Severe Weather to Delay Part of GOP Convention Until Tuesday

(The Blaze/AP) — The Republican National Convention will briefly convene Monday before taking a recess until Tuesday afternoon because of severe weather, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said Saturday.

“Our first priority is ensuring the safety of delegates, alternates, guests, members of the media attending the Republican National Convention, and citizens of the Tampa Bay area,” Priebus explained.

“After consulting with Governor Scott, NOAA and local emergency management officials, we are optimistic that we will begin an exciting, robust convention that will nominate the Romney-Ryan ticket.”

Mitt Romney weighed in on Twitter:

CNN adds:

GOP officials expect 50,000 people to attend the convention where Mitt Romney will officially accept his party’s presidential nomination and make the final turn to the November Election.

The delay was brought about because Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to be west of Tampa in the Gulf of Mexico early Monday morning – the first day of the week long event.

Priebus is expected to give more details on the modified schedule shortly.  According to the National Review, his main concern is “severe transportation difficulties due to sustained wind and rain.”

Apparently, organizers may attempt to squeeze Monday’s speakers into the remaining days.

Priebus’ memo concludes: “We have an experienced team that will ensure changes are operationally smooth and create as little disruption as possible.  The most important concern is safety, but our Convention program will proceed.”

Russ Schriefer, a senior strategist for the Romney campaign, assured: “We will absolutely be able to get our message out.”

This is a breaking story.  Updates will be added.

In Ft. lauderdale the rain has been a drizzle with a few short spurts of strong rain. Drove to Miami for dinner. The hype kept everyone home. Planning to return to Miami for a birthday luncheon tomorrow.

      Kid,
The Republican platform leaves a lot to be desired for us Constitutionalists. Some of their planks are good, but it is what they leave out that is troubling. IF the RNC were concerned with true conservatism and Liberty, they would not have strong-armed and stole the Ron Paul delegates. Those delegates were harassed into switching over to Romney. It is this kind of behaviour that casts a long shadow on everything the Republicans say and try to make us believe. Obama certainly needs to go. In fact, he should have been impeached and thrown out a long time ago. Since the Republicans now claim at this late date that they will “consider” a return to a gold standard, screams of a placating ingenuousness.
People need to look at the Romney/Ryan voting records That is where you will find the real truth about what will happen under a Romney/Ryan presidency.
I am a life long registered Republican. But never again will I vote for a Republican-in-name-only. I love America and freedom for the citizenry. Prove to me Mr. Romney, Mr. Ryan, that you are for Liberty and small government. Perhaps I will change my mind. Liberty is the # 1 right that we are losing. Sometimes I think they want it that way.
John Quincy Adams said, and I am paraphrasing,” To have Liberty is to have power”.
And to re-post Benjamin Franklin’s sentiment: ” Those who give up Liberty for security deserve neither.”

Always the followers, the Republicans never lead.

Taking their cue from Vice President Biden, who canceled his Florida visit, the Republicans are curtailing some of their convention events.

The Repulican decision was also influenced by the Democratic convention planners who announced a shortened convention months ago.

I hope the Republicans are on the DNC mailing list so they can find out what to do next.

Some people think that whenever a conservative hears a liberal’s point of view, they have to pick the opposite stance. This is incorrect.

We listen to ideas, mull them over, then choose the best option.

If the Democrats had more good ideas, we would follow them as well.

He sent his “people” to Hawaii and then announces that we won’t believe what he has discovered about the birth certificate of Obama, and then………..nothing. Maybe liar of the year.

“A severe thunderstorm (derecho) knocked out power at the Republican convention in Detroit in 1980. That storm produced a 103 mph wind gust on the beach near Benton Harbor and 75 mph winds in Detroit. Ronald Reagan was nominated at that convention and proceeded to win a 44-state landslide in November 1980 over Jimmy Carter, who struggled with low or no economic growth, high inflation and interest rates, rising unemployment and intermittent energy crises. Reagan won a 49-state landslide in 1984, winning 59% of the popular vote in that election.”

But, hey, I guess if you aren’t used to it it would scare you a bit. I did see some insiring stories on our local station, there are people loading sand bags and taking them into neighborhoods and distributing them to the elderly and the people without the abillity to get out to get them. Unfortunately, we had a report of some men taking the sand bags out and trying to sell them too. I just hope the police take action because in my opinion that is an aspect of profiteering and profiteering is against the law. (the bags and sand are provided free from the city of Homestead).

I prayed that the pink tents would FLOAT away along with the progressive free food! YAY! I hope we don’t miss some great speakers, though. That would be about the worst that could happen! **ROMNEY/RYAN 2012**

      @ EQUALJUSTICE

I prayed the storm would stay away from Tampa and other shores…just disappear
      and do no damage!

And, from THE-MONK’S POST BELOW…looks like Tampa PD is getting rid of AND
prepared for the OWS KOOKS! :)

This goes to prove the Republicans have a weather machine. First they wanted to get rid of all the blacks in New Orleans, and now, just to mess up Joe Bidens trip and OWS’s plans, the hit Tampa with a Hurricane, just to be able to push the start date back and confuse the left. I bet during the DNC, you will see North Carolina get hit with the worst blizzard in the last 200 years, followed up by one heck of a heatwave. Which of course will give everyone attending a cold. Sneaky, sneaky Repubs. They are doing all of this and causing the drought just to make Obama look bad.

Hi Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra,
“This goes to prove the Republicans have a weather machine.”

Yep, and he lives in Tampa and goes by the name “The-Monk”. : )

Isaac will turn closer to Tampa and the path will move from away from Gadsden, Al. and move East towards Atlanta. (Sorry Atlanta)

      Hi Monk
So I gather you and RJJ are getting together to direct Isaac towards Atlanta. Obviously not Braves fans.

Hi Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra,

No, I’ve been sending requests for rain in Gadsden for RJJ for about 2 months now. The weather in Gadsden has been much cooler. For the last month I’ve been requesting extremely heavy rains for the RNC to “flush out” the protesters. Looks like Isaac is heading for Gadsden now so I’m requesting a change in course. LOL : )

      Hey Monk:
Did you check out my post under the Obama/Romney comment on Armstrongs death. I tried to go for, What would Obama say, without the teleprompter.

DARMOK AND JALAD AT TANAGRA, must have borrowed it from China. Okay, think about it….do you remember the official Chinese Government response when asked what would happen if the weather took a turn for the worse during their last Olympics?
It was to not worry, they could control the weather.
Gotta stop playing Coast to Coast AM on the radio all night.
