Australian Authorities Hunting for Great White Shark That Bit Surfer in ‘Half’

A search-and-destroy mission is underway for a great white shark that killed a surfer along Australia’s west coast on Saturday, biting his body in half.
Benjamin Linden, 24, was surfing about 100 yards offshore when he was attacked by a “massive” great white around 9 a.m. local time, the Australian reported.
His remains have not yet been recovered.
Jet skier Matt Holmes witnessed the attack and said he tried to rescue Linden. He described seeing a “massive, massive white shark circling the body” and “blood everywhere.”
“By the time I got out there half of him had been taken and the shark was circling,” Holmes said, according to the Herald Sun.
“I tried to lean off the side and pull him on the back, but as I did that, the shark came back and nudged the jet ski to try to knock me off,” he said. “When I came back the second time, he took the rest of him. I just thought about his family and if he had kids. I just wanted to get him to shore. I gave it everything I had.”
The Associated Press has more video, and interviews with surfers who frequent the area:
Tony Cappelluti, spokesman for the shark response unit for Australia’s Fisheries Department, said a boat is grid-searching the area with orders to capture and kill the shark, according to the Australian.
“At this point in time we’re basically looking for the shark, and if there are any remains found we’ll involve the police,” he said.
He admitted the likelihood of capturing the shark, last seen in deeper water, was slim.

Linden's girlfriend, Alana Noakes, notified friends and family of the tragedy on Facebook. (Image source: Herald Sun)
Linden’s girlfriend, Alana Noakes, notified friends and family of the tragedy in a Facebook post.
“I’m devastated to let everyone know that my beautiful man, Ben Linden, was the surfer who was taken by the shark at Wedge Point this morning,” she wrote. “He was the love of my life, my best friend, my rock and my soulmate.”
According to the Australian, other surfers had noticed a large shark in the vicinity in the previous few days, nicknaming it “Brutus” because of its size.
Linden is the fifth person to be killed off Western Australia’s southwest coast in less than a year.

Hey, maybe after these geniuses are done, they can track down the two deer that bolted out in front of me on my way to work last Friday. I don’t care if it’s a shark or a bear or a family dog, once they go after humans then their done. That’s our privledge as the alpha predator on this planet. Now if that shark had taken a small bite and realized it was a bony human and not a fatty seal and then swam away, I’d agree leave it alone. Good day.

But if you hunt that shark to eat it well that’s a different story…Funny how people feel the shark should be hunted down and destroyed because of this. You know the risk when you inter the water,if you don’t want to take that risk stay out of the water jellyfish, dogs, and many other animals kill humans all the time should we kill them also? Liberals destroy people lives everyday should we hunt them down also…..Wait maybe you guys have a point, let the hunting start now.

So the shark should be killed for doing what a shark does? The great white is an apex predator. When you enter the ocean, you’re entering its world and you become part of the food chain. It is a risk that some are willing to take. That is the code of the ocean. Those who spend a considerable amount of at sea understand this.

What should we do? Kill off all of the apex predators so that surfers can be safe? Do you realize how that would destroy the balance of the ecosystem and how that would kill the fishing industry? Should we put up shark nets along all of our beaches so that swimmers can be safe? Do you realize that shark nets kill everything that gets caught in them? What do you think should be done? Posted on July 15, 2012 at 10:10pm@TotallyWrong(Domestic)… God did give man dominion over animals – at the price of common sense and responsibility. Man is to use animals, but in a humane and efficient manner. He is also to use his (also God-given) common sense and stay away from wild animals that he knows to be dangerous. Read that again – KNOWS to be dangerous. The article reads that this shark had been seen in the area for DAYS. And guys still go surfing? And – uh, just maybe I’m insensitive – ISN’T FLIPPIN’ AUSTRALIA KNOWN AS THE HOME OF THE GREAT WHITE SHARK? OMG these stories are clearly to be filed under “Too Stupid to Live”. Here’s another good ‘un – that “Soul Surfer” girl in Hawaii. She KNEW that sharks live in the ocean and have been known to attack humans. Still goes surfing. Defies the odds and gets damn arm bitten off by – a shark. Defies the odds again and survives. Now? SURFING AGAIN. When another shark takes the other arm or cuts her clean – or rather raggedly – in-two, we will again hear cries to hunt down this vicious predator. You f’n idiots – shut it, don’t even try to defend this undeniable, empirical proof of natural selection. Prey that avoids a predator survives. Prey that is less cautious still might survive. But prey that jumps right in there WITH the predator even knowing that it is there? Really, people? REALLY?

I don’t speak for God, but I would imagine “man having dominion over the fish”, meant the act of fishing to eat the creatures of the sea…so we would survive. I don’t read into that that we were to take over the oceans and dictate to the sharks how to behave.

Natural selection will reduce our genetic footprint at any given time if we lack sufficient fitness for that moment. Brutality doesn’t even enter into the food chain narritive, unless you’re human (as observer, participant, or victim). Living organisms eat to survive; which ones eat and which ones get eaten are functions of location in the food chain. It’s always a good thing to know where you are, and prepare accordingly.

There are less than 20 shark attack DEATHS per year, in the entire world, but the media makes a huge deal out of it.
They use these types of tragic stories, to draw our attention away from what’s really killing us. They know, that if we are informed of the real dangers, citizens would not go out as often, to shop, eat, and drink. They want the consumers to keep spending money.
The media gives citizens a false sense of security, by concealing the truth.
The media ignores all the thousands of deaths per year from murders, the FLU, and drunk drivers.
There are approximately 12,000 murders per year in the U.S.
FLU kills approximately 36,000 per year in the U.S.
Drunk drivers kill approximately 11,000 per year in the U.S.
The ocean is much safer, than the sidewalk in front of your home.

But is there real evidence that once a shark preys on a human, that that individual shark then see humans as a prey species? Is there any evidence that humans aren’t a prey species anyway, and that a shark’s doing what comes naturally, makes any difference at all? I guess it may be worthy to establish a human safe perimeter by killing a particular shark, but is there any evidence that this makes any difference to other sharks? Truly I don’t know but I think these are worthy questions. What is the point of hunting down a particular shark? It maybe a very worthy mission, but I just don’t know.
