Head Cam Catches Harrowing Motorcycle-Deer Collision During Race — And Both Walked Away From It
Late last month during a two-day motorcycle race through West Virginia, Braden Childers was cruising down the road, flanked by forest on either side. If you grew up in a wooded area, you probably know what’s coming: a deer.
The doe bolted across the road just in time to make collision with Childers’ bike inevitable — and his head cam caught the whole thing.

As a bonus, here’s the slow-mo version:
Childers writes in his description of the video he uploaded to YouTube that the collision occurred in the final stage of the race after he had already gone 300 miles. As you can see in the video, Childers assesses himself and his bike before taking off again — he was still in a race afterall.

Childers said the deer was able to walk off the road “under its own power.”
As for how Childers finished in the race, he writes on his Facebook page that he was still able to take second overall and first in the 450th class. He also notes this incident shows why he doesn’t race without his “GoPro” camera.

Posted on September 13, 2012 at 5:08pmThe only thing that helped save this guy was that he doesn’t know how to ride properly. He wasn’t downshifting into the corners or braking appropriately. I also think he’s foolish to have not checked his bike out after the crash. The impact could have damaged his front brake cylinder and brake line. Hits like that can tweak the front wheels/handlbars out of alignment too.

Posted on September 13, 2012 at 2:25pmThe first clue was the first deer standing there watching. They are never alone, it seems. I think the first deer was egging on the second deer in some deer gang initiation.
