Do You Miss These Old-School Tech Sounds of Yesteryear? Listen to the Audio

Do you remember what a floppy disc was? No really, do you remember what it sounded like to put the plastic disc into your tower computer sitting on the floor next to your desk and listen as it processed?

These and other sounds are at risk for being lost and never heard again. That is, unless the Museum of Endangered Sounds has anything to say about it.

Business Insider, picking up on this trend, put together some of its favorite, old-school sounds. A few of them are embedded below, but check out their whole post to hear all 11 sounds here.

LOL. It’s not nostalgia for me. I STILL have an old system that runs Win 98 and has a fully operational floppy drive. You may wonder why I still have this? Because I play a midi capable electronic piano (Yamaha Clavinova CLP-560) that I’ve had now for about 20 years and I have a piano software that is fantastic but is old and only compatible with 95-98. It’s timeless study, learning and editing software from a company that is no longer in business (the company was JUMP music). You can’t buy this software today except for maybe on Ebay but it’s still great software that I still use to this day.

I remember with a great deal of fondness the whir of the disc in the disc drive of the computer when I was in high school. We thought we were so advanced back then, dashing down the halls with those discs, the size of dinner plates!(lol) As long as you heard a whir, all was right in computer-land. But if you heard a grinding…well, let’s just say you were going to have to run down to the school store and shell ou a couple of bucks for a new one, because the drive just ate your disc.
I actually miss the snickity-snick of rotary phones. I’m actually hunting eBay to find a decent vintage one that still works. I, too, wish I didn’t need a cell phone but because I’m terminal it’s kinda necessary.
I do NOT miss the nasty shrill of dial up! Ugh! That sound can be lost forever, for all I care!

TV stations used to sign off around midnight.. they had different things, High Flight, that Indian pattern, and then the white noise… disappointing when you wanted to stay up and watch tv.
Of course there were only 3 broadcast stations, maybe 2 if you didn’t have a strong antenna.

  We had 5 stations, ABC, NBC, CBS, plus PBS, and an independent station that is now Fox. What ever happened to UPN?

  Shotgun shell being loaded is not old school. I plan on having my daughters boyfriends hear that sound often. She’s only 4 but my pump action Winchester 1300 Defender will ready. Oh Yaa!

Ahh, yesteryear. I remember “party lines” on the telephone. Your neighbour shared the same telephone line with you and maybe even a third user.
“Hey Mable, could you get off the line, I have to call the doctor”. I miss the 1950′s

  We still had a party line in the 70′s. The school I went to in the 60′s didn’t even have indoor plumbing. (a rural one-room school.)

I remember one of the first LIVE TALK AROUND THE GLOBE social internet programs, which also had text, was used around 1998. I spoke with a woman from Adelaide Australia. I don’t remember the name of the program, but it started with the letter “M” and was a huge font M with purple coloring and sort of had that batman look with a circle around it. The program had a ton of unique sounds. Sounds when it was connecting when using your dial up. Sounds when someone was connecting with a live person. Ringing tones when calls came in and out. I’ll never forget that experience. Really cool!

  Yep – here in NC I am still on dial-up at home; and the Windows 98 OS with my Gateway tower…which is why I have to take care of computer stuff while at work, or on my laptop at a wi-fi hotspot!

  I live in Alabama. I assure you they are more technologically advanced then a lot of the norther states. I’ve from Pennsylvania and I travel a lot. I do know this to be true.

For non-”tech” sounds, nothing beats the roar of a twin prop DC8 taxiing for takeoff, or flying overhead at an altitude of about 3000 feet.

The really nostalgic sounds were the ones of Paul Krugman talking about how to bring back the economy. Those date back to the 1930′s. Don’t miss those!

  I really glad those days are gone. Gone are the days of slow expensive modems and bad telephone lines. I even got ride of Windows altogether and went completely Apple products and I’m a much better person for it now that I don’t have to be concerned about product compatibility and reliability.

This reminds me of something a little boy said at a restaurant.
He told his Mother, that the real reason he loved coming to that particular restaurant, wasn’t because he liked their food so much. He said, he loves the constant sound of the clanking dishes. He said, it made eating there, so much fun.

It’s amazing, how simple sounds can comfort us, can bring back nice memories, and can make our lives so much more enjoyable.

A Beckbots yesteryear sound is one of a caveman chisling a rock to form a stone wheel and rubbing two sticks together to make fire because most of them are so old and irrelevant..LOL!
