Holder Calls Contempt Charges Against Him an ‘Impending Constitutional Crisis’

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder was back on Capitol Hill Tuesday in part to discuss the potential contempt charges threatened against him, which lawmakers say stem from the Justice Department’s lack of cooperation in the investigation of the failed federal gun-walking operation, Fast and Furious.

However, Holder now says he is willing to work with Republican lawmakers in order to avoid the charges – or as he called it, the “impending constitutional crisis.”

During the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) asked Holder for the DOJ’s (Department of Justice) stance on the recently leaked wiretap applications relating to Fast and Furious and whether his department was willing to provide additional documents. Surprisingly, the attorney general seemingly extended his hand to the GOP saying, he is prepared to make “compromises with regard to the documents that can be made available.”

“I want to make it very clear that I am offering – I myself – to sit down with the Speaker, the chairman, with you, whoever, to try and work our way through this in an attempt to avoid a constitutional crisis, and come up with ways, creative ways, in which to make this material available. But I’ve got to have a willing partner. I’ve extended my hand, and I’m waiting to hear back,” Holder said in response to a question posed by Grassley.

The response could mean that the continued pressure coming from Congressional investigators like Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) is working. Issa recently argued that the wiretap applications, which he claims were leaked from a group of “furious whistleblowers,” indicate that senior DOJ officials were aware of the tactics being used in Fast and Furious well before Holder and his department claim.

Just last week, after being asked by Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) to meet with him and other lawmakers, Holder refused to adequately answer the question.

To be fair, the attorney general only said he would “consider” providing Congressional investigators with more Fast and Furious documents so long as it doesn’t impact ongoing investigations. He also said it is rare when the DOJ releases sealed documents such as wiretap applications.

“But as I said, I am willing to consider that as a possibility to try to avoid what I think is an impending constitutional crisis,” Holder added.

In a separate signal that the GOP pressure has been increasing, Holder wouldn’t commit to a second term if Obama wins reelection.

“What my future holds, frankly, I’m just not sure,” he said, before later adding, “Some have raised concerns about whether I was tough enough. I hope people will see … [that I] stuck by my guns … .”

We assume no pun intended.

UPDATE:

In addition to Holder’s comments, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) is also gaining attention for his bold statement during the hearing. In an exchange with Holder, Cornyn told the attorney general to his face that he should resign.

“You’ve violated the public trust in my view by failing to perform the duties of your office,” Cornyn said. “So, Mr. Attorney General it is with more sorrow than with regret and anger that I would say you leave me with no alternative but to join those who call on you to resign your office. Americans deserve an attorney general who will be honest with them.”

  Constitution? What constitution? I had no Idea Holder knew any part of THAT piece of paper. Its the same old divide and conquer, but hey Holder that technique has been used many times by our military and they know it very well.   @Chief George–You are spot on. If you heard the hearing and it is surely on CSpan if you haven’t. He (Holder or as Huckabee calls him Withholder) got reamed severely even before Senator Cornyn got to him. It was wonderful to behold. Aside from Senator Grassley,Senators Graham and Sessions reamed but my Senator from Texas, Senator Cornyn topped it all off when he told him he should resign. Yet the Democrats gave him a pass. This hearing was about the “leaks” and even Feinstein was with Holder as to choosing two prosecutors rather than an outside special prosecutor. And that arrogance Holder has stayed in place. It was infuriating yet after remembering President Nixon arrogance is what brought his end. So my thinking is this is good news. He tried controlling them with his “magnanimous” offer about Fast and Furious. My bet is Holder is the key to Obama done, kaputtzie, bye bye. He should be fired and go straight to jail for obstruction of justice with our House of Reps. Everyone should watch this hearing.

It’s really embarrassing to see evil people like Obama and Holder pretend like they have a clue, or pretend like they care about traditional America.

It’s not that these two bottom feeders don’t know what they’re doing. It’s more there evil intentions that really irks me. A lot of people will never understand and will come away with the false belief that Obama and Holder just were “in over their heads”, when in fact the evil being perpetrated was planned years in advance. Constitutional crisis? Not hardly. I think the Constitution will survive requiring a slippery Attorney General to answer questions and present paperwork to Congress.

If Obama loses in November I’d like to see a full investigation of Holder and other officials to see if criminal charges are warranted. I expect there would be several indictments.

If Holder were an honest man, and only wanted what is best for America he would have no troble in releasing anything that Congress calls for.Holder and Obama are both arrogant people that have to put down other people to make themselves look and feel good.
Obama and Holder really think the American people are stupid and that they being in a powerfull position in the government can do what ever they like and we the people who are stupid have to agree with them if for nothing else that they are in power.
To me it seems cut and dry that Holder and Obama are guilty of running guns. The sad thing is if they get away with this what is next on there agenda.
These guys are trying their best to destroy America as we know it. They must be stopped.

  If Turd Bucket, Obama, gets re-elected then the American public is far dumber than first thought and doesn’t deserve to survive. That mean that I spent 21 years of my life in the USMC defending and protecting idiots! I guess almost half of my life I would have wasted.

  When the GOP gets all three branches in January, I have the first bill that should be passed:
  Begin the deporting of liberals to Europe since they want out country to be that f’d up as they are and we will keep the illegal hispanics. At least the illegals will work and give some type of contribution to our nation while liberals have yet to provided me with a purpose for their existance. Receiving welfare and protesting things they don’t understand aren’t good enough reasons to stay.
  Oh, and it would be nice if even one of them would serve our country once in a while.

The biggest “impending constitutional crisis” facing America at the moment is the possibility of obama being re-elected, and Holder retaining his position.

If we are to survive as a nation, obama and his criminal cabal must be removed from power.
