Libertarian MSNBC Guest Gets Mic Cut Off for Refusing to Debate ‘Non-Story’

Back when the O’Reilly Factor was first gaining popularity, one of the common, and wildly misguided, complaints against the show by liberal commentators was that the host, Bill O’Reilly, was too willing to cut off the microphones of guests when they didn’t say things he liked. Now, years later, the actual tactic is applied with equal gusto all over television. Unfortunately, it is rarely applied with the right judgment.

Exhibit A: Today, on MSNBC, anchor Tamron Hall invited libertarian author Tim Carney on to discuss the current controversy that exists regarding Mitt Romney’s instances of high school “bullying.” Carney refused to treat the story seriously, and criticized Hall for giving it credence. Hall…did not take it well:

Here’s the relevant part of the transcript, excerpted from the Washington Free Beacon:

CARNEY: You are bringing up a meta story here, which is, “What is the Romney response to this other non-story?” I’m trying to go meta-meta on you, and say here’s some media treatment—

HALL: You don’t want me to go anything on you, because you are actually irritating me right now. I’m going to be honest with you—yes, you are, because you knew the questions and topics we were going to discuss. You knew them; you agreed. And we are not talking or demeaning—listen, 50 years ago, I was a much tougher kid probably than Mitt Romney was in high school. I’m not talking about the issue of whether he was bullying or not. He says he doesn’t remember; to be fair, I cannot say he does. What I am asking about is how the campaign has handled this situation, how he handled the Colorado reporter, how he handled same-sex marriage where he said he agrees with gay parents be able to adopt, but he does not agree with same-sex marriage? Just the handling of questions beyond the economy. If you’re not comfortable talking about that, I am a-okay, but you’re not going to come on and insult me, you’re not going to come on and insult the network when you knew what you were going to come on and talk about. Done. Now, let me talk to Jimmy, I’m done.

CARNEY: Are you going to cut me off?

HALL: Yes, I am.

And with that, it was over. Word of advice to Ms. Hall – preemptively shutting up a guest when you’re trying to condemn someone for “bullying” is dangerous to one’s credibility.

  Sounds to me like he agreed to discuss several topics. He was allowed to be on the show contingent on his agreement to those conditions. Then he abrogated the agreement and refused to discuss the topics and pretended that it was outrageous that he was asked the questions he knew up front were coming. Wimp.
  
  No matter. You’re going to see Romney and his surrogates not answer lots of questions from here forward. Romney knows he can’t win a general election, an election by Americans, if he stakes out any actual position on an actual on issue. If you expect him to, you’ll be disappointed.

  Thank God I don’t have to resort to watching MSNBC and seeing this horrible woman. Don’t even know who she is, but from the clip, I know she won’t have a job interviewing with this horrific attitude toward others. Don’t even know the man, but I didn’t think he caused her to act like she did.
  If I ever see her face again or any program, I will immediately shut off the TV. This is why I pay for cable, so I don’t have to watch hateful people on these liberal news programs ever again.

  In reply to JZS: This is a prime example of a double standard in the what is starting to be called the government media. You will find no stories that would even be a bit hostile to Obama. To go back almost 50 years to find something that would possible look bad, well that is a bit of a stretch. When these in this media begin to vent Obama the same way Romney is being vented, then my opinion may be somewhat different. (Come on I am 56 years old and well I can’t say that all I did while as a teenager would earn me a halo. I would venture to say the same for about most every teenage.) And then you got OBAMA…no left media let’s don’t vent him. You will probably find some written facts on the subject. But then again that would be to easy!!

  @Rightallalong: I remember watching the first one when it aired. It was either those or during his interviews with Geraldo after the VTech shooting that started to disturb me about O’Reilly. That’s when I started referring to him as a Progressive. When he got on Stossel’s case for wanting to move back toward the Constitution and referred to people that wanted to use drugs (marijuana, etc) as causing “chaos in the streets” is when the final nail had been put in the coffin.
  
  O’Reilly has either moved to the left or he was always there. In any case, I can no longer watch him because 1) he isn’t an independent and 2) he is most definitely not a Conservative. To talk about looters right after showing video of a 70 year old woman being pulled out of her house and being disarmed and claim it’s necessary to maintain “order” smacks of extreme leftism. I remember a few news accounts of Katrina where citizens were refusing to leave their homes and give up their arms. This lady was old and week, so she’s an easy target for law enforcement. The others were not so they couldn’t do anything.
  
  The Constitution is not hard to interpret. It was written in very plain language. Our “elites” have made it sound like it must be read and interpreted carefully, else we will have chaos. And that’s all BS.

Understand one thing, there is no such thing as a ‘bound’ delegate at the national level. That as per the head RNC legal counsel. So, even though Paul has taken a lot of the states that are shown in the graphic given as ‘proof’ Paul doesn’t have many delegates (they are still guessing by using the straw poll results) he’ll get even more when the delegates chosen for Romney jump ship in Tampa. Will they all do it? No, but there are a LOT that WILL. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens… should be interesting!

  I have seen Tami do her thing on MSNBC enough to see her lack of professionalism and lack of ability. I really don’t care who the guest is or was; but this c-rate anchor indeed belongs on the lamest, least-watched ‘news’ channel to be sure. Just another stupid lib on cable.
