Family of Romney’s Alleged Bully Victim Speaks Out: ‘The Portrayal of John Is Factually Incorrect’

Family of Romneys Alleged Bully Victim Speaks Out: We Are Aggrieved That He Would Be Used to Further a Political Agenda

On Thursday, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was accused of attacking a student whom he believed to be gay during his prep school years. Although Romney claimed to have no memory of the incident, he apologized on Thursday for the “dumb things” he did back in high school. But now, the family of the purported victim is speaking up and slamming the story as a political ploy.

(Related: Romney Sorry for ‘Dumb Things’ He Did in Prep School AfterClassmates Say He Bullied Gay Student)

Christine Lauber, the older sister of Romney’s classmate, John Lauber, claims she has no knowledge of the bullying incident involving her brother, who passed away from liver cancer in 2004. When ABC News showed Christine the story, she became agitated and somewhat emotional.

“Even if it did happen, John probably wouldn’t have said anything,” she said. “If he were still alive today, he would be furious [about the story].”

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player

Betsy, another sister, spoke up about the incident as well. Aside from stating that the portrayal of her brother is inaccurate, she said the family is frustrated that the story is being used to push a political agenda.

“The family of John Lauber is releasing a statement saying the portrayal of John is factually incorrect and we are aggrieved that he would be used to further a political agenda,” she said. “There will be no more comments from the family.”

As The Blaze originally reported, the accusation has been corroborated by Phillip Maxwell, a lawyer and a former classmate of the top GOP candidate. Others, too, have reportedly corroborated the tale. Here’s the original story, as reported by The Washington Post:

John Lauber, a soft-spoken new student one year behind Romney, was perpetually teased for his nonconformity and presumed homosexuality. Now he was walking around the all-boys school with bleached-blond hair that draped over one eye, and Romney wasn’t having it.

“He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!” an incensed Romney told Matthew Friedemann, his close friend in the Stevens Hall dorm, according to Friedemann’s recollection. Mitt, the teenaged son of Michigan Gov. George Romney, kept complaining about Lauber’s look, Friedemann recalled.

A few days later, Friedemann entered Stevens Hall off the school’s collegiate quad to find Romney marching out of his own room ahead of a prep school posse shouting about their plan to cut Lauber’s hair. Friedemann followed them to a nearby room where they came upon Lauber, tackled him and pinned him to the ground. As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors.

Over on Breitbart.com, the Washington Post was accused of inflating witness testimony in reporting on the bullying story. According to the news site, the original article read:

“I always enjoyed his pranks,” said Stu White, a popular friend of Romney’s who went on to a career as a public school teacher and has long been bothered by the Lauber incident.

Then, in an interview on ABC News, Breitbart.com notes that White railed against this notion. The ex-classmate apparently said that he wasn’t at the school when the prank unfolded and that he only found out about it a few weeks ago. This, of course, calls into question the notion that White was bothered by the incident for a long time (after all, he just learned about it).

Breitbart.com charges that the Post, after falsifying the testimony, made a correction within the article, which now reads:

“I always enjoyed his pranks,” said Stu White, a popular friend of Romney’s who went on to a career as a public school teacher and said he has been “disturbed” by the Lauber incident since hearing about it several weeks ago, before being contacted by The Washington Post“But I was not the brunt of any of his pranks.” [emphasis added]

While this says little about whether the incident actually unfolded as some witnesses claim, it is noteworthy that the Post purportedly added to the story. It is here, using this example, that many will certainly claim bias.

Romney, of course, has apologized for hurting anyone during his high school years, but aside from not remembering the aforementioned incident, he has said that those years are far behind him. Since the allegations came to light, the Romney campaign has worked diligently to expel the implications that the candidate was a bully during his teen years.

“Mitt was a thoughtful guy with a great sense of humor who cared about his classmates. He had a good perspective on how to balance all the pressures high school students face,” said Richard Moon, a former classmate, in a statement released by the campaign. “He would never go out and do anything mean spirited. Clownish, yes. Never mean.”

Ex-classmate John French echoed this sentiment in the release as well, stating, ”Mitt never had a malicious bone in his body – trying to imply or characterize him as a bully is absurd.”

The scandal over the purported bullying incident came just one day after President Barack Obama announced his support for same-sex marriage. Naturally, some are questioning the timing of this story as it pertains to the aforementioned announcement.

This story has been updated.

So at the end of the day we have spin blogs funded by wealthy zealots on both sides of the political spectrum that produce infinite amounts of BS either accusing or defending. No interest in the truth, no concern for the truth. The only truth that seems to matter is that which supports the reader’s ideological inertia. We truly have become a country where it is all about the money. GB and Rush feed the angry mob for one and only one reason….. MONEY. As do the similar jokers on the left.

This whole thing is just too stupid. How many of us did things during our school years? I remember yet, getting into a fight with some kid named Fisher when in the 6th grade and getting into trouble over it.
What bothers me most are the lies from the White House on a constant basis. I’ve been getting a good idea of lies vs truth from Google in last few months, in fact it’s all falling into line with what I’ve suspected. You rebuild a past when you’re ashamed of it, or you rebuild it to deceive the public.

If you are going to make a point, try using correct spelling and grammar. You should know better than to copy and paste your talking points from the DNC website. Obama has closed many more factories than Romney with his economic policies…not to mention forcing small businesses to close or over regulating to the point where companies are never able to get off the ground.

As for rich prep school brats, are you referring to Obama’s children? You seem to take issue with how he is raising his own children of privilege since it’s very similar to how Romney was raised except for the future government paid abortions they may get.

How can Romney’s school friend Stu White tell the Washington Post that he has “long been bothered by the Lauber incident” – and then later admit to ABC News that he was “not present for the prank” and “was not aware of it until this year when he was contacted by the Washington Post”?

      So ENCIDIOT..CAN YOU READ?

David Murray of Automobile Magazine has an article coming out in the June 2012 edition about Romney’s youth and interviewed some of the same people the WaPo is quoting:

The interview offers: [...] Maxwell giving crucial details notably missing from the Post piece: “’I’m a Democrat, so I won’t vote for him,’ says Maxwell. ‘But he’d probably make a pretty good President. He’s very smart, very principled.’”

Gosh ENCIDIOT..the one guy you tried to tell me I didn’t know about has admitted he wont’ be voting for Romney and is a democrat. CAN YOU READ?

Maxwell goes on..“‘He’s (Romney) determined to claim the highest office in the land–to be the first Mormon to do it. He keeps that undercover because he doesn’t want to frighten people.’”.

For some reason, Repubs ALWAYS respond or “defend” too much–Santorum did it too!!!

Stop letting the ohter guys “control the conversation.” Igorne their barbs and go forward with what the conservative side wants people to know. We are right, we are winning and we will WIN!!! The “real people” of the U.S., black white or “purple” are intelligent, thinkers and will listen, especially when things they are being fed don’t make sense.

Hold to truth, control the conversation and let them point fingers whereever. The more they point at others, the more they point out “O”‘s failings, holes, lies, and agendas!

      Truth LIVES and REIGNS!

This is exactly why, media and politics disgust those of US who know the difference between ploys and truisms. Media is a gossip cesspool, and those who feed it, the waste. Do I really care what Romney or Obama did in their teens, as long as it wasn’t cruel and unusual? Why can’t you goons in media stay on the issues? I’ll tell you why, because you know how easy it is to divert the majority of the public’s attention. You are deviates…pure and simple. for my part, I have never felt so much contempt for any medium, and the miscreants who represent it.

Unbelievable . To see the Democrat Party whose people make up the ACORN, SEIU, union mobs who Occupied Wisconsin , bankers front yards and their OWS Movement which clogs our public spaces, endangers our police and blows up city budgets , to have the gall to dig up a high school incident about their political opponent today is beyond outrageous. BUT it is a typical example of the mean-spirited, dirty, sleazy, BULLYING tactics of our now Far Left Democrat Party ! Al Capone , Saul Alinsky, and Adolph would be so proud of the storm trooper tactics of our Far Left Democrats ! Normal Americans despise your for it. I did some stupid things in 1965 too, like routinely poop in my pants, of course I was a baby at the time but apparently insignificant things we may have done almost 50 years ago matters to so many people I feel I have to get this off my chest. I have done a lot of growing since then and am sorry for any distress I may have caused. That is just about as dumb as this whole business about Romney. I don’t think he did what he is being accused of, but even if he did, he was a kid. Let it go, if you have to look that far to dig up dirt it should be better dirt.

I’ll bet if the Democrap operatives dig deep enough they’ll find out that Romney kicked his mother before he was born, while she was pregnant with him.

Digging for dirt on a rather straight forward man is going to be hard to do. But I’m sure they won’t let that stop them. They’ll make up all sorts of lies if they have to. How desparate do you have to be to go back to someone’s high school days looking for dirt on them?

You know what else I heard? Romney smoked weed and got drunk in high school, oh wait, that was Obama. But Romney snorted coke in college, oh wait, that was Obama. But Romney attended a anti-American, anti-white church for 20 years. Oh wait, that was Obama. But Romney was best friends with a known terrorist and bomber who killed a police officer. Oh wait, that was Obama too. But I heard that Romney hates Jews, hates Isreal and supports the Plaestinians and Muslem Brotherhood. Oh wait, that is Obama. Hold on a second, I heard Romney is a communist who hates America and the free enterprise system that has made us the richest most prosperous country in the history of the planet. Oh wait……..

First off, you have to define your term “civil liberties.” If you define it as “rights,” then our rights are defined in the Constitution, and I’m certain that Romney supports every one of them. If you define “civil liberties” as things that you BELIEVE people ought to be able to do, then there is plenty of room for dissention. If you are referring to the recent discussion of homosexual marriage, then I fail to see how society not endorsing the subject (no, it is not a right!) infringes on freedom. In this country, gay people are able to cohabitate, to leave their property ot oneanother, and raise children together. Society simply will not abide by elevating their relationships to the same level as marriage.
This is just another example of using a phrase that evokes an emotional response to avoide having to substantiate your position. Much like using the term “bigot,” using the terms “civil liberties” and “freedom” is designed to shut down discussion.

How the TSA, DHS, etc aren’t vilolations of our 10th amendment. How the tough gun laws in MA, which “he supports” aren’t a violation of the 2nd amendment….
