Team Obama Offers Romney a Deal: Release 5 Years of Tax Returns and We’ll (Kind of) Drop It

Barack Obama’s re-election campaign kept up pressure against Republican rival Mitt Romney on Friday, challenging the former Massachusetts governor to release at least five years of tax returns.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina made the tax-disclosure challenge to Romney campaign manager Matt Rhoades in a letter Friday morning. Messina said he was taking the step because Romney “apparently fears the more he offers, the more our campaign will demand that he provide.”

Here’s the full text of the Obama letter to Romney [via CBS’ Mark Knoller]:

Dear Matt:

I am writing to ask again that the Governor release multiple years of tax returns, but also to make an offer that should address his concerns about the additional disclosures. Governor Romney apparently fears that the more he offers, the more our campaign will demand that he provide. So I am prepared to provide assurances on just that point: if the Governor will release five years of returns, I commit in turn that we will not criticize him for not releasing more — neither in ads nor in other public communications or commentary for the rest of the campaign.

This request for the release of five years, covering the complete returns for 2007-2012, is surely not unreasonable. Other Presidential candidates have released more, including the Governor’s father who provided 12 years of returns. In the Governor’s case, a five year release would appropriately span all the years that he has been a candidate for President. It would also help answer outstanding questions raised by the one return he has released to date, such as the range in the effective rates paid, the foreign accounts maintained, the foreign investments made, and the types of tax shelters used.

To provide these five years, the Governor would have to release only three more sets of returns in addition to the 2010 return he has released and the 2011 return he has pledged to provide. And, I repeat, the Governor and his campaign can expect in return that we will refrain from questioning whether he has released enough or pressing for more.

In other words, release more tax returns and we’ll stop criticizing you for not releasing more (and more) tax returns. Notice there’s no commitment not to criticize what’s in the tax returns.

The Romney camp fired back quickly. Here’s the full text of their response [again, via Knoller]:

Hey Jim,

Thanks for the note.

It is clear that President Obama wants nothing more than to talk about Governor Romney’s tax returns instead of the issues that matter to voters, like putting Americans back to work, fixing the economy and reining in spending.

If Governor Romney’s tax returns are the core message of your campaign, there will be ample time for President Obama to discuss them over the next 81 days.

In the meantime, Governor Romney will continue to lay out his plans for a stronger middle class, to save Medicare, to put work back into welfare, and help the 23 million Americans struggling to find work in the Obama economy.

See you in Denver.

Romney, as some of you may already know, made headlines yesterday when he told reporters he’s never paid less than 13 percent of his income in taxes during the past decade. The presumed Republican presidential candidate said he has also given generously to charity and that, including those contributions, he’s given up more than 20 percent of his income annually.

Aides later said Romney meant to say 13.9 percent, the amount he already disclosed for his 2010 federal return.

  When I heard about this letter from Messina this morning on the Commie Propaganda News snipet. I just laughed about the lack a negotiation skills of the Obozo camp. Thought that Romney should reply something like this…” Mr. Messina, we have released two years of taxes which is more than required by law to release. So, if you want to keep harping on the Tax Non Issue that was so last week’s news cycle, go for it. The Romney Campaign is going to start coming after the ridiculous Obozo disastrous failures like a spyder monkey does a ba-fing-na-na.   So 3 1/2 years of a racist attack against the President is fine, but we are not allowed to see any emails or records of Romney’s time as governor (he had is people purge the hard drives), his time with the Olympics (does records, too were purged) or his tax records which were proven to be fraudulent once.
  
  Romney is hiding a dark secret that would disqualify him as President is the only logical assumption that can be drawn. He can disprove all of this if he just releases his taxes.

  One year they slipped up and forgot (statue of Limitation) so they seized my bank account until I signed a paper relinking my rights So they could preform there audit.
  If Mr Romney Failed to Pay or cheat on his Taxes he would be trying to get out of Federal Prison not
  running for the presidency.

  “13 percent of his income in taxes during the past decade” At least Beckett has the integrity to provide the correct quote which did not specify income taxes, but taxes in general. Which shows the slick liar Romney his as he speaks of total taxes, real estate, state taxes, even perhaps sales taxes. The question is of course the amount he paid in federal income taxes, which is obviously much less than the 13% or he would clearly say FEDERAL INCOME TAXES. It is a real hoot to see all the self proclaimed good christian people try and rally behind and support an obvious liar. If you doubt he is a liar than research his latest negative Medicare and Medicaid ads. Both of which are flat out lies that even a 5th. grader could research and identify.

  Obama was an AFFIRMATIVE ACTION student, which means he would have gotten into any college he wanted, regardless of his GPA and especially because of his LOW GPA.

The way I see it, if Romney paid 0.1% of what he made it’s more than I paid and I paid more than the majority of Americans. It’s the pot calling the kettle black. I’m sick of this class warfare. The only fair tax is a flat tax.

  Did you follow the tax code when you filed taxes last year? Did you use any loopholes you were eligible for? Deductions? Credits?
  
  The problem isn’t with Romney, it’s with the tax code. If you don’t like the tax code, work to change it. I myself would love to see a flat tax, or abolish the income tax entirely and go to a national sales tax. No loopholes, no credits or deductions (and I would be giving up a few).
  
  This is the only way to ensure that all Americans pay their “fair share” and “have some skin in the game.”

  I dabble in stocks and the money that I invest is the money that I earned previously from working and has already been taxed. I have no problem with the %15 tax on any profits that I may make when I trade stocks.
  
  I also have a lot of stocks that are deep in the red and I am unable to take a full tax deduction on those losses.
  
  I might also mention that I am no where close to be a millionaire but I do live on a budget and live within my means.
  
  I am sure that the investments that Mitt Romney are making is being funded by money he earned as an income and paid taxes on those at a higher rate.
  
  If he uses the legal deductions that the legislature set then what is your problem. Just as he has released the tax records required by law. Again what is the problem. If you don’t like the law then contact your Representative and ask him/her to fight to change the regulations.

  Lets take a worker earning $100 a week and pays $13 in taxes, leaving him $87 dollars to live on, while the rich earns $1,000 per week, pays 13% in taxes and is left with $870 per week to live on. The truth is a flat rate punishes the poor they have less and less disposable income, while the Romney’s get to hoard more and more gold.

I think if I’m poor and I’m getting $x worth of food benefits, and $x worth of welfare benefits, and $x worth of free health care benefits at the local clinic, and probably some free or severely discounted section 8 housing … I can afford to pay a little into the system. $13 doesn’t seem that harsh to me.

He then needs to drop any discussion until Obama makes good on it and concentrate on the economy and Obama’s record as president, and Romney’s plans for the future. EVERY discussion by both Romney and his surrogates need to be redirected to these three issues. “Mr Romney, what about your tax returns?” ANS: ” Did you know that Pres Obama has just loaned 20 Million of YOUR taxpayer dollars to a RUSSIAN car dealer because they are friends?” This has gone on long enough.

The solution to me seems so simple! Gov Romney calls a press conference, one of his aides push out a file cabinet on a dolley. Romeny says “here is all of my paperwork from birth to the present and you can see it when my opponent does the same”. Imagine this as a poker game, going all in. Imagine the two men sitting at a poker table. Obama bets tax returns, Romney calls and raises with college transcripts…Obama folds! Election over! What are YOU hiding Mr President?

People don’t care about Obama’s college grades any more than they cared about Bubba who “didn’t inhale” or Bush who allegedly devoted much of his youth to cocaine and purely perfunctory service in the Air National Guard. Youthful indiscretions and even minor crimes like drug use are easy to forgive. But even if all Romney’s tax returns turn out to be spic-n-span and totally legal, they will highlight that fact that the very wealthy have ways of sheltering income, taking deductions and shifting taxes that are not available to us ordinary mortals. Any I’ll-show- you-mine-if-you-show-me-yours deal would be entirely to the advantage of Obama.

  Of course his Columbia GPA could be good & he could be pulling a rope a dope.

The issue is not tax returns and it never was. Let’s not waste time by allowing them to craft the narrative. American voters don’t care about Romney’s tax returns. They care about jobs, exorbitant energy costs, particularly gasolene and looming tax increases on an unheard of scale and health care. Obama has done absolutely nothing to address any of these issues.

Wow, the Left seems all about seeing past records of the potential candidates for office. How about “team Romney” agreeing to this, IF and ONLY IF, “team Obama” releases, oh, say all of his college records and transcripts (including what has to be a nice juicy dissertation paper or two)? You know, for transparency and to properly vette all candidates.

  Absolutely no one vetted Obama before he was elected and no one with the RNC seems to care about his sealed by Executive Order past. Sometimes I wonder what hold Obama has over the RNC elite.

  Ask the question in a different way: How many Presidents have sealed their college transcripts and have an army of lawyers guarding them. That alone would make any active mind curious, regardless of one’s political beliefs. For an active mind I mean.
  
  Or how about this, how about agreeing that tax records are relevant when “team Obama” fires all of the known and publicly disclosed tax evaders in his administration? How about them apples?

  The information being sought in both cases is similar. Follow the money and find the dirt. Barry’s college transcripts will probably show he attended school and received assistance as a foreign student. I heard that from an anonymous Democratic source.

  These people are insane. As a small business owner I have to release my tax returns to get a mortgage, how can Romney not have to release his to be President? He’s shooting his whole campaign in the foot by acting like he thinks he’s “above” all the other presidential candidates, including Obama, who release their tax returns. He must be hiding something pretty big. All the Obama conspiracy theorists got Obama to release his long form birth certificate — that’s quid for Obama, now it’s time for quo from Romney.

They won’t drop it. Obama needs to unseal his past he spent millions on to hide and cover up. Obama needs to send back the 1 million to bill maher the d-bag and do at least some of the job the American people are paying him to do.   Romney wont do it. If he did, they would call him a birther. While I agree Romney should have said it, he should have said it three weeks ago. Is his campaign advisors so stupid they think the DNC smelling blood in the water wouldnt press this issue. Instead of attacking for three weeks Romney has been on defense to the worst president in the US history. Romney thought the VP pick would make this go away, I think its backfired. Well that is of course if you believe Romney is actually trying to win, which I dont.
