Matt Lauer Hammers Mayor Bloomberg Over Banning Large Sodas…While Supporting National Donut Day

Matt Lauer Mayor Michael Bloomberg Large Soda Ban Donut DayMatt Lauer took on New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Friday over his administration’s plan to ban the sale of large soft drinks — while coming out in support of National Donut Day at the same time.

“Your administration has come out in support of National Donut Day,” Lauer said on NBC’s “Today.” “It sounds ridiculous.”

“It doesn’t sound ridiculous, one donut is not going to hurt you,” Bloomberg, a political independent, defended. “In moderation, most things are OK.”

He continued, “Number two, think about what National Donut Day is. National Donut Day celebrates a lot of young ladies during World War I called ‘donut lassies’ who went and gave donuts to our soldiers while they were fighting to protect democracy. I’ll stand behind it.”

“Your honor,” Lauer cut in. “That was before obesity was a national epidemic in this country….if moderation works for donuts, why not with soft drinks?”

“That is exactly what we’re trying to do with soft drinks,” Bloomberg. “Instead of the big 32-ounce, get two 16 ounces if you want. But history shows, all the tests show what you’ll do is probably drink one.”

“Happy National Donut Day,” Lauer said to close the segment.

“Thank you very much,” Bloomberg replied.

Wow! That was some hard-hitting journalism from Lauer! The guy put out a question, the mayor gives his mealy-mouthed answer and Lauer says: OK. Why didn’t he ask him who the hell he thinks he is for trying to tell 6 million people they don’t know enough to make their own decisions? Why didn’t he ask Bloomin’ Idiot berg why he thinks he knows more than everyone else? This is just one more reason I never watch daytime TV. Actually I don’t watch too much network TV at all, it all stinks.

If it is “sugar” drinks that is a problem, can I then buy Diet DP in 32 oz. and larger???? Or is it hate for the soda pop industry in general as well as helping the environment by limiting the amount of CO2 released when drinking carbonated beverages??

I agree with Mr Bloomberg. If you have to carry 2 or 3 cups of soda, you are more likely to just get one. So, that being said, why is he not supporting a ban on bags or boxes that can hold more than 1 donut? People don’t buy just one donut, they usually buy a dozen.

If the convenience stores cannot sell larger than 16oz drinks in the cups, what if someone went over to the rack and bought a 2 liter in the “take home” bottle? They could then take that 2 liter bottle and drink from it while driving around. Will that next lead to police ticketing the driver for excessive quantity of a controlled substance, or having an open container in the car?

Hey New Yorkers, get a dozen box of donuts and a 2 liter of your favorite soda, and sit in front of city hall and enjoy a snack.

solution is free refills. Ask for a pitcher of soda so you can refill your own cups to save them time.

Put PE back in schools. Eliminate the ethnic studies to pay for PE. Eliminate some of the bloated bureaucracy of the school boards and managment. Get rid of the Unions and use the dues to pay for the PE teachers. Do it for the kids! But don’t take away my right to pursue happiness. You cannot legislate morality, health or my physical appearance.

I missed that this is “Single Donut Day” or “Less than 16 ounces Donut Day”. The absurdity of bloomberg is on display for the world to see. Presuming that one’s preferred junk food is superior to another’s preferred junk food is a foolish debate for bloomberg to assert. The greater issue is that such a restraint on choice and fee enterprise is tolerated.

This has noting to do with the concern for people’s health. It is about the elimination of the bulk discount. Can you imagine the increase in tax revenue due to people having to purchase 2 sodas as opposed to only one to get the same quantity? Look at the price spread between the sizes of sodas. It is minuscule. This is a money maker. What about the increased volume of trash created from this? Anyone think of that? Does anyone hold stock in the cup manufacturers?

I heard Matt giving him hell this morning. Boy, he can be relentless.

The mayor actually said that banning sugar drinks over 16 oz. FORCES a person to think about what they are doing if they order another one. He used the word forces.

It also FORCES the person to spend more money on another drink. And it also FORCES, once again, the gov’ts idea of what is healthy down the throats of supposedly free Americans.

Congrats NYC on always being in the forefront of government intruding where they don’t belong regarding food.

And the purpose of this ban is….what? Increased sales tax…straight up. Has nothing to do with keeping people healthy. Hell, buy four for all he cares. More money for the city.
