 5 points among independents. Romney leads Obama 47% to 45% among registered voters. The likely GOP nominee has a 6-point edge among independent voters You do actually read and watch some other news outlet than Fox, GB or Rush don’t you.. If it indeed happened then I would think he would remember it as it would be something that would be talked about among his friends from school years later. Save the name calling for your school yard. If it happened he would remember it. Just like he should remember all the positions he took as MA governor to get elected which he now has reversed.

Just me, but ALWAYS counter with a “good-act”. Romney would say, yes, there are some things we do in our youth, but there is one good choice that I made many years ago, to marry my beautiful wife, Ann, the love of my life.
Romney needs to know the attacks will increase and he needs to use his good nature & manners to be very tackfull but firm while answering questions about what he did in his personal life past & present. The hits are going to keep coming. These will test Romney and “they” are waiting for another “Santorum-moment”.

Best Patriot: No, we didn’t do a lot of gay bashing. We just waited until Thursdays and if a suspected gay person wore pink we then knew they were indeed proclaiming to be a “queer-beer”. Nothing said, no bashing, just a lot of guffawing, glancing around the corners, in innocent disbelief. The title “gay” didn’t exist in those days (who knows where that originated). “Queer-beer” seems much more fitting, even now.

Who care about this? If this is the best they can come up with boy Obama is in trouble I also hear he talked back to his mother when he was 5 too. If we were judged by the stupid things we did when we were young none of us would ever get a job. The GAS meter on this one is about zero! The Democrats are desperate and these stories make them look pathetic because you know this came from the left. Next you going to hear that he left a 10% tip instead of 18% once to a poor struggling single mother 25 years ago so he must hate women.
