Matt Lauer Hammers Mayor Bloomberg Over Banning Large Sodas…While Supporting National Donut Day
Matt Lauer took on New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Friday over his administration’s plan to ban the sale of large soft drinks — while coming out in support of National Donut Day at the same time.
“Your administration has come out in support of National Donut Day,” Lauer said on NBC’s “Today.” “It sounds ridiculous.”
βIt doesnβt sound ridiculous, one donut is not going to hurt you,β Bloomberg, a political independent, defended. βIn moderation, most things are OK.”
He continued, “Number two, think about what National Donut Day is. National Donut Day celebrates a lot of young ladies during World War I called ‘donut lassies’ who went and gave donuts to our soldiers while they were fighting to protect democracy. Iβll stand behind it.”
βYour honor,β Lauer cut in. βThat was before obesity was a national epidemic in this country….if moderation works for donuts, why not with soft drinks?β
βThat is exactly what weβre trying to do with soft drinks,β Bloomberg. βInstead of the big 32-ounce, get two 16 ounces if you want. But history shows, all the tests show what youβll do is probably drink one.β
βHappy National Donut Day,β Lauer said to close the segment.
βThank you very much,β Bloomberg replied.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 2:46pmThere is nothing but hypocrisy by the mayor here. “We want to get people to…..” Nothing like having politicians who know what’s best for the peons of the country. Large sodas, no; doughuts, yes. He said it himself, that ‘most anything in moderation is OK for you’. Talking out of both sides of his face and he can do it without laughing!
Pure liberal hypocrisy. He should have his cadre of 6 security guards disarmed before opening his mouth again…..

Posted on June 3, 2012 at 12:47pmYour Honor,
This is stupid! Shame on you for even considering it! Pass the law and folks will still play games with it in order to get what they want! I really thought you had more class! You have people out of work, no food, under educated, etc., and you ‘dare’ worry about folks buying big drinks??!!! This is stupid! So what’s next? The length of people’s hair??!!

Posted on June 2, 2012 at 9:53pmThey must have singled out large drinks because they aren’t shared. Will quarter-pounders, double whoppers and foot long subs be next. How do they know if you consume half and put the rest in the fridge? How much of those drinks is ice? No way to regulate it. Rediculous.

Posted on June 2, 2012 at 2:51pmI’ve read comments about ‘Bloomers’ political affiliations and it seems that all posters do not agree as to what party he is a member of. Just remember this: he is a com mun ist so it doesn’t matter what party he says he’s with, he is a member of the com mun ist party and an enemy of America. Hope you N.Y’ers remember that next time you visit the polls. Unless you try to keep vermin like this from attaining political office, we are all endangered by their civil existence!

Posted on June 2, 2012 at 1:38pmWe poor ignorant citizens just don’t get it! Mr. Bloomberg, like all of his Progressive colleagues, is far more intelligent than we are. It’s all for our own good, we just aren’t smart enough to understand. We are so lucky to have people like him around to make the right choices for us!

Posted on June 2, 2012 at 10:26amWhen my kids were young I would by a large softdrink and the kids and I would share it – I couldn’t fork over another 5 bucks so all could have their own soda. This is going to cost the poor more money, or I guess, go to the store and buy the 2 liter and then go to McDonald’s for the food.

Posted on June 2, 2012 at 11:14amGo to McD’s with your 2-litre-soda-with-cups, and just buy the food-only…..They’ll go broke! The “drinks” are the huge-end of the proffit-scale for any fastfood chain. The meat-in-the-burger costs hundreds-of-times more than the “soda”-concentrate+fizz-water.

Posted on June 2, 2012 at 8:57amThe question is…would you think like this in order to develop a net worth of $22 Billion? It sure seems like it’s a pre-requisite. No wonder the Koch brothers are vilified.

Posted on June 2, 2012 at 9:53amThe Koch brothers, if in the seat of Mayor of New York would turn that city around in asap because they know how to make money unlike mental head Bloomberg who doesn’t know his behind from a hole in the wall. Surely there are huge, major problems in New York that needs to be addressed more so than what people eat! DEAR GOD!

Posted on June 2, 2012 at 8:56amIf Bloomberg really cared about obesity, he would make all restaurants serve no more than a 4 oz. piece of meat, remove butter and salt from the restaurants and make sure that all the hamburgers served had very low fat content. That, however, would kill New York’s restaurant industry and so he is being disingenuous with the soda ban. Like so many of these rules, despite all the altruism, they are made to fit a personal agenda rather then being done for true health reasons
