Biden Speech Bombs With Philadelphia Firefighters
When Barack Obama and Joe Biden first began campaigning in 2008, their complimentary advantages as candidates were fairly clear – that is, Obama was the candidate who spoke to the young and minority voters (who had, up until that point, been his base) most capably, while Biden was the one who spoke to restive blue collar workers. As a matter of fact, Biden’s constant references to “taking the train” back from Washington were probably intended to demonstrate this supposedly more homespun character.
Yet as Vice President, Biden has shown himself to be prone to gaffes, even in his supposed home turf, a fact that has complicated this otherwise simple division of labor between him and the President. And Biden’s lack of comfort in the public eye, has, at least recently, become increasingly difficult not to notice. For evidence, simply look at his speech today to the International Association of Firefighters in Philadelphia.
Why? Because that speech reportedly had all the hallmarks of a vintage Biden gaffe-fest. To begin with, according to Business Insider, Biden mouthed odd lines such as “I wish my kids would become wealthy,” apparently intended as a means of reassuring the audience that Democrats aren’t anti-wealth. Needless to say, the line fell flat.
And then there was the fact that despite Biden’s attempts at pandering, he seemed to almost purposefully avoid hitting the right notes. One Philadelphia Firefighters’ Union President was apparently visibly upset at Biden for failing to include even one sentence regarding a local dispute in Philadelphia over an award to firefighters. From Business Insider’s report:
Bill Gault, president of Philadelphia Fire Fighter’s Union Local 22, said after Biden’s speech that he wanted Biden to endorse the implementation of an award to city firefighters that provided raises and protections against furloughs. An arbitration panel granted the award in early July, and last week the union filed a lawsuit against the city to ensure that it is enacted.
“I just wanted him to say one sentence to my mayor to honor the firefighters’ award,” Gault told Business Insider. “But I guess I can’t expect him to do that.”[...]
Gault was hoping for an endorsement from the vice president, which led to his disappointment.
“We feel unappreciated in this city. And if you ask these men in here, they’ll feel the same way,” Gault said. ”I’m disappointed that the vice president didn’t say, ‘Mr. Mayor, honor their agreement.’ It’s a very simple sentence.”
Simple, indeed, yet Biden skipped saying it. He did, however, throw in an obligatory dig at GOP nominee Mitt Romney – a dig that, when paired with the reaction to Biden’s speech, may sound more than a little ironic:
I don’t think he gets you. I don’t think he understands what you’re all about, what makes you tick, what makes you decide to go in this profession, which you couldn’t pay 90 percent of the population to do.
One wonders if the Vice President might have been projecting. Or, perhaps, he simply is a surrogate for the wrong candidate. After all, while running for President in the 2008 Democratic primary, Biden was very well-received by the same group:
In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. This is one reason why Right to Work legislation is favored by union MEMBERS who understand that it means they no longer have to pay into a PAC fund that supports communists like Obama.

Requiring an ID to vote is not a Jim Crow law. It is pretty difficult to get by in this country without having one, it simply prevents people from voting more than once or for someone who is dead. We need to go much further than this though if we are going to turn this country around. The inherent conflict of interest that occurs when people who receive federal and state entitlements are allowed to vote needs to be eliminated. It is obvious that politicians like President Obama lack integrity and are very willing to exploit this societal weakness and promise people other peoples money in order to buy their votes. We should expand the voter requirements and make it impossible for someone who has received entitlements like unemployment, welfare and food stamps for more than 27 weeks during an election year from voting. Now you progressives are going to scream Jim Crow but it isn’t. If the only way a person can vote is to be a productive self-supporting person for more than half a year, then self-serving politicians who want these peoples votes will be required to develop programs to turn them into productive citizens rather than pay them to remain unproductive. Everyone wins.

Posted on July 26, 2012 at 9:59amIn all seriousness, remember, a few years before Joe was selected to be a VP candidate he had a severe brain aneurysm and, more than likely, Ol’ Joe sufferred frontal lobe brain damage. This is not uncommon for the type of aneurysm that Biden had. One of the functions of the frontal lobe is to act like a self-censor reviewing what we are going to say or write and determine whether it is appropriate and if you should continue with that line of thought. It is obvious that Biden’s self-censoring mechanism is not working properly by the continuous gaffes that have come out of his mouth before being elected VP and most notably since his election. I wish I could feel sorry for him, but I am fairly confident that he has been told by very qualified physicians of his injury and he and the Democrat Party have kept it from the country. If Joe was a Republican, I have no doubt that all the country would have had this information given to them in 2008 during the campaign. Since I am a biologist and not a physician I could be wrong, but given Ol’ Joe’s history of gaffes since his aneurysm and recovery, I don’t think I am far off the mark.

I could fight to save myself against a tyrannical management on my own, and have the Union help them because I was a “scab”, or I could fight tyrannical management and force the Union to do their job on pain of getting sued and having a Department of Labor “Duty of Fair Representation” complaint filed against them. I am retired now.
I was a Union member once, but I got over that.
I was a Federal Employee, and I hoped I had got over that, too. But now I am a Federal Retiree, and still being screwed by the Government I served with loyalty and honor for so many years.

I wish I sat in the ‘comfy tv room’ 90% of the time. I dont know about where you volunteer, but where I work, I run my azz off most of my shift. 15+ calls a day is average and 20 or more are not unusual.
I dont have a problem with volunteers, they provide a valuable service in their communities. But dont tear down the ones who have chosen to do it professionaly. We provide a service to our communities just like you do.
And if there are so many patriots willing to volunteer their time, then why are volunteer departments all over the country struggling to keep enough members?

I still laugh when Limbaugh plays the clip of him telling (forgot his title) to stand up, when the man is sitting in a wheel chair. Anything for a laugh.

Posted on July 26, 2012 at 10:19amHe hasn’t dumped him because there are A LOT of skeletons in those closets. A stereotype of unions is “get even” even at their own peril. The midset is that “you shouldn’t have what you have, and even if I have to struggle I am going to keep you from having it.” That is why you see union guys (not all) intentionally break things at the company – to get even with the owner. They don’t realize that the company has even less money to pay the unions because of all the damage. Thus, if The Bamster gets rid of Biden, he knows or Biden has told him, there will be revenge.
