Shock Police Photo: Mom Buckles Up Gas Can in Car Seat, Leaves Child Unbelted

A Colorado mom is probably lucky that she only received a traffic ticket for what is shown in the photo below:

Mom Ticketed For Putting Gas Can In Baby Seat

Last week, the Colorado State Police were engaged in a “Click it or ticket” program that is meant to encourage drivers to use their seat belts.  The Denver Post reports that troopers in the town of Aurora spotted a car making an illegal turn and pulled it over. They discovered that none of the three people riding in the car was wearing a seat belt… but the gas can was belted into a child’s car seat as a toddler in a diaper sat next to it!

The incident was recorded and posted on the Colorado Department of Transportation’s Facebook page, and has sparked considerable outrage. (That also begs the question: When did local law enforcement get Facebook pages and start posting pictures from traffic stops?)

The driver was cited for three violations of the seatbelt law and having no proof of insurance.

Just days ago, The Blaze reported on a law in NJ that could cost drivers $1000 for not securing pets in moving cars. (Blaze editor Jon Seidl speculated that the woman may have seen the NJ story and assumed that the law also included PET-roleum.)

I guess this is call for another government regulation. Some people will do dumb things. You cannot regulate stupidity. Tell the cops to go after the killers and robbers. Next I wont even be able to ride in the back of my pick up without getting a ticket.
Freedom. What are we doing to ourselves. ? Yes she was stupid. So what.

the kid was safer with the gas secured than he/she would be withthe gas rolling around in back. i used to let my kids sleep in the playpen in the back of my full sized van long before there were car seats or the ignorant, intrusive nanny state. sob, they are still alive and have kids of their own. i wonder what miracle allowed that to happen. i wonder how the human race actually survived to the point where there are almost seven billion of us on the planet. we won’t survive the nanny state i am dam sure of that.

In the photo above, it appears the child is wearing his seat belt, he just put the shoulder portion behind him. I mean, it’s an odd photo and seems reversed, why not just use the normal seat belt to secure the gas can? Why the kids seat? Either way, based on the photo, that child does have his seat belt on.

All I can say is Aurora is the land of the Liberals and in no way reflects the people where I live. We would buckle the child and put the gas can in the other seat or in the trunk with a properly sealed cap. Also the can could have gone down on the floor board, but that is just me.

There were 3 people in the car. I would send my husband to get the gas can filled and I’d stay home with the baby. If I was a single mom, I’d get a friend to watch the baby, or fill the can. Either way, I wouldn’t have them BOTH in the car at the same time.

Growing up we did not have seat belts nor carriers for our babies. BUT #1 speed limits were much lower; #2 we had no intrerstates with drivers going 80-90 mph, switching lanes, talking on a phone, etc. & #3 there were only about a tenth of the number cars on the road as there are today.

I guess with all the negative reaction, no one has thought this out. You have a child that can’t be left home alone because DCYF will have you arrested, and your lawnmower needs gas to cut your lawn because the Minimum Housing Authority is threatening you with fines and property confiscation because you didn’t mow your lawn, You have a SUV so there is no trunk or pickup bed. You store that gas can as safely as possible and just in case there is a problem and you need to extradite your child quickly from a burning car, you leave the seatbelt off him… Thats what I would expect a thinking person to do… We never has seat belts when I was a kid, and we always held the gas can so it would not spill on the floor of the car. If the cop was concerned, he could have given the kid a ride home in the police car, not the mother…

Oh come on… we didn’t have car seats for the first 100 years of cars and our parents didn’t love any less. This is typical Colorado nanny state. Who the hell does the government think they are telling us how we ride in the privacy of our own car?
Makes perfect sense to secure the can to keep it from sloshing around in the car.

You can expect more of this nanny state mentality as the progressives take more and more control of every aspect or out lives. Now that they have our health care under their control, they are telling us what we must and must not eat, what kind of lunches OUR kids can eat. Just watch as they move to enlarge the unions and require all kids to eat breakfast and lunch at SEIU served school cafeterias. They would ban tobacco entirely if they didn’t get so much tax money from it.

American kids are the most over protected kids in the world, if they can survive the publicly funded abortions’ dismemberment in the wound. I don’t for a moment believe these are laws are for the protection of the kids, they are just incremental steps to absolute control of our lives.

There are no seat belt law for adults in the Live Free or Die state… The signs stating this when you enter the state say “common sense for all.” [sigh] …or it least it used to be that way. There didn’t used to be a seat belt law at all until recently.

Now… That being said, you’re supposed to exercise that common sense on your own. Would I buckle up my kid? ABSOLUTELY. If you went to the trouble to buy a gas can, use your head and buy a bungee cord to secure it. If you went to the trouble to buy a moderately expensive car seat, use your head and buy a bungee cord for a gas can.

I’ve chopped up a few cars, and the injuries/deaths from not wearing seat belts are pretty nasty. It’s not worth it. Should it be the law, though? No. No one is more motivated than YOU to put on your seat belt or your child’s seat belt – not the state or federal government. Sadly, we’ve all been taught to turn off our brains and listen to people who we’re told know best.

She cared more about her gas can, than her baby. That’s when you know gas has gotten way too expensive.
Message to Obama, drill here, drill now. High gas prices are causing mothers to abuse their children.

The story stated “The driver was cited for three violations of the “seatbelt law” and having “no proof of insurance”.
Isn’t it illegal to transport gas inside of a passenger vehicle? Was she also ticketed for that violation? Was she charged with child endangerment?

Yes the child should have been in the carseat. HOWEVER take a look at the picture, there is obviously a seat belt buckled behind the child, I am betting if we moved his leg it is over his lap. Not legal but is there. I cannot tell you how many times I buckled my kids in to boosters only to have them put the shoulder belt behind them. Other issues to take on here, how about the fumes fromt he assumed full gas can, the fact that if any spilled the carseat is now VERY flammable, The person absolutely needs to take a class and be fined for sure.
