New Book’s Ironic Claim: Catholic Church Paid to Send Obama to an Alinsky-Founded Group’s Community Organizing Training (See the Documents)

Book No Higher Power: Catholic Church Paid to Send Obama to Alinsky Founded Groups Training | Receipt A new book by conservative icon Phyllis Schlafly and American Spectator journalist George Neumayr exposes never-before-seen documents that purportedly show that the Catholic Church supported, and gave monies to, Barack Obama in the 1980s to attend a community organizing training with the Saul Alinsky-founded Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF). Additionally, in “No Higher Power,” the authors highlight other problematic funding and allegiances between the Church and ultra-liberal causes.

It’s no secret that the left has learned the ropes of using faith and religion for political gain. For years, liberals lamented conservatives’ close allegiance with Christian leaders. But now, in a change of course, they seem to be revving up the engagement and infiltration of faith communities in an effort to harness political power.

Progressive evangelicals, for instance, have a bizarre history of taking funding from far-left billionaire George Soros, an atheist (we’ve covered liberal evangelical groups and their controversial stances and ties here, here and here). Many groups and churches, too, have joined in on leftist calls for social justice, among other Democratic-laden sentiment.

While gaining in its prevalence, this systematic exploitation of religion by liberals who seek to use the cohesive forces of belief to progress political agendas is nothing new. Segments of the Catholic Church, for example, have been frequently accused of being sympathetic to — and even funding — leftist activities. Most recently, the Bishops, themselves, have accused nuns of liberal inclinations and separating from Church doctrine. But the ties and issues seem to go far beyond the nuns.

In “No Higher Power,” Schlafly and Neumayr focus upon Obama’s “war on religious freedom,” as the book puts it. Since the announcement of his controversial contraceptive mandate, many have claimed that the president and his administration have turned hostile towards people of faith (although there were other benchmarks, including his attack on the ministerial exemption and an alleged apathy toward the faith community that some called out as earlier warning signs).

Considering Obama’s ongoing stalemate with Catholic leaders, though, there are some past connections that are worth noting. TheBlaze secured an exclusive excerpt from Chapter 6 of the book, where the aforementioned documents seem to show that the Catholic Church funded Obama’s IAF trip. On the surface, this may seem benign, but connecting the dots showcases what the authors contend is further evidence of leftist infiltration into the Church.

Let’s start with the IAF, the organization that put on the training session that the Church purportedly paid to send Obama to. Previously, we have delved deeply into IAF and its use of faith to capture for political gain. The infamous, ultra-left group was founded back in 1940 by Alinsky, the father of community organizing. As we’ve reported, IAF, which is still very active today, is known for using religion as an adhesive force to bring individuals together in support of Democratic principles and candidates.

Naturally, there’s some irony considering that the Catholic Church allegedly paid to send Obama to a far-leftist training, specifically when it comes to the current state of affairs between the president and bishops. Here’s an exclusive portion of the book that delves into the support that Obama allegedly received from the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), an arm of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops:

In the 1980s, the Catholic archdiocese of Chicago contributed to the training of Obama in the very Alinskyite radicalism that would culminate in such anti-religious measures as the HHS mandate. In fact, in the course of writing this book, we met a source who once had access to copies of documents from the archives of the Chicago archdiocese. This source supplied us with never-before-published copies of invoices, checks, and letters that confirm the Church’s support for the man who would one day seek to destroy its religious freedom.

In a series of appendices, we have reproduced the check and invoice showing that the archdiocese of Chicago paid for Obama’s plane trip to a conference in Los Angeles run by the Industrial Areas Foundation, the community organizing group founded by Alinsky.

TheBlaze has secured the alleged documents, which the book says were given to the authors by someone who had access to Church archives and are also presented in the appendix of “No Higher Power.” In the 1980s, a time during which Obama was on staff with Developing Communities Project, an off-shoot of the Calumet Community Religious Conference, the group received support from the CCHD. Below, see a letter on CCRC letterhead that is signed by Obama; in it, he mentions an “IAF training in Los Angeles” and seeks a reimbursement for his travels:

Then, a follow-up note shows a memorandum from the Campaign for Human Development (the name given to the group before “Catholic” was later added in), which confirms a travel payment to the then-community organizer:

While some may dismiss this as an odd or one-time affair, it seems Alinsky had extensive ties to the Church (specifically CCHD), as he attempted to use religion — much like the left is today — to harness the political power of a mass group of people tied together by common belief. Schlafly and Neumayr continue, providing more on this allegedly cozy relationship between Alinsky and Church officials:

Alinsky had always targeted churches for radical infiltration, and to a certain degree he succeeded. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) was the Alinskyite branch of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops which had offices in dioceses across the country. It was founded in 1969 by priests and bishops close to Saul Alinsky, such as Monsignor John Egan, who sat on Alinsky’s Industrial Areas Foundation board. The group was originally called the Campaign for Human Development, with “Catholic” added later as its socialist work began to draw criticism.

Alinsky had initially won favor with some in the Archdiocese of Chicago by appearing to be an advocate of justice for the poor. In the 1950s, in fact, Alinsky received tens of thousands of dollars from the Church to “study” poverty and racism.

This isn’t the first time CCHD has been exposed as a leftist arm of the Church. And a travel reimbursement is far from the only example of Catholic monies going toward far leftist causes. In 2011, in a column for First Things, Fr. Val J. Peter also delved into these issues, writing that it may, indeed, be time for the CCHD to be shuttered. Considering some of the other funding allegations written up by Schlafly and Neumayr, it’s no wonder why some have grave concerns about the group’s continued existence (hint: excessive financial ties to ACORN):

Indeed, from 1998-2008, CCHD gave $7.3 million of Catholic-donated money to the now notorious ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, a radical leftist organization that supported Barack Obama’s brand of “community organizing.” In 2007 alone, CCHD increased its support of ACORN, giving ACORN thirty-seven grants totally $1,037,000. During 2007-2008, ACORN and its affiliated organizations were aggressively registering what they claimed were 1.3 million poor people to vote. ACORN focused on new registrations in the key toss-up states of Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Florida.

CCHD knew exactly how ACORN spent its money. CCHD’s executive director, Ralph McCloud, admitted to Catholic News Service that “some of the funds that the Catholic Campaign contributed to ACORN in the past undoubtedly were used for voter registration drives.”

Even though the pro-Obama political activity of ACORN had been widely reported, and even though employees of ACORN and affiliated organizations like Project Vote had either been indicted or convicted of submitting false voter registration forms in fourteen states, CCHD, in June 2008, approved grants of $113 million to forty local ACORN affiliates for the cycle beginning July 1, 2008. Those grants were ratified by the United States Conference of Bishops at its June 2008 meting.

Under press scrutiny and backlash from members of the laity, the CCHD-ACORN relationship suddenly became too embarrassing for the bishops to ignore, and CCHD announced it was suspending (not canceling) the 2008 grants.

Considering the Catholic Church’s ongoing issues with the Obama administration, these ties are fascinating. Furthermore, the ongoing accusations being thrown at nuns by the bishops are also noteworthy. While there is a fear that leftist views have been too fervently embraced by the sisters, it seems there may also be a need to look further into other facets of the Church (at least the CCHD) as well.

  CONVENTSCHOOLGIRL… as one who watches “The Votex”, I must say that Michael never, never has said anything about “[t]he Pope answers to a Prime Minister and has abrogated his place as Vicar.” He has chastised some of the Bishops for some of the positions they hold, but never said anything of what you’ve stated about Pope Benedict XVI.

Catholics are 1/5 of the worlds’ population. We are a diverse lot. Seattle had a Bishop named Hunthousen back in the 70′s that advocated for gay marriage. Why anyone would be surprised that there are radical elements to the Catholic church is beyond me.

Back in the 1960s, Saul Alinsky was known as a person who tried to help the poor and downtrodden. The Catholic church was infiltrated by members of Alinsky’s groups. The bishops and priests who really thought they were doing a good thing by paying for Obama to be trained to help those in poverty, etc. were not aware of Alinsky’s radical roots. It has only been in the past few years that Alinsky’s true background and intentions have come to light.
Under the leadership of Cardinal Dolan, the Catholics bishops have drawn a line in the sand. Obama has been told, regarding his mandate for the church to provide free contraception and abortion, that “We cannot comply. We will not comply”. Lawsuits have been filed against the government, protesting the violation of religious freedom and civil rights.

The Catholic Church has NEVER approved of abortion! The Catholic Church and its member have NEVER worshipped idols! The rosary is a series of prayers taken from the BIBLE that meditates upon the life, death, and resurrection of JESUS CHRIST.   Rome destroyed Jerusalem, yes they did. Rome is not the Catholic Church. Romans persecuted Christians and at the time all Christians were Catholic.
  It is not possible to give an exact year when the Catholic Church began to be called the “Roman Catholic Church,” but it is possible to approximate it. The term originates as an insult created by Anglicans who wished to refer to themselves as Catholic. They thus coined the term “Roman Catholic” to distinguish those in union with Rome from themselves and to create a sense in which they could refer to themselves as Catholics (by attempting to deprive actual Catholics to the right to the term).

  Saint Peter in Chains Church actually does have chains.
  They are the chains the history tells us were used to imprison Peter.
  They are now kept in a glass box.
  
  The basilica was first built in the middle of the 5th century to house the relic of the chains that bound Saint Peter while imprisoned in Jerusalem, given to Pope Leo I by Empress Eudoxia (wife of Emperor Valentinian III).
  
  According to legend, when the pope held them next to the chains from of Peter’s first imprisonment in the Mamertine Prison in Rome, the two chains miraculously fused together.

I find this claim quite believable. In 1965 when was a graduate student in Rochester, NY, a group of Rochester area churches paid at least one Sal Alinski organizer to work the third ward of the city. (This individual lived a front apartment of the building I lived in.) This program was a response to the riots of the previous summer. It was thought that some sort of grass roots organization would lead to more active and peaceful community involvement with city government, breaking down of barriers etc. I doubt that this was the fruit, but I left town after graduation and lost touch with Rochester’s politics.

When I read this, what options do I have as a fervent Christian?
To disbelieve? – To disbelieve Matthew? – Or specifically this verse? – Or entire Scripture?
Or believe? – To believe Matthew? – Or specifically this verse? – Or entire Scripture?

When I read some comments whose authors insist that Christianity has nothing to do with Communism, should I tear this particular Matthew-devoted page out of the Bible? Or advise those authors to re-read the Scripture?

This Matthew’s utterance is what joins Christianity and Communism tighter than marriage.

LIBERALS NEED NOT READ – Glenn Beck is having a patriotic rally this weekend called “Restoring Love”, they have collected enough food to feed over 1 million people which will be sent to 11 cities that are in dire need. They have 35,000 volunteers from all over the world that have been working tirelessly to help repair and heal this country. Next week-end completes the trilogy, Restoring Honor, Restoring Courage and Restoring Love. The usual suspects, Code Pink and Westboro Baptist Church will be protesting.

Unless you are able to understand the “Alinsky way” it is difficult to understand how under handed these tactics are that are being used to further their communist agenda this way. This book is great because it reveals more about BHO bit by bit and the mask is off so we can see who he really is. We have been DUPED by Obama ans it is time to stop the movie he has been showing us all that is nothing but fiction with an evil means.

If you will read the article, it is not just the Catholic Church that has gone off course. It is also Evangelicals, and we already know about the Anglicans and the Presbyterians.

Many Lay Catholic groups are now fighting the socialist infiltration in the Catholic Church. Much of the fault lies with the United States Catholic Bishops (UCCB.)

For true Catholics, I recommend ChurchMilitantTV.org. The website has a daily video about the problems in the Church and getting it back to what it is supposed to be. We hav a wonderful conservative Pope, BUT some of the Bishops need serious reform.

The Catholic Church – literally translated, the “Universal” Church, and also, the Body of Christ – can not be defined or measured by the action of any one body that calls themselves Catholic. And this includes the USCCB. For those of us who are Christians, of every denomination, we should be reminded to recognize that Satan is real, and that he targets those whose fall would do the most for his cause. It is no wonder therefore that he has set his sites on the college of Bishops, having duped many with a feel good liberal (read: Socialist) agenda, and others, to be tempted and tormented with homosexuality. These tactics, foisted on a MINORITY of the U.S. Catholic leadership, have caused many to leave the Catholic Church – which was Satan’s goal all along.

Let’s not throw the baby out with the proverbial bath water. Let’s recognize that there is evil within every organization and city – including the Catholic Church, and the city of Chicago. Let’s pray for our brothers, that they repent. And let us be ever mindful of the words of the Prophets, including Jeremiah, who was heard just this past Sunday in every Catholic Church: “Woe to the Shepherds who mislead and scatter the flock of my pasture, says the LORD.” Jer 23:1.

Its difficult to decide, in practicality, the teachings of a higher power. One common argument is something about “were is that written?” As if it is written how parent are to love, teach and nurture their offsprings. It Nature’s Law, where is that written? Yet we know Nature’s Laws.

For some leadership is authority. For others leadership is a way to live and others are attracted. Wisdom is careful consideration of years of experiences guided by Nature’s Laws.

Nature teaches self reliance, man teaches dependency on the self reliant, envy of the self reliant. If everyone became self reliant would our nation prosper? If everyone became dependent would our nation prosper? If its your offsprings, what are you teaching?

there is much information about the Alinsky connection with the catholic church under the guise of the CCHD (catholic campaign for human development) who also supported ACORN. Thanks to Glenn and Church Militant website, Alinsky, Chicago, Obama and the catholic church are all interconnected which started back in the 50′s. The catholic church has been, either knowingly or unknowingly, been financially supporting communist causes for many years. I think that the future of CCHD is doomed. Many pew catholics refuse to give to CCHD even though they stopped supporting ACORN when it was uncovered they were getting money from the CCHD.

The Catholic Church has been divided into two parts the Spiritual and the Financial. The Pope is the Spiritual leader and no longer has control of the monies. Looks like they were looking out for the profits not the Prophets. The Catholics I know were very strong democrats and nothing could be said against any democrat, but as time went on and they saw how much against their believes he is the anger started to grow. Almost every time he opens his mouth he tries to destroy Religion, not just Catholic but all Religions. How many people do you know that would say the beatitudes were a hate speech ????????? His biggest problem is not so much his policies but his mouth. His policies are very destructive but his mouth tells people more of who he is and people let the theft of our freedom go right on over their heads saying no one would want to take away our freedoms????????
