College Chancellor Takes Stand for Gun Rights After Prof. Threatens to Cancel Class Over Gun-Carrying Students

While the debate over whether the University of Colorado has the right to segregate gun permit-carrying students to separate dorms, the university’s chancellor has just stood up for the rights of those same students to carry guns on campus.

Earlier this week, one professor at the University’s main campus in Boulder threatened to cancel his class if any students showed up legally carrying guns. Physics professor Jerry Peterson declared his stance during a faculty assembly on Monday.

“My own personal policy in my classes is if I am aware that there is a firearm in the class — registered or unregistered, concealed or unconcealed — the class session is immediately canceled,” Peterson said. “I want my students to feel unconstrained in their discussions.”

But on on Wednesday, Chancellor Phil DiStefano squashed the idea in a pointed email to faculty.

“I have the utmost respect for Professor Peterson, who is an old friend and valued colleague, but I want to make clear that if the student carrying the weapon has a concealed-carry permit, the position implied by Professor Peterson’s comments directly violates Colorado law and the operating principles of the campus,” he said according to the Daily Camera.

“On this issue, there can be no ambiguity: all CU-Boulder faculty, as CU and state employees, are expected to teach their assigned courses and to hold classes for all enrolled students,” DiStefano added.

The Daily Camera reports that he also threatened disciplinary action for any professor caught cancelling class because of legal gun owners exercising their right.

The controversy over guns on Colorado campuses came to a head this summer when the state supreme court ruled that schools cannot ban legal, permit-carrying gun owners from carrying their weapons on campus.

“I believe we have taken responsible steps to adhere to the ruling of the Colorado Supreme Court while balancing that with the priority of providing a safe environment for our students, faculty and staff,” DiStefano said last week.

Still, the university’s policy to segregate students in campus housing based on their concealed weapon status has gun rights advocates worried that university is creating a dangerous environment for both those carrying guns and those not.

It’s almost a shame my 4 grandsons aren;t in college. I know where I would send them since all 3 of my sons and their wives have carry permits. These kids are like myself and their mother. Only vacation where your carry permit is recognized. Both of my sons that have kids would like to take them to DC and see the Smithsonian but untill things change where people with valid carry permits are recognized it isn’t gonna happen. Without a gun up there you may be the meal of the day.

WOW! Twice in one day the University of Colorado is finally making sense. Usually known as an Ultra-Liberal school, it’s finally showing they stand for American Values. 1st, Thank you for going against that liberal Peterson, who is a panty waist liberal who doesn’t believe in protection for those who’ve taken classes to be responsible gun owners and can protect themselves. I’d fire him before I’d let him cancel classes.

2nd. I saw the Prediction by 2 of your professors who claim they’ve been right since 1980 predicting the President. This time they pick Romney. YEAH! Almost makes me begin to like CU, go Bufs.

Kicking out that liar, Ward Churchill, for claiming he was an American Indian was the best thing CU could have done ( Harvard should kick out that. Warren woman for claiming the same thing to get ahead of others who may have been more deserving than this ignorant woman.

In the past one hundred years, 56 million people have been murdered by their own governments AFTER their governments took away their right to possess weapons.
China and Russia re just two of those countries who murdered their own.

Allloist, your home is NOT funded and paid for by the tax payers of Colorado, but the Univeristy is. Your comparison holds no water. State law says that if a state funded University wants to ban firearms they have to provide metal detectors at all entrances and provide security guards. So if th professor wants to follow the law, like us concealed carry holders do, he needs to kick out some cash for proper security. Also, what if this professor decided it was in the interest of his class safety to keep a certain skin color out, or not allow “red necks” in his class? Would he have the ultimate say in this as the leader of the class? I think not! Law would not allow that, just like the law is NOT allowing him to ban legal concealed carry holders.

A professor has the right to ask anyone to leave his class. The student has the right to appeal. The professor has the right to demand no recordings. The professor has a great many rights in his classroom.

Please do not cite the instances of massacres by criminals; these are not law abiding Americans. Now, kudos to Chancellor DiStefano for a reasonable contribution to this unfortunate discussion. He understands that ‘concealed’ carry is just that, and is not an issue until Mr Peterson makes it an issue.

This professor probably still thinks the police prevent crimes rather than showing up to investigate afterwards.

Unless a policeman happens to be standing next to you at the convenience store when the would-be robber shows up you’re pretty much on your own for the next 10 to 20 minutes.

It would seem like a scientist would understand the evidence that has been clearly shown many times in the past, that a person legally carrying a concealed firearm tends to save innocent lives rather than take them.

EVERYONE who objects to the legal carrying of firearms needs to watch this video from a survivor of the Luby’s Cafeteria shooting spree in the ’90′s: (Notice how C. Schumer looks like he smells something bad the whole time)

Why is there a case not made, that it is dangerous to be in a gun free zone? I am tired of being insulted by gun control folk, telling us that a legal carry person, would not defend him/her self, other people, and this gun control professor, in the face of a deranged person in the act of shooting people.

Have you noticed they are called “assault rifles”, and not “defense rifles”?, when all but a hand full are actually purchased for defense, or target shooting? “Assault” means “to attack”, but I don’t know anybody who has that intention.

Professor and others, it is a “defense rifle”, and that would be proven, in your classroom, saving lives, should the need arise. The worst shootings around the world, happen in gun free zones. Fact, or not Professor?

no wait, this is good, another communist ‘teacher’ just identified himself in our schools. we’re just waiting for the time to get rid of it. after Jan 2013 all this school communism should CHANGE immediately. if it’s a communist, throw it OUT.
    ==
45 DECLARED GOALS of the COMMUNIST TAKEOVER of AMERICA (1963)
    15. Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States .
    16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.
    17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers’ associations. Put the party line in textbooks.
    18. Gain control of all student newspapers.
    19. Use student riots to foment public protests against programs or organizations which are under Communist attack.
    20. Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, policy-making positions.
    21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures.
    22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to “eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms.”
    and the list goes on…

Boulder is a cesspool, and this professor is one of the turds. The problem is he sees a student with a gun and he wets himself, mostly because it triggers a psychological response that remindes him he isn’t really a man. It reminds him of all those years his mother made him wear dresses and called him Sally.

So the real reason he doesn’t like guns, is a mother complex and his adversion to being called Sally.

      The article said
Still, the university’s policy to segregate students in campus housing based on their concealed weapon status has gun rights advocates worried that university is creating a dangerous environment for both those carrying guns and those not.
That is a half truth what the college did by segregating the gun owners doesn’t place the gun owners in danger fact is it point out which area criminals need to stay out of and which areas have easy targets.

I will not appologize to turds until they appologize for ruining my favorite pair of running shoes. Turds started this, I am just finishing it, besides, who among us will stand up and make “Turds rights” one of their platform issues? Besides the Green party who are made up of turds and POS’s.

      @ gobhusker

I think you are right on track! I know I don’t want “college grads” from today working for or with me!!! First, they’re book smart and experience lacking! They have lots of “thoughts” but no COMMON SENSE! They want to “start at the top” rather than PAYING THEIR DUES!

Sorry, give me the kid that was raised and helped on a farm and I will show you someone who understand the need for real work and the rewards of real work, personal and for the good of the equipment and others in his care and for the good of humanity in general.

Keep the degree and give me the personal experience. Anyone can teach themselves what they need to know to get ahead in REAL WORK!

I’m really beginning to wonder why some call them self educated? Research shows that “Gun Free” zones are where criminals do their business, no threat from the unarmed Law Abiding Citizens.

We must stop these control-freak, child abusers, at every turn. They have destroyed education and generations of young minds. We need to change the man hating, educational complex back to a merit based, world leader in all things academic. The frauds and grant thieves need to follow the rules or hit the road.

The time is right. The black racist fraud obama has given these cretins an excuse to expose themselves, and they have. We now know that from kindergarten to MBA these academic frauds are only looking to turn our children into useful idiot, asexual drones. Emasculate the male from kindergarten (if he survives the baby killers) and promote the illiterate, cruel types. It’s on we taxpaying adults to protect our children, or not. One by one we will eliminate these devils, just as one by one, we deport illegal criminals. Hide under the covers and you get what you deserve. Become able to defend yourself and lead, follow, or get out of the way.
