14-Year-Old Shoots Armed Intruder While Babysitting His Younger Siblings in Phoenix

(The Blaze/AP) — A 14-year-old boy shot and nearly killed an intruder who broke into his Phoenix home and pulled a gun on him while he was watching his three younger siblings, police said Saturday.
The teen and his siblings, ages 8, 10 and 12, were at home alone when a woman rang the doorbell on Friday. A common enough occurrence, the boy still chose not to open the door because he didn’t recognize the woman.
Quickly escalating into a far more dangerous situation, the 14-year-old rushed his siblings upstairs after he heard a loud bang on the door, grabbing his father’s handgun on the way.
When he got to the top of the stairs, he saw an armed man break through the front door and point a gun at him.
Acting swiftly, he reportedly shot the 37-year-old man, who was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition to undergo surgery. However, he is expected to survive and will be booked into jail within the week on counts of aggravated assault and burglary, police Officer James Holmes said.
The suspect did not get a shot off, according to police. He also declined to release his name until he is booked into jail.

While the woman who rang the doorbell got away, Holmes hailed the teen’s actions, and his parents for teaching the children to never open the door to strangers.
“The police and indeed our community does not ever want to see a situation where a teenager of that age has to take a weapon to protect his family … but this young man did exactly what he should have done,” he said. “I’m not sure he gave full thought about what he had to do. He just acted.”
He said the family, whose names were not released, is declining to speak to reporters about the ordeal, saying that they “are all pretty traumatized.”
“The dad was pretty much out of his mind with distress, officers couldn’t even talk to him,” Holmes said. “It’s going to take them a while to recover mentally.”
He said police don’t yet know what the suspect’s intentions were and that will be one of the first questions they ask him when he is well enough to talk.
“This was mid-block in a neighborhood, at 4:30 in the afternoon in summertime and children are there,” he said. “They just took a heck of a gamble for this particular house, and we’ve got to try to figure out why.”
Holmes added that the family is lucky that the teen acted so swiftly and effectively.
“As ugly as this is, and as much as this family is going through, we don’t have injured children on our hands,” he said.

Why do you automatically assume that the 14 yo was a crack shot due to steady nerves? I’ll wager it’s because he’s been out repeatedly to the range in ANTICIPATION of just such an attack. Now, you might wonder why Dad would train a 14 yo to repel a home invasion where lethal force is EXPECTED?
Answer that question correctly, my fine desert friend, and you’ll be on your way to solving this mystery. Things don’t normally happen on chance. Find out why this home was chosen over ALL the other homes in the neighborhood and you’ll be on the right trail. If you had the power to do so, the first thing to look at would be the father’s profession, bank transactions, the car he drives, where they vacation, family connections, etc., etc. I’d immediately toss out any assumptions made by the author of this article. Peel that onion back and expect the unexpected. Ask basic questions like “What happened to Mom?”
Maybe you discover an oddity like a Russian surname in the SW desert? Oh, if I saw that I’d redouble those inquiries into accounts before the trail goes cold, as in gone to old Mexico without a trace!
And for the sake of all that’s holy, please don’t ask the DoJ for help. They’re all out walking their resumes around in anticipation of the two rulings by the SCOTUS this week. Posted on June 23, 2012 at 8:04pmI shot a steel barrel full of water with a load of 12 gauge #7 birdshot at 10 feet and it made a golfball size hole in the side. I would think at short range birdshot would be very effective and less likey to pass through walls and harm the neighbors.

No. 8 birdshot will be very effective at up to 50 feet, but will not overpenetrate (i.e. go thru the neighbor’s house walls). There’s also a lot more pellets, although they’re much smaller.

Remember, you want to put the intruder out of action and not the urn with your grandfathers ashes in it or any family members that might be in his general vicinity. Buckshot can’t be controlled in close proximity.
A 9mm semi-automatic handgun will do the trick. Or, if you’re afraid of the jamming that might occur with the clip, anything from a .38 revolver to a .357 magnum will do the trick. Two rounds to the chest will put 99% of people out of commission instantly.
Then all you’ll have to do is clean up the blood and your stuff doesn’t get too messed up (except carpeting)
However, the psychological effect of the mere sound of a pump-action shotgun just being chambered is not to be ignored. Wow! It will freeze anybody in their tracks.
I’m on the fence with this one…

I have bought all 4 of my grandsons 1 each and they are shooting with adult supervision. At boyscout camp my 3 sons at age 8 and 9 outshot 15 year olds. Thats peobably where this 14 yr old learned and I’m sure his dad took him hunting. Good thing this wasn’t in D.C. or NYC – only the police, thugs and bodyguards can have a gun and this would have been a completly different story..

This is an interesting article that tells the flip side, It says, “According to the CDC, the rate of firearm deaths among children under age 15 is almost 12 times higher in the United States than in 25 other industrialized countries combined. American children are 16 times more likely to be murdered with a gun, 11 times more likely to commit suicide with a gun, and nine times more likely to die in a firearm accident than children in these other countries.”
It further says, “When researchers studied the 30,000 accidental gun deaths of Americans of all ages that occurred between 1979-1997, they found that preschoolers aged 0-4 were 17 times more likely to die from a gun accident in the 4 states with the most guns versus the 4 states with the least guns. Likewise, school kids aged 5-14 were over 13 times more at risk of accidental firearm death in the states with high gun ownership rates. The findings indicate that gun availability is associated with accidental death by shooting.”

Second, I can see the libs complaining about a 14 year old having access to a loaded gun with no trigger lock, but remember this is Texas. It may get a little press for humor sake, but in the end that’s all it will get. Now in another state, especially one like NY, that would be a totally different story. The kid would probably be sitting in juvie on murder charges. His sibling would be in state custody and the parents would be charged with child neglect and endangerment.
Third, while I have several handguns in the house, I have a couple of 20ga shotguns for primary defense. I chose 20ga over 12ga because of my wife’s ability to handle the gun. At the range that would exist in a house 12 ga or 20 ga it won’t matter, they’re still dead.
As to load, one might consider mixing the rounds. First round shot to stop and hopefully kill. Second round slug just to make sure. Rinse and repeat. I have an extended magazine on my two 20 ga’s, so I can handle more than the standard three rounds.

The general idea is to actually put holes in people. Bird shot puts very shallow holes in people. Buckshot hits vital organs. Use buckshot.

Like the people who think bird shot will stop a human, you need to learn something about guns. Too bad I can’t post photos of people with bird shot wounds that were up and mobile when the photos were taken. Vital organs are well protected by human anatomy. This question is a settled issue among those who know the facts. Bird shot is for birds. Humans are not birds.

The first thing a kid does when you hide something is look for it. You remove the mystery and you remove the threat. Responsible gun owners (the majority) teach their kids the rules of handguns. They are not toys, they are tools. You have a kid shoot a real gun when they are young and they won’t go anywhere near it. Accidents happen when you try and hide the gun from the kid. My dad is a life member of the NRA, I was shooting before I was walking, we always had a half dozen or more guns in the house loaded and ready to go and never once did I “play” with his guns, because I knew what they could do. I was bullied most of the time I was in school (60′s-70′s), I was chased home almost every day and these guys made my life hell, but not one time did the thought come into my head, to take one of my dads guns and go after those guys. Today its all the rage, kids have no respect for guns or people and its because of whiny liberals like you who have no respect…

the military considers a child old enough to stay by himselfat the age of 10 and old enough to watch younger siblings at the age of 12. Since there were 3 children over the age of 10, only the 8 year old was “being watched” and he could have been watched by 2 of the 3 remaining children.
As to the “intent” of the man? He had a gun. I’d say his intent was not good. My 13 year old is a really good shot, though I don’t know about under stress.

That statement in itself is the very center of this argument against your assertions. Liberalism/progressivism has destroyed the basis of many American families and the responsibilities of each family member. The same Liberalism/progressivism ideals are actually the lack of ideals that promote people to strike out against what is considered right and moral….and to believe into nothingness. Beyond what was considered right and moral that they scream against, it is replaced with no other actual goals. Atheism is believe in nothingness beyond one’s life existence…let’s live for today and not be bothered with how to pay for it tomorrow. Or, even WHY to pay for it tomorrow.
This teenager at least had the sense, likely because of his family’s teachings, to secure his siblings, then stand up to the intruder or potential intruders. As the story states, the unknown female fled the scene and is still at large. I know that I am assuming to a degree, but from what we know so far to be fact, it brings one to conclude that this teenager was taught right and wrong, as well as gun safety, and the ability to acquire a target and hit it. He also did so with only one shot.

I grew up in the South and went shooting and hunting quite often. In fact, by high school a group of us used to pack our shotguns, ammo, and hunting cloths in our cars and go to school. When it was out, we met in one place for a long afternoon of dove, or quail hunting. Before the age of fourteen my Dad had helped me become quite a crack shot with pistols and revolvers. Dad, having grown up in the Depression, hated wasting ammunition and the first shot had better be “the” shot that got the job done. Fortunately, I never had to experience what this teenager went through. But, my teenage years were in an entirely different time in this country. I hope that The Blaze follows this story much like it has with the father facing his daughter’s molester. Still, I expect the likes of many of the trolls here to castigate the father for teaching his son gun safety, and shooting, if that is what actually happened. Furthermore, I expect the same people to rant against the teenager having access to the weapon. Still, I wonder what would have happened had he not had access? I also hope The Blaze follows up with information on the perpetrator so that we can discover his background. Was it simply a burglary, or was there something else more odious to come. As far as I am concerned, once he pointed his weapon at these children he became fair game. God bless this family, and I hope they can recover from this trauma.

Posted on June 24, 2012 at 12:11pmKeep in mind the 14 yr. old a) had the presence of mind NOT to open the door, b) shooed his younger siblings upstairs to safety, c) fetched his father’s gun from wherever it was, d) removed the safety, e) faced a gun pointed directly at him by a menacing stranger, and e) managed to shoot FIRST – accurately enough to stop the intruder in his tracks! That young man is a hero in my view – as is his father who I would guess trained his son well. I’m rather touched by the protection he provided to his younger siblings – despite any normal sibling rivalry. His brotherly LOVE for them kicked right in! My heart goes out to this family and my new hero the unnamed son. Hope to see them on the news.

In a home situation about the furthest you would be from an attacker would be 20 feet and it would probably be about half that, and a 12 gauge with birdshot WOULD put a hole in a man about the soze of a softball. Don’t believe me? Fill up a gallon milk jug with water and stand about 15 feet away and shoot it. No more milk jug.

I’m a U.S.Army Vet and used to do repos for a certain group back in the day,and my experience is;in close quarters birdshot works just fine.However i can hit you at 25-30 ft. with a sawed off .410 or 12ga. using my own hand packed non-lethal rounds of tightly packed triple 0 steelwool wad,and successfully knock you down and put you out at the same time,without killing you. When you wake up,you’ll be in pain and duct taped securely for delivery to the nearest law enforcement agency. I’m glad the kid was successful and no one but the perp was shot. Good Shootin Kiddo keep up the good work.!!

He could strike a match with a 9 mm when he was only 10. To not train your kids to protect themselves is wrong….there are too many criminals out there…they go to jail and in six months are back on the street to commit another crime. Good for this kid…his family should be proud.

You’ve made an argument based on statistics which I appreciate, although you were referring to the deaths of young children, not teenagers which was the point of my post (although you are correct that young children die from firearms far more in the US than other countries).
But as far as children you’re right, many more die from swimming accidents than guns, so you recommend that our country address that first. Sounds good. Who addresses that though? Nobody right? Blame the parents and that’s the end of the story? Or do you want government intervention and the cost associated with that? What do you recommend?
But I’m still wondering why, “According to the CDC, the rate of firearm deaths among children under age 15 is almost 12 times higher in the United States than in 25 other industrialized countries combined. American children are 16 times more likely to be murdered with a gun,” and that “preschoolers aged 0-4 were 17 times more likely to die from a gun accident in the 4 states with the most guns versus the 4 states with the least guns.”
That’s because of liberals? Somebody said that. Seriously is it because of liberals that the US has such high rates of death from guns? Or is it something else?

Why do keep ignoring the evidence that I have given you that clearly shows the rates of ALL VIOLENT CRIMES, (that includes murders by guns btw) have decreased every year for at least the last five years,…….even while the number of new, first time gun permits and gun purchases has been increasing exponentially?
Just this past year alone JZS, those rates decreased by 4%.
This has baffled mental health experts, because in stressful times like these, violent crimes usually increase.
I know you have seen the articles I have linked to previously in my other replies to you. Would you like me to dig them up and re-post them for you?
Why do you ignore the indisputable facts and truths?

Your right about me comparing two different stats. Although I didn’t mean to imply more children 19 and under die from pools than guns, that is how it came out. Sorry for the confusion.
My sarcastic point about taking action on swimming pools also seems to be poorly expressed seeing it was not understandable. My point was less that half of 1/10 of one percent of children under 19 die from firearms yearly and you are implying something should be done about it in terms of regulations while ignoring things like car crashes.
I am also curious if you would support new regulations on those recieving government assistance if fraud in the program was .0062% or higher, as you do firearms. I mean, if .0062% is enough for new regulations on firearms i don’t see why that shouldn’t pertain to welfare as well.
Lastly, if this was your family in the story, would you want your 14 year old son to have access to a firear, yes or no?

I’m glad those kids weren’t living in my state Maryland. It would have been illegal for that handgun to be unlocked and accesible to children under 16 years old. All handguns must have a child safety lock if kids are present, and parents are not in the area. Thank God for Arizona’s gun laws. Last time I checked, I ain’t have to hide or lock my electric chainsaw, nail gun, hot iron, or kitchen knife from my kids. I just had to educate them, and teach them responsibility. Common sense is not so common anymore.

You know, if someone is perceived as a threat to my life, or that of my family, I wouldn’t think twice about stopping him/her, permanently. Anyway, great job by the young man, but I’ll be looking forward to the background story because the chances of a man and a woman breaking into a random house, armed, knowing that someone is home, are astronomical. I suspect this either involves a custody dispute and/or drugs. Since there was a loaded handgun and the kid knew how to use it kind of makes me think that it’s a custody thing since a woman was with the “muscle.

Blazedbanned is angry & he has a right to be angry. It is just not confirmation bias that of the perpetrator is white they are identified almost immediately and any other race is not mentioned in many cases. That type of reporting is taught a journalism school and reinforced in the newsroom.

Don’t want to shoot a person, however, if one broke into my house, I wouldn’t hesitate at all.
I’ve hunted deer for years and always dropped them with one shot. That really burned the heck out of the rest of the family that I was so darn accurate and they had to shoot 3-4 times.

It was an old gun with a long, rusty barrel. He bought me a gun cleaning kit and showed me how to strip it down and thoroughly clean it, and he taught me and my siblings all about gun safety. As I grew up I realized that it was little more than a varmint gun. Vermin, for those of you up north. Good for shooting the field mice who ate Grandmas garden, and not much more. It was a single-shot, after all. No good at all if you’re confronted in your home by an armed assailant with a modern, semi-automatic pistol or rifle. But he did instill in me a lifelong love of firearms.

The gun was accessible by children not evidently did not have a saffety lock.
Yet, mysteriously, the weapon provided the precise utility intended for it.
Sounds like private responsibility and education trumps government meddling here.

It’s a bigger target. When you’re under duress from an armed assailant, you’re not trying to kill him. You just want to make sure you incapacitate him so that he can’t kill you. If you happen to kill him in the process, then that’s a bonus.
