An Alabama woman said she was forced to shoot an intruder that broke into her home this week in order to protect herself and her daughters.
Martha Lewis of Dora, Ala. told WVTM-TV it was about 3 a.m. Tuesday morning when she heard a loud noise, which turned out to be someone kicking in her door. Lewis said she called the police and grabbed her gun, then went to her daughters’ room and told them each to get something to defend themselves with. She said one grabbed an ax and one got a butcher knife.
They were at the top of the stairs when they saw a man standing there at the bottom.
“I knew when he stepped on the landing that I would have to shoot him,” Lewis told the station. “He starts like coming up the stairs and he said, ‘would you shoot me?’ And I said ‘I don’t want to have to but I will.’”
Ignoring her warnings, the man kept coming — and that’s when Lewis said she fired.
“It wasn’t like, oh can I pull the trigger? It was like when should I shoot? When will he be close enough that I know I won’t miss him? That’s one of the things that was going through my mind,” she said.
The man stumbled outside into the yard where police found him, WVTM reported. Police said he’s 25-year-old Michael Jacobs and was hospitalized in stable condition.

Lewis told the station one of the responding police officers said it would have been a different situation if she hadn’t been armed.
“One of them said we would be writing up a different report if she had not had that gun,” Lewis said.
Police said Lewis will not be charged for shooting the suspect. He faces charges of burglary and criminal mischief as well as possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, according to WVTM.
Lewis said she’s had the gun for about three years but only for protection purposes.
“There’s so much talk about banning guns and gun control but they’re for protection,” she said. “There’s no way that I could have fought him off.”

She says she is very confident in the police protecting her and she doesn’t think anyone should be allowed to own a gun. I hope she never gets mugged because that will be one heck of a wake-up call for her. If YOU want to live in a home without a gun for protection, got right ahead. The truth is the average women is much weaker physically than the average man. I’m not a very fit man but I have no doubt that if I were to be in a fight with a woman, unless she was very physically fit and well trained in some type of martial art fighting style, I would have no problem winning the fight. Men just naturally have faster reflexes and are stronger. It is what it is.

At age 5 their grandfather bought each a Chipmonk .22 single shot and we taught them to shoot targets. My 4 grandsons were taught the same – do not even point a toy gun at anyone. I have bought all of them a .22 single shot Crickett that replaced the Chipmonks that my sons still have + the boxes they came in. My 3 sons and their wives all have carry permits.

I would also suggest to the lady to have a gun downstairs. At my house there are 2 Rugar Mark II’s, a S&W Lightweight and a Browning Buck Mark all loaded with .22HP and 2 loaded clips with each all through out my house. All we have to do is flip off the safety and aim – pull trigger. All my family knows where they are also and then theres one Ruger SR-556 .223 with a 30 round clip. I also know where all my 3 sons keep their guns also.

This woman and any other person who defends themselves in their home against unlawful aggression can not be sued by the criminal or his/her family and they cannot be legally charged with a crime by the police. She is 48 and has a sawed off 12 gauge pump near the bed and carries a Glock 29 (she has a CHL). This is a nice petite woman that grew up with a houseful of guns and still believes she has the right to own and carry.

When your lips are flapping you are mentally engaged with the intruder and simultaneously distracted (even for a few seconds) from CBM (center body mass) target acquisition and pulling the trigger (as Martha shared) at the right moment. Telling an intruder that you don’t want to shoot but you will if you have to tells the bad guy you are ambivalent about defending yourself and invites him/her to test your resolve. Ideally, the last thing an intruder should see is your muzzle flash, not high intensity emergency room lighting.
I hope for Martha’s sake that her daughter’s butcher knife and axe were properly registered. Otherwise…
