6 Dead After Bus Carrying Young Israeli Tourists Explodes in Bulgaria

SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) — A bomb exploded on a bus carrying Israeli youth in a Bulgarian resort Wednesday, killing at least six people and wounding 32, officials said. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called it “an Iranian terror attack” and promised a tough response.

The explosion took place in the Black Sea city of Burgas, some 400 kilometers (250 miles) east of the capital, Sofia. TV images showed smoke billowing from the scene – a parking lot at the local airport where the Israeli tourists had landed shortly before the blast. Several buses and cars were on fire near the shell of the exploded vehicle.

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, after being briefed by his Bulgarian counterpart, said the explosion was caused by a bomb placed on the bus. He said seven people died, but by Wednesday night the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry had placed the death toll at six and the number of wounded at 32 people.

No group immediately claimed responsibility. But Israelis often have been targeted outside their country, and Wednesday’s attack coincided with the 18th anniversary of the bombing of a Jewish community center in Argentina that killed 85 people.

Israel suspects archrival Iran of being behind several of those assaults. The two nations have long been in dispute over the nature of Iran’s nuclear program. Israel has warned it will use military force to curb Iran’s program if it must because it believes Tehran wants atomic weapons – a charge Iranian officials deny.

The Israeli premier noted that Wednesday’s attack followed similar attacks or attempted attacks in India, Georgia, Thailand and Kenya and Cyprus in recent months. He said that once again, “all signs point to Iran,” though he did not offer any evidence to back up the claim.

“This is an Iranian terror attack that is spreading across the world,” Netanyahu said. “Israel will react strongly to Iran’s terror.”

The White House, which has preferred to pursue sanctions and diplomatic pressure against Iran in the nuclear dispute, also strongly condemned the attack, with President Barack Obama calling it “barbaric.” British Foreign Secretary William Hague also condemned the attack and expressed condolences to the families of the victims.

Tehran did not immediately issue any comment.

Bulgaria, a majority Orthodox Christian country of 7.3 million that borders Greece and Turkey, is a favorite tourist destination for Israelis. In recent years, Burgas has become popular as an inexpensive haven for groups of Israeli teenagers taking trips after finishing high school and before their military service.

Lieberman said the bus was transporting tourists who had arrived in a charter flight from Israel. There were 154 people on the flight.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Jonathan Rosenzweig said the flight was coming from Tel Aviv and landed at 4:45 p.m. He said the blast took place about 40 minutes later. The tourists were apparently boarding the buses to go to their hotels.

Witness Gal Malka told Israel’s Channel 2 TV that she saw someone board the bus just before it exploded. Malka, who was lightly wounded, said the bus was full of Israeli teenagers. “We were at the entrance of the bus and in a few seconds we heard a huge boom,” she said.

The Burgas airport was closed and traffic redirected. In Sofia, meanwhile, Mayor Yordanka Fandakova ordered a stronger police presence at all public places linked to the Jewish community. There are some 5,000 Jews in Bulgaria and most live in the capital.

Iran, which insists its nuclear program is peaceful, has in the past accused Israel of being behind deadly attacks on Iranian nuclear scientists.

Israel has not admitted a role in those strikes, but it and others have accused Iran of reprisal missions, including a February bombing in New Delhi that wounded an Israeli diplomat’s wife and the discovery of a cache of explosives in Bangkok that Thai officials claim was linked to a plot to target Israeli diplomats. Iran has denied involvement.

In Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku, security officials in March announced the arrest of 22 suspects allegedly hired by Iran for terrorist attacks against the U.S. and Israeli embassies and other Western-linked sites.

Wednesday’s attack also coincided with the 18th anniversary of the bombing of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people. An Argentinian magistrate has concluded Iran was behind that attack.

Israeli officials also have long feared that the Iranian-backed Hezbollah guerrilla group would try to attack Israelis abroad. Hezbollah has accused Israel of assassinating a top leader in Damascus in 2008 and vowed vengeance. Israel has never admitted involvement in the death.

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon on Israel’s Channel 2 TV said there was no advance intelligence on an attack in Bulgaria.

But counterterrorism expert Boaz Ganor said Iran and Hezbollah were the most likely culprits. He told The Associated Press that all the indications pointed toward them. He also cited the arrest of a Hezbollah operative in Cyprus in recent days who was suspected of preparing a similar attack.

“This is probably a parallel operation and likely not the last in a series,” he said. “All this looks like Hezbollah, Iran or a combination of the two.”

      I find it interesting everything is pointing at Iran. I mean what evidence points at Iran 5 mins after a bombing? I understand we are not privy to this information and the Israelis are good at intel but this seems about bit quick.

      As for the Saudi’s they are never blamed for anything. A majority of the 911 hijackers were Saudi.

      If Iran did it, let Israel beat the crap out of them. We need to bring our troops home. This is not our fight. I support Israel diplomatically and military wise if they are attacked but starting world war 3 over this seems absurd. Its not just Iran. China, Russia, India, and many others that have “real” nuclear weapons have a vested interest in Iran and their oil supply. Would we like someone invading Canada over similar claims? We need to wake up and realize we are going bankrupt. If we dont the least of our problems will be a bus blowing up in Bulgaria. We will have buses blowing up here. We will have murder, rapes, looting, and riots on our streets. We will have the government taking guns and indefinitely detaining citizens here.

      Fares Fayq Odeh, 14, of Gaza City, killed by IDF gunfire to his head while throwing stones near the Karni checkpoint.

      Amr Qathem Kamal Arafat, 17, of Nablus, killed by IDF gunfire to his back while throwing stones from the roof of his school.

      I could continue but the point is clear. Over 90% of the “children” your source mentions were teenagers, over two thirds of those were killed at, near, or from injuries suffered at or near a “demonstration”. What exactly is happening at these “demonstrations” that is causing so many people to be killed? Why is no information available for the years prior to 2000? How is “hostilities” being defined? Why is your source holding Israel responsible for the economic conditions of those living under Hamas? Why does one of the sources not print the Palestinians killed by Palestinians in the first intifada (I can answer this one: more Palestinians were killed by each other than by Israel)? Why no condemnation of Jordan for Black September?

And as for your whole Gettysburg comparison (and I use that worse very loosely since there is no comparison), how does a memorial commemorating a critical battle in a war compare to a memorial for victims of a massive campaign of extermination? Are there not memorials for the Rwandan or Armenian genocides? Cambodia? Darfur?

      Your not fooling anyone but yourself with your pathetic attempts to cover your blatant prejudice and bias against Jews.       TZION, good to hear from you once again. My problem, as many pro-Israel propagandists would say, is one of fairness and balance in reporting. Conventional wisdom is that Jews are always the victim, when reality paints a different story. The ‘problem’ is that the reality is rarely reported.

      Since you brought up the extermination argument, let’s take a closer look at why Jews were singled out as enemies of the German state. Let’s see who declared war on who, first. Let’s see who boycotted who, first. Let’s also ask why those who declared war shouldn’t have suffered the exact same consequences that all others, who have declared war, have suffered.

      That’s your source? Every source you quote is one that intentionally represents information in support of their own agenda. Even with it your argument is mind numbingly idiotic. How does a group of American Jews number in the hundreds or thousands at most calling for a boycott on German goods justify the systematic murder of nearly 11 million people over half of them European Jews? Do you seriously believe that Hitler was only responding? Only a collectivist, for whom the concept of individualism and individual rights are ludicrous, could possibly make that argument. Hitler was a collectivist (Aryans are inherently superior), as are Communists (the rich are all evil), antisemites like yourself (Jews are all guilty of cultural subversion) etc.

      Hitler’s hatred of Jews was made clear long before the Holocaust itself came around. My grandparents and great-grandparents were German Jews and they started leaving their homes, businesses and coming to the US long before WWII and Holocaust officially started. My grandfather got out so early that he had become a US citizen, been drafted, completed his training and been stationed at Pearl Harbor all BEFORE the Japanese attack. What inspired his family to flee? My dad has found reason to believe that a Nazi attack on their local butchery, which they repelled, followed by someone taking a shot at my great-grandfather might have been what set them on edge.

      TZION, you can attack the source, but it remains the truth. You can do your own own search, historical fact is fact. All you do is make and argument that attempts to lessen the impact of those facts, because these facts lead to a different conclusion and reality than your contrived reality.

      Look, Einstein was an admirer of fellow Jew, Marx. Marx’s philosophy has led to the deaths of hundreds of millions. None of this changes the facts of his special theory of relativity.

    Just saw on Fox an updated report that as these tourists were getting on the bus a suicide bomber got on with them detonated his bomb. Apparently a well planned attack by a group who knew they were coming.

    And now lets back a few stories and we have the muslim brotherhood infiltratrating our federal govt under this admin…….they have already changed training policies on ranger and spec op groups making us look like a bunch of “racists” …..admit it they are trying to take over the world and they calll themselves peaceful ..when the American people have the cloud removed from their eyes by the blaze then action will come to pass let it be sooner than later
