Head Cam Catches Harrowing Motorcycle-Deer Collision During Race — And Both Walked Away From It
Late last month during a two-day motorcycle race through West Virginia, Braden Childers was cruising down the road, flanked by forest on either side. If you grew up in a wooded area, you probably know what’s coming: a deer.
The doe bolted across the road just in time to make collision with Childers’ bike inevitable — and his head cam caught the whole thing.

As a bonus, here’s the slow-mo version:
Childers writes in his description of the video he uploaded to YouTube that the collision occurred in the final stage of the race after he had already gone 300 miles. As you can see in the video, Childers assesses himself and his bike before taking off again — he was still in a race afterall.

This photo was taken ahead of the collision. (Photo: Cory Wagoner via Facebook)
Childers said the deer was able to walk off the road “under its own power.”
As for how Childers finished in the race, he writes on his Facebook page that he was still able to take second overall and first in the 450th class. He also notes this incident shows why he doesn’t race without his “GoPro” camera.

Posted on September 13, 2012 at 11:34amIt was George Bush’s fault. We should ban deer. Maybe we need more education about deer. Is the EPA aware that this area has a petroleum-based road running through it?

Posted on August 11, 2012 at 12:46amA deer jumped onto the front of my car . Amazing how quickly it can happen. No warning, just wham, a deer bouncing off my hood. It was sad, and I was sorry for the deer, but there were no options, it began and was over nearly instantly. Don’t judge.

Posted on August 10, 2012 at 11:43pmIf you see a deer on the side of the road remember that a deer will always leap straight ahead before turning. So if he is facing the highway and you startle him he will jump out in front of you before turning or going a different direction.

Posted on August 10, 2012 at 4:18pmThis happened to a friend of mine in AZ, however, the deer hit HER. She was cruising at about 50 and was nearly killed. She spent 2 months in the hosp (they weren’t yet overcrowed with illegals). As with terrorist attacks, you cannot guard against everything, everywhere, all the time. It’s called ‘life,’

Posted on August 10, 2012 at 3:45pmWe just got a road kill law here in Idaho. Now you get to keep what you kill, with exceptions. Now I keep a box in the back of the car labeled body bag which has my knifes and gloves and big bag for the carcass. If I ever get stopped waiting to here the question from the cops. “What’s the body bag for sir?”

Posted on August 10, 2012 at 4:01pmLol – thanks for the laugh. Not a bad idea.
I’d like to see the look on your neighbor’s face when at 11pm, you back your truck up to your garage door, get out with some blood on your shirt and pull a filled body bag into your garage. Then, smile & wave to your neighbor before turning out the lights.

Posted on August 10, 2012 at 5:58pmActually, it pans the scene twice. I looked hard myself toi see if the deer got up. You see it down in one glimpse, the a moment later, the deer is gone. And for hte people wondering about why they didn’t see the cameraman who took the head on shot, most helmet cams use a wide angle lens. From 20 feet away it seems like your subject is 50 feet away.

Posted on August 10, 2012 at 1:22pmIt’s disconcerting that motorcyclists were racing through the state. Don’t they have speed limits? Did they have a police escort? Or were the police in pursuit?

Posted on August 10, 2012 at 10:26amFrist, its a rally which isn’t necessarily a speed event. That was obviously a transfer section as 1) he has pure offroad tires, and 2) wasn’t really pushing it that hard, and 3) you notice how casually he was scored at the end?
No doubt there were a number of “special test” speed sections, and others were one has to maintain the specified speed, no more, no less.
Believe this is the event: http://rallywv.com/aboutrallywestvirginia.html
And “450th class”? Come now! Its the 450cc class as the bike is a KTM 450.

Posted on August 10, 2012 at 9:49amGood thing he had slowed down for the curve before hitting the deer. Light bike and reduced speed for curve saved both deer and dude. A lot of these don’t come out so good.
After missing two deer and one owl one night, I ended my 80 mile trip to the Mississipi river a few years back. First deer was only a brown blur. Second one I heard his hooves on the pavement even with my loud exaust pipes, he was that close. After the owl flew up out of a ditch across my path real close, I figured I’d used up my ‘free passes’ that night. Stopped at friends’ place.

Posted on August 10, 2012 at 8:53amLucky. I was hit by a deer recently (literally, the deer ran into the side of my brand new car while I was going 60 mph on the freeway.) The deer didn’t fare so well. Neither did my new car–10K in damages.
