Mayor Bloomberg, also known as “Nanny Bloomberg” thanks to his many regulations for New York City, has gone a step beyond banning sugary sodas and trans fats, according to the New York Post. Now, it seems he is also trying to regulate breast milk.
(Related: No More Big Gulps: New York City to Ban Sale of Large Sodas and Sugared Drinks)
According to the Post, Bloomberg is actually pushing hospitals to keep their baby formulas “behind locked doors” so that new mothers will be more likely to breastfeed. Participating hospitals will begin on September 3d.
The New York Post has more:
The nanny state is going after moms.
[...]
Under the city Health Department’s voluntary Latch On NYC initiative, 27 of the city’s 40 hospitals have also agreed to give up swag bags sporting formula-company logos, toss out formula-branded tchotchkes like lanyards and mugs, and document a medical reason for every bottle that a newborn receives.
While breast-feeding activists applaud the move, bottle-feeding moms are bristling at the latest lactation lecture.
“If they put pressure on me, I would get annoyed,” said Lynn Sidnam, a Staten Island mother of two formula-fed girls, ages 4 months and 9 years. “It’s for me to choose.”
Under Latch On NYC, new mothers who want formula won’t be denied it, but hospitals will keep infant formula in out-of-the-way secure storerooms or in locked boxes like those used to dispense and track medications.
With each bottle a mother requests and receives, she’ll also get a talking-to. Staffers will explain why she should offer the breast instead.
“It’s the patient’s choice,” said Allison Walsh, of Beth Israel Medical Center. “But it’s our job to educate them on the best option.”
Read more about the “Latch On NYC” initiative by clicking here.
Like Bloomberg’s other regulations, the breast milk policy bears a resemblance to Cass Sunstein’s “nudge” theory. The Administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (also known as the “Regulatory Czar“), Sunstein has long-advocated “nudging” Americans in the direction they really ought to go, by defining their choices and making the less desirable ones more inconvenient. No one is forcing you to do anything…just helping to guide your decisions.
But for many, regulating soda and regulating breast milk are two different matters entirely. The latter, obviously, feels much more invasive.
Back in April, when Bloomberg was just proposing the regulations, even Whoopi Goldberg told the mayor to “back off.”
Watch her segment from The View, below:
One commenter simply asked: “Why is Bloomberg so obsessed with what we put in our mouths?”
Apparently mothers have the “right to choose” an abortion in New York City, but if they “choose” bottle-feeding they’ll receive a stern talking-to, endorsed by the government.

My youngest grandson was miserable for his first six months on the planet until my daughter realized that he had to be allergic to breast milk.

Bloomberg may wish to concentrate on the exodus of productive individuals leaving NYC for lower taxes outside the city.

Jul. 29, 2012 at 6:17pmOf all the comments about this mayor, how come no one is suggesting that this man is certifiable? Let’s all close our eyes, take a deep breath, and think back to the 1960s and before. How many America soldiers died for our country battling dictators of other lands who didn’t impose half of the things this nut is imposing on his city. To make matters worse; we are apparently so brainwashed that most of us simply allow us to bed led by the noses, with no one fighting. Mmmm, where do I remember hearing that happen before?

If I had been given a ‘talking to’ every time I asked for formula to feed and nourish my child in NICU I probably would have gone into an even deeper depression. All I have to say is shame on you Bloomberg! Until you carry a child for 9 months then go through hours of labor to give birth you have No right to tell us mothers what we can and can’t do in regards to breast feeding.

Jul. 29, 2012 at 9:17pmThe real reason is so fewer mothers who use WIC will use formula, thus saving the government money. The thing I find funny and will be interesting to watch is that WIC has always shunned the breast feeding mothers. In fact some areas will not provide formula to a mother/ infant if they breast feed even once a day.

hahahahahaha allergic to breast milk, thats laughable actually more laughable that you believe it! maybe something mommy was eating but thats all a baby can be allergic to, breast milk is specially formulated to each individual child. I have always thought you should need a prescription to get formula because so few women choose to give their baby the best start because its “easier” to formula feed. who said being a mother was suppose to be easy? go to a doc if you cant because it doesnt come in or your meds wont allow you to then you can buy it with a prescription otherwise if you are healthy and able it should be the only choice. not a fan of this man but i am a fan of breast milk !

Jul. 30, 2012 at 1:05pmI think Mayor Bloomberg should go get checked out for a 72 hour at Belview – this guy has got to be nuts?!
Want baby? Want choice? Have them take you to a hospital outside city limits/county.. or better yet, have a home water birth! We did… and it went swimingly! We had to [had to] use formula because the milk, due to the drugs they give you, delayed the milk coming in for two days – that was…. spooky.
I only wish we had our first child at home too – boy! Were we idiots… pharma/medical drones on that one. You have a home water birth, hire a Dula or midwife, one that has decided to leave their state accredidation behind. This process is more personal, you get to do the birth at home, breastfeeding can start [if you can or want to] immediately, and you, the parents, get to control the flow of info to the government, not like it is with the doctor or hospital. Our doctor was quite surprised when we came to the office with a new little one for his first check-up – he couldn’t believe we’d do such a thing.
Educate yourselves on breastfeeding & why do it. Suppliment with Ephamil if you have to. And consider home water birth with a midwife. It was the best experence of our lives! And… its all your choice; you’re [parents] are in the driver’s seat.

When my children were born in the 60s I didn’t breastfeed them as with each birth my milk dried up within days of delivery. So I made their formulas with whole cows milk and water. Step by step is how it is done, and so it is happening. So others of the progressive movement in the local and county governments across the nation will follow in his madness; and all of us citizens of the nation will pay the price in the end if they are not stopped along with Obama.
That is the pattern of the progressives:
Top down (Federal”
Bottom up (Local – county, city, town)
Inside out (Regulations, schools, lawsuits)
Until the entire structure of America has been reengineered by them into a socialist/communist system.
