‘We Cannot and Will Not Participate’: Black Caucus to Stage Walkout During House Vote on Eric Holder Contempt Charges

Congressional Black Caucus Will Stage Walkout During House Vote on Eric Holder Contempt Charges in Fast and Furious

According to a letter floating around in Democratic circles, the Congressional Black Caucus will stage a walkout during today’s House vote on contempt charges for Attorney General Eric Holder in a symbolic display of their disapproval for the measure, The Hill Reports.

House Republicans refused to back down and call off contempt proceedings as they, and even some Democrats, claim Holder has failed to comply with a congressional subpoena regarding documents related to the the flawed gunrunning operation “Fast and Furious.”

“We adamantly oppose this partisan attack and refuse to participate in any vote that would tarnish the image of Congress or of an attorney general who has done nothing but work tirelessly to protect the rights of the American people,” the Black Caucus members wrote in the letter, later acquired by various news outlets. “We cannot and will not participate in a vote to hold the Attorney General in contempt.”

More from The Hill:

The CBC is scheduled to meet at 10 a.m. on Thursday to discuss the details of the walkout and is planning to circulate a letter to House Democrats requesting that they join them on the Capitol steps for a press conference during the contempt vote.

The move comes less than 24 hours before the House plans to vote for the first time in history to hold a sitting attorney general in contempt of Congress for not complying with a congressional subpoena. Holder is the first black attorney general in U.S. history.

The walkout is reminiscent of a similar move made by Republicans in 2008 during a Democratic-led vote on whether to hold two senior staffers in President George W. Bush’s administration in contempt of Congress.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) — then the minority leader — led the walkout with Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) following closely behind him. Issa, the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, is the sponsor of the contempt resolution against Holder.

Business Insider reports the letter was also sent to the Hispanic, Asian and Progressive Caucuses, which apparently urged members to join the Black Caucus in the walkout and a press conference on the steps of the Capitol Building.

There will be two hours and 20 minutes allotted for debate during today’s hearing before the full House votes on criminal and civil contempt charges against Holder.

LMFAO! You know, someone should tell them that walking out does not solve the issue. Instead of voting against it and standing on their principles, the are choosing not to vote and not be head as people who voted to protect a criminal in their own midst.

They are cooping out and trying to make it look like they a standing up to injustice. Standing up for “injustice” is putting your necks and reputation on the line because you know it is the right thing to do.

The issue is, they know that there was wrong doing by the DOJ. That the vote will go through regardless of their attempts to oppose it. They will loose their seats if they vote against the contempt charges as this will give ammo for the Tea Party and Conservatives to defeat them come November. Remember, the House serves 2 year terms. They are up for re-election this year. Where is your principles Progressives? Where is your integrity? You blame Republicans of Lies, but your no better. Progressives are on both sides. God Help us if Romney doesn’t change his Progressive ways.

Since we have a black President, our Country has been divided more than anytime in our history, that I can recall. I grew up in a major city, and was part of an integrated community, and we never had this crap. What the hell has happened? Since when do the blacks have this sensitive, and elitist attitude? They’re stuck in a no-win situation, because they can’t go against the Party and vote against Holder, but they also can’t vote for Holder without looking like a bunch of racists who place politics over justice for the 300+ Mexicans who were killed by F&F. Since racism is the only card they ever have to play most of the time, they can’t afford to be on the receiving end of those charges. So playing the race card, taking the role of the victim again and abstaining is their only way out of the dilema.

The CBC is more interested in a black man being the Attorney General regardless of anything else. The fact that the Department of Justice in now a corrupt organization in need of a housecleaning from the Attorney General down to the newest recruit class that would make one of Joseph Stalin’s purges look like a bunch of Sunday School Kindergartners singing Jesus loves me is irrelevant to them . The rule of law is at stake in this mess , if the vote fails or is basically along party lines the rule of law will become a thing of the past in this country .That is what is really at stake literally the honest rule of law where everyone can have their day in court if this fails we will be as a nation on the road to totalitarian dictatorship .

After so many staged walk outs on controversial matters and running away from voting under this president, there needs to be a caveat that says, you forfeit your vote, you forfeit your seat. Not voting is essentially stonewalling the process, because they fear the outcome. You have a job to do, to represent your people, those who voted for you to be in that seat. You don’t have a right to simply walk away and do nothing at all. And this is not an acceptable means of displaying solidarity or otherwise…

As Government officials, part of your duty is to hold yourself and others accountable for the things you do while in office, as it relates to serving the general public. It goes back to what I look for in a leader: Competence and a good conscience. If you don’t possess a good conscience to do the right thing, you have no right to call yourself a leader or otherwise.
