Professor’s Appalling Rant to Students: Cops Are ‘Piggish,’ Conservatives Are ‘Schmucks,’ America is ‘Perverse Place,’ Need To Revisit ‘Useful’ Marxist Concepts

According to The University of Pennsylvania Professor Philippe Bourgois:

Professors Appalling Rant to Students: Cops Are Piggish, Conservatives Are Schmucks, America is Perverse Place, Need To Revisit Useful Marxist Concepts

  • Conservatives ”brutalize the poor” and are “mean-spirited schmucks”
  • Police are “rough, mean, vicious, nasty and piggish”
  • Police will make up charges to incarcerate you
  • Karl Marx is “useful” and we need to revisit his concepts
  • The prison system in America is “an unjustifiable outrage”
  • America is a “perverse place, not the Land of the Free”
  • Doctors “make tons of money” off the poor

There has been no shortage of  partisan teaching in the news lately, but Professor Philippe Bourgois of The University of Pennsylvania may have just brought proselytizing from the lectern to a new low.

Bourgois, a Professor of Anthropology at Penn, gave a public lecture recently slandering police officers, conservatives, doctors and America itself, all while encouraging and complimenting the teachings of Karl Marx.  The rant took place in front of students on the campus of Bryn Mawr College, located west of Philadelphia.  The talk was a panel discussion entitled ‘The Transformation of Poverty Governance’ and revolved around how America is handling it’s welfare state.

The Penn professor began his remarks by noting a study that the greatest welfare discrepancy occurs in “conservative” neighborhoods.  Bourgois then accused conservatives of “brutalizing the poor” before labeling all conservatives “mean-spirited schmucks.”

Professors Appalling Rant to Students: Cops Are Piggish, Conservatives Are Schmucks, America is Perverse Place, Need To Revisit Useful Marxist Concepts

Professor Bourgois continued to define a culture of service discrepancy by discussing his neighborhood in Northern Philadelphia.  He encouraged the students to study why police are “rough, mean, vicious, nasty and piggish” in his part of town.  He went on to describe his version of police protocol, ”they’ll knock you to the ground, handcuff you, kick you” and than accused the officers of criminal injustice “They’ll make sure you get that felony no matter what by inventing that you beat them up with a baseball bat.”

Bourgois reminded the audience that “The McCarthy years” are over so “we need to dust out the very useful Marxist concepts.”  Particularly, the professor mentions the Marxist concept of ‘lumpenproletaria‘, which describes people that are of no use in a revolutionary struggle and lists them as an impediment to the realization of a classless society.  He determines that this term encompasses Americas poor.

Professors Appalling Rant to Students: Cops Are Piggish, Conservatives Are Schmucks, America is Perverse Place, Need To Revisit Useful Marxist Concepts

Useful.

The Penn professor goes on to note that no one can make money off the poor “except prison contractors and prison Unions and doctors” who get to make “tons of money off obesity” and other diseases that “we impose on people with poverty.”

When the topic shifted to prison incarceration rates, Bourgois took dead aim at American society. Calling our rate of incarceration “an unjustifiable outrage”, he concluded that America “is not the Land of the Free” and rather, “a perverse place.”

Bourgois was forced to leave the panel early due to his University of Pennsylvania teaching duties, but noted his willingness to cancel on his own students, “It’s only because it’s the last class, otherwise I would have canceled it.”

Professors Appalling Rant to Students: Cops Are Piggish, Conservatives Are Schmucks, America is Perverse Place, Need To Revisit Useful Marxist Concepts

Bourgois was joined on the panel by socialist UCNY professor Frances Fox Piven and Georgetown Policy Researcher Michael Lipsky.

I love it when Academics who make money off the public, criticize Capitalism. I wonder what his salary is. If Marx was right, he is a teacher, what is his great contribution, he doesn’t serve the state’s interests. Anthropology is a “perspective” science, it doesn’t serve a great purpose to the general populace.

What poor Americans is he referring too? The ones who have AC in their homes/apartments, the ones with cell phones, TV’s (2each) DVD player and who can get food easily through EBT or the local pantry. Those poor people live better today than my nuclear American family of the 1970s where only my father worked as a city bus driver.

These liberals distort and flat out invent lies to get their agenda moved forward. Nothing in American society matches up with what they put forward as truth. In America…Everyone gets to dance, everyone gets a shot, everyone gets a break and everyone can get ahead if they apply themselves and even if they do not thanks to an ever over reaching big government.

My first duty station (circa 1982-84) was the Philippines where real poverty exists still to this day. I never saw happier people anywhere in the world. They did not know they were poor by our standards and they did not consider themselves victims. They got up everyday and put their best foot forward. Americans need to get back to this.

Yes they are the first to get shot because they cannot be trusted not to actually start telling the truth about the real American system built around the US constitution. People are fickle that way. Put the boots to them, then they begin to see things a little differently. They begin to see the err of their ways and what they have wrought albiet for a very brief time…hopefully the Calvary can come over the hill, but I am afraid that when America fails, there will be no one to rescue us. Russia? China? Do we want to live under their rule?

How can the United States of America allow this type person to teach our children? Why do people keep giving endowments to this type college?
This man is a shame to America and should move where they appreciate communists, not here. That way he can be among his own, the socialist, marxist and communists and love their freedom if he doesn’t love ours.
We need to kick the azzes of these anti-American professors out of all schools and higher education.

It may be hard for some of you to admit, but he is right on everything but Marxism. Personally, I think that anyone who believes in socialist or marxist state should be deported to Cuba or China immediately. I don’t like it at all. BUT, you have to concede that we DO live in a police state and that our medical system is a farce, designed to keep you sick for longer and thus suck money out of you. It starts all the way at the bottom by regulating the “supply” of medical professionals to people who have attended a formal training school (nurses) or college and then a formal training (doctors). There is no reason why a person wanting to be a doctor should have to take 4 years of college and earn a degree in a field they will never use in order to become a family practice physician. They can learn all they need from a single course of study at a medical school. The normal physician is not doing calculus, organic chemistry, physics, micro-biology, or writing articles fit for publishing in his daily work.

I had a prof in college that taught an upper level sociology class that was an admitted marxist. He taught this class as an indoctrination to his beliefs. I was already well into my 30s when I took this class so I already had my own belief system but most of the “mush-heads” in the class bought it hook line and sinker. There were a few that accused him during class time of indoctrination during the semester but he laughed it off and told tham that he was right and they were wrong about how things should work.

You are looking at the symptoms not the cause, the cause is “demoralization” since the 60′s, the ideological encroachment of “modern liberalism” aka socialism, the lack of personal responsibility, accountability and self reliance.

The irony and logical fallacy from these “Leftists” intellectuals is that they promote marxism/communism/socialism as the solution to problems which have been creating by the very subversion of individual liberty and subtle incremental imposition of Socialism.

These problem do exist but they have been exacerbated or created by the “modern liberal” ideology which has undermined the shared values and culture which binds Western society.. Marxism exploits or creates is a perpetual crisis. So, it is creeping Marxist ideology that has saved or created these problems..

They have created an “open” society which is diverse, weakened and easily subverted.

Your comment is completely accurate but watch out for the “scientifically proven” comeback. Fat poor people claim that the cheaper foods have more fat content, which is why they’re fatter even though they eat less.

I don’t know where they grocery shop but I’ve found out, that a bag of brocolli, some carrots and or cauliflour, with some ceaser salad dressing for flavor, or some apples or oranges or something, is far cheaper than chips, tacos and candy.

And I never cared for the vegies when I younger either with age I became afflicted with that “I can’t eat like I did when I was a hyperactive youth” condition.

Also, a lot of the “I’m hefty cause I’m poor” people watch too much tv and I’ve never been able to do that without going for a snack.

So something I did to change eating habits, when I found I was gaining weight, was go for a walk. It stopped me from automatically going to the fridge when I just thought I was hungry.

And another little fact that seems to have escaped the perpetually unemployed, volunteer work. It’s not what you know it’s who you know, and a great way to get a foot in the door. Potential employers have a no risk opportunity to view your a work ethic and even if nothing comes out of it, you get out of the house, you ain’t eating all day, and you’ve helped somebody else out.

      Oops.

I think I just went off on a rant.

What is he talking about – Reagan was a Compassionate Conservative Republican.

Reagan lowered the amount we spend on Welfare per recipient from a $47,000 cost to distribute just one recipient to under $20,000 – Then he raised the amount that Welfare Recipients get. He save Welfare.

Today under Obama, America is now spending over $100,000 a year to pay just one Recipient. The Recipient get $10,000 a year in benefits – where is the rest of the over $90,000 going. NO BODY WILL TELL YOU. Not one Presidential Candidate today can tell you just how Reagan set Clinton up for a Balance Budget – In Clinton 1st year. Thanks Reagan – you were a great American.

I predict that within one month after Obama’s Re-election – Welfare will be wiped out by Obama – Muslims don’t care one bit about those that can’t work – A Muslim believes they should starve or work. Yet, Millions of Welfare recipients follow the very man that is going to destroy them.

Don’t communist countries detest the educated class? They are generally rounded up and either sent to a gulag or just plain shot. The Cultural Revolution, Pol Pot, the Soviet purges, etc. all targeted people just like this twit. So either he wants to be dictator or he is so stupid he doesn’t realize he will be the first to be executed under that wonderful communism government he longs for. My money is on choice B. @SgtB: “There is no reason why a person wanting to be a doctor should have to take 4 years of college and earn a degree in a field they will never use in order to become a family practice physician. They can learn all they need from a single course of study at a medical school. The normal physician is not doing calculus, organic chemistry, physics, micro-biology, or writing articles fit for publishing in his daily work.”

I’m one of those chronically ill people who’s alive & doing well because I have excellent drs. I want my drs to be well-trained. Calculus, physics, & writing train the mind to think in ways other subjects do not. Organic chemistry, & micro-biology are directly related to medicine: learning human chemistry is vital. Micro-biology shows potential drs the level on which many illnesses are diagnosed & treated. Family drs today are not country drs of of the past. We can’t go back to that time. Medicine is different. Flannery O”Connor died of lupus in the ’50s. I undergo chemo every 6 mos & live a much fuller life than she ever could. It takes drs, including my family dr, w/ the training to diagnosis & treat me. I also have several other Lupus-related illnesses & live a better, fuller life because of well-trained drs. (My family dr diagnosed & treated a flesh eating bacteria. It was healed in 1 wk.) My illness is not the result of an unhealthy lifestyle. It’s genetic. Drs w/ adequate training r keeping people like me alive. 50 yrs ago, people like me die

@ DANO… I would add one more factor to your astute observations. Those on the government dole are likely not working, hence they are idle most of the time. Inactivity has as much to do with obesity as does diet. I’m not surprised the genius profiled in this article overlooked something so obvious. Those who can do, those who can’t, teach. Nuf’ said.

You wouldn’t want those terrible police to risk their lives and come and rescue you, would you? Speaking of the great things that Marx has done, why not go to a country where they followed his teachings and see how the police treat people there? The former Soviet Union, China, Cuba, and Viet Nam are all known for how “enlightened” their police forces are. By “enlightened” I mean that they will “enlighted” your head by putting a bullet through it. And the Soviet Unions Gulags are well known for how gently they treat their prisoners, those who survive their visit to those fine facilities. As for getting rich off of poor people and forcing them in to obesity, just how do they do that? I thought that by definition poor people are, well, poor. As for being forced into obesity, what’s your answer? Stop giving them food stamps and money to buy food with? I guess that would work. You seldom see fat starving people. To quote B. This is one of the guys that gets to become those thuggs that brutalize people in those other places. he does not think they are bad places any more than those that run those bad places. This kind of liberal really thinks that they should be in control of things and that when it turns into the hell we see there they think it’s justifiable. But as long as they are the ones in power that makes any action they take to stay in power okay. They will never see a marxist society from the vantage point of the oppressed because it is really all about them being the powerful ones so it always works fine for them. They are willing to sacrifice the entire world and see billions die as long as they get their way.. This is “modern liberalism” aka Socialism, the ideology is based on lies, deceit, and deception.

It is psychological warfare,, going for decades but each generation has been increasingly demoralized…

Why do you think he is saying this now, it’s his “Get out of Dachau Free” card. Just like some Jews that worked for the Nazi’s to avoid the camps for one more day of life.

When the Socialists have total power they have ALWAYS killed the educated and anyone that Doesn’t work with their hands across the board. THEN they start checking how you think and kill you if you’re not PC.

And you wondered WHY Profs Don’t teach history anymore. You might learn the truth about them.

    One at a time:
“Conservatives “brutalize the poor” and are “mean-spirited schmucks” ”

Sometimes, sometimes not. Liberals always do it though.

“Police are “rough, mean, vicious, nasty and piggish” ”

Increasingly so, I’m afraid. Local are far better than city though.

“Police will make up charges to incarcerate you”

Absolutely true and it happens each and every day. You learn this if you actually exercise your liberties.

“Karl Marx is “useful” and we need to revisit his concepts”
Marx was an absolute idiot and his thoughts have caused more deaths in the world than any other person’s thoughts.

“The prison system in America is “an unjustifiable outrage” ”
    It does suck, yes.

“America is a “perverse place, not the Land of the Free” ”

Half and half. We’re clearly not free any longer though.

“Doctors “make tons of money” off the poor ”
How does one make tons of money off people who, by definition, have no money?

It’s funny you responded to the topic the way you did GHOST because I’ve seen more than one Libertarian, Ron Paul supporter, and others with the same basic “bent” rant just like this professor with a few minor tweeks just as you.

I even read one Paul guy here on The Blaze defending Marx to a certain extent regarding Capitalism and new paradigms and stating that Marx coined the term Capitalism, therefor the definition must belong to his original interpretation. He also suggested that much many of what Marx has said might have come true?

I think if we dig a litttle further on this guy we might even find that he’s a Ron Paul supporter eh?

You’ve not disputed a thing I said. Our prison system does suck (it doesn’t rehabilitate, and in fact it’s considered “grad school” for professional criminal skills), cops are getting out of hand (the Blaze posts all kinds of articles about this), and if you knew a thing about liberties like open carry of firearms you’d know immediately that cops will invent “crimes” out of thin air in order to detain and arrest people for peacefully exercising their rights. This is no secret. And you’ve not disputed, with any kind of facts, any of it.

Additionally, your Ron Paul obsession is rather tired. Get a new schtick, you’re the only guy brining him up in the conversation. Frankly, I’m not concerned with your obsessive compulsive neurosis. Discuss the topic, or plan on being ignored. Thanks.

I’ve refuted this “bent” of your’s (like this Professor’s) time and time again. From what I’m reading fom most of the comments here… most of the posters don’t particularly care for his “bent” either.

As far as my “obsession” and schtick? Of course you wouldn’t care for what I say when it exposes the same or similar “bent” you and those like you have as the Professor in this topic.

That “bent” is why Conservatives need to kick you and those like you to the curb.

Isn’t it crazy that people push Karl Marx as someone to emulate? Useful and we need to revisit his ideas? Seriously, haven’t we got half of the people in our nation living off the work of the other half? Isn’t that all Marx did- live off the labor of someone else, because his writing couldn’t support him? Engels took care of him. I am not Engels. I feel bad for alot of people who have lost their jobs out of this mess our benevolence has put us in. What about the slaves(modern day taxpayers)? When do the productive get the right to complain? Hey TIME, there you go again, trying to associate Ron Paul and his supporters with anything negative, and once again you FAIL. For one thing GHOST makes no reference to Ron Paul or being a libertarian. GHOST clearly is more intelligent than you, and owned tyou in the comment argument; you make little to no sense, muddled with lies. Secondly, Ron Paul, and his supporters are the complete opposite of this professor. Nothing about Ron Paul is Marxist, he is the polar opposite.
I like how you just assume people on here are Paul supporters/libertarians.

      ——
Really?? If that’s true, then why do RP supporters agree with EVERYTHING he says, except Marx? It’s a matter of PRINCIPLE not to agree with the enemy. You do agree that Marxists are THE ENEMY, right? My bad. You Paulists actually think EVERYONE but RP is the enemy. That’s why some of you joined the OWS crowd for a while there.

=> “Nothing about Ron Paul is Marxist, he is the polar opposite.”

Not the polar opposite. Polar opposites don’t touch, and as I said, you all share grievances with American Marxists. In fact, you’ve borrowed some of their lexicon. Paulists call Republicans “the establishment,” and flaunt your “superior” understanding of the Constitution in almost every comment you post – just like the commies.

Nope, the polar opposite of “evil” is “good,” and Paul is far from “good.” He is divisive, he is a career politician, he uses all sorts of shenanigans to try to retain power, and when he is caught expressing or allowing his people to express extreme (e.g., pro-Palestinian) views, he hands us the usual totalitarian-handbook lies: “I wasn’t aware. It didn’t happen. He (the whistle-blower) is lying. You are an uneducated fool.” And as sheeple, you follow suit. (CONT.)

I can’t imagine God agreeing with Satan on ANYTHING, do you? It’s not that Satan always lies. Sometimes he tells half-truths. Sometimes he exposes faults, but his MOTIVE is always to divide and conquer. Most importantly — and this applies to you Paulists — when he criticizes GOOD people’s misgivings, he does it out of a hateful, spiteful heart.

We are not “obsessed with RP,” as your GHOST pal claims. YOU (plural) are. YOU (plural) have joined with the Marxists against US conservatives, in this our time of greatest need. We are about to lose the Republic, and all you people do is join THEIR chorus about what is wrong with America and how you won’t vote for Romney because he is the same as Obama. You useful idiots are pathetic. If/when you stop your high treason, THEN we will hold our peace.

It may seem as though I’m acting as if we’ve had numerous conversations on here, but who cares how I talk to you, what does that matter? Your comments are so ignorant and false that someone needs to call you out, and I’ll be that guy from now on.

**I have no problem defending others…I don’t see anyone being a cheerleader for you, no one backs up your comments, in fact more people disagree and make fun of you than anything else, so what does that tell you?
As for original comments of my own, I don’t feel the need to state the obvious. For example, why would I post stuff about this professor that has already been said, there’s no need to call this guy a communist, liberal blah blah, when 20 people said as much already. Now maybe if there were only a handful of comments or people are missing the point, then I would post something. I’m not on here to make witty/funny comments. I like facts, plain and simple. But I will call out idiots like you who falsely accuse.

      1. Conservatives “brutalize the poor” and are “mean-spirited schmucks”

      2. Police are “rough, mean, vicious, nasty and piggish”
—guess what Ron Paul never said anything like this either, so again KRYPT you are wrong, or provide a link. (do not confuse with his stance against the war on drugs)
      3. Police will make up charges to incarcerate you
—I’ve never heard ROn call out police like this, have you?….link please.
      4. The prison system in America is “an unjustifiable outrage”
—If anyone thinks our prison system is awesome, please stand up. I’m not sure Ron’s stance on the prison system, but I know he knows it’s far from perfect. So this may be the only one you are right on Krypt. But I’m glad.
      5. America is a “perverse place, not the Land of the Free”
—RON PAUL WOULD NEVER SAY SOMETHING LIKE THIS, nor does he believe that, so come on KRYPT i thought “RP supporters agree with EVERYTHING he says, except Marx”
      6. Doctors “make tons of money” off the poor
—He is a doctor, so obviously he doesn’t feel that way, provide one statement, or link that can refute me…

That’s funny that you write that because you said the same exact thing the last time you posted to me then disappeared quicker than Ron Paul on his Pee Wee Herman bicycle riding off into the sunset. Will this second “calling out” be before or after I call out the usual suspects/insurgents for Libertarianism or Ron Paul? Should be fun! But stick to your “calling out” threat this time okay? Holding that there are problems with our prison system is high treason?
      —–
OK. Let me break it down for your Paulist view of reality.

You agree with this prof that our prison system “sucks.” Do you also agree with his LANGUAGE? That America’s “incarcerated people” are “unfree people?” And that therefore we are a “perverse place?” That it has “specifically to do with race management?” That this “punitive carceralization” originates in “wrong methods of governance?”

See, once you change the language, you are transforming the mind (aka indoctrinating). This “lecture” is one massive piece of communist indoctrination. So when you or Paul agree with a commie — and you both have — who is using the podium to attack our foundational makeup, then you are siding with the enemy. As a patriot, you have a right to want to effect change; you do not have the right to side with those who are trying to subvert America. Those are basic tenets of patriotism, and I shouldn’t have to spell it out for the RP crowd.

On a personal note, I’ve come to the conclusion that most Paulists are at odds with God’s sense of justice. For example, hell has more incarcerated, un-free people than the human mind can grasp, despite how deeply it hurts God to send them there.
