Most everyone knows about the warning on aerosol cans that advise against using the product near an open flame or heat. Brett Sigworth was aware of these warnings, but he still caught fire after spraying on sunscreen and then moving toward his charcoal grill.
Sigworth of Stow, Mass., says he was far from the grill when he sprayed on the Banana Boat lotion and rubbed it in. He also says that the can doesn’t mention anything about a risk of becoming flammable after applying the product completely.
The CBS affiliate WBZ-TV reports Sigworth suffered second degree burns anywhere he had applied the lotion. Sigworth said, “I sprayed on the spray-on sunscreen, and then rubbed it on for a few seconds. I walked over to my grill, took one of the holders to move some of the charcoal briquettes around and all of a sudden it went up my arm.”
WBZ more specifically notes the warning on the spray lotion states “flammable, don’t use near heat, flame or while burning.” But Sigworth did not think this warning applied to after the product had been rubbed onto ones skin.
After catching on fire, Sigworth told WBZ his friends and girlfriend helped snuff him out, which doctors say helped lessen the degree of his injury.
Sigworth has an attorney, but he is not suing Banana Boat. He simply wants to know why more testing wasn’t done on the product in this manner and would like to see more warnings on the canister.

Jun. 1, 2012 at 7:18pmSo he thinks a flammable product is no longer flammable when applied to skin? Well, the key part of the article is “But Sigworth did not think….”
Now he gets to pay (as Dave Ramsey says) “Stupid Tax.”

Jun. 1, 2012 at 8:02pmWay too funny, souunds like my husbands sense of humor. I used an aerosol sun screen (I have had 2 types of skin cancer). So I liberally doused myself with the spray only to break out in blemishes where the spray was applied. (it took 2-3 weeks for the blemishes to disappear). There was nothing on the label for any skin reactions, and I have since changed my sun screen. But yes, anything that is an aerosol I believe has alcohol in it although I am not sure about that.

Jun. 1, 2012 at 5:46pmAnother law suit for sure. Blame stupidity on the sun screen company for not having enough warnings on the sunscreen container. “Do not be within 20 feet of charcoal grill or open fires after applying sunscreen.”

Jun. 1, 2012 at 5:45pmLittle know fact, kerosene makes a great sunblock, and gives your skin that healthy glow……just don’t smoke or be around any flammable source.
Was the name of the sunblock “Richard Prior’s SPF 1000″?
Maybe he was just getting ready for Burning Man.
Ironically he was humming “I’m too sexy for my skin, too sexy for my skin.” as he put on the sunscreen.
There was also a man named Buffalo Bill in the room telling him “It puts it on its skin, or it gets the fire again.”
