‘Blatantly Homophobic’: Furor Erupts After Mormon-Owned TV Station Refuses to Air New NBC Show About a Gay Couple
A furor is erupting over a Utah television station’s refusal to air an upcoming NBC comedy called “The New Normal.” The station, KSL-TV, is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The program focuses upon a single mother who is planning to be a surrogate for a homosexual couple. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), among others, has been voicing its anger with the decision to ban the show.
“These days, families come in all forms — single dads, double moms, sperm donors, egg donors, one-night-stand donors… It’s 2012 and anything goes,” an official description of “The New Normal” reads. Information about the pilot adds more: “With successful careers and a committed, loving partnership, Bryan and David are missing only one thing: a baby. Could Goldie be just the surrogate mother they’re searching for?”
After viewing the first episode, which will premiere nationally on September 11, CEO of Bonneville International, the parent company of KSL-TV, said that the company deems the show “inappropriate” for its viewers (One Million Moms, a conservative group, has also targeted the show).
“After viewing the pilot episode of ‘The New Normal,’ we have made the decision to keep it off our fall schedule,” Simpson said in an interview with Deseret News. ”For our brand, this program simply feels inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family viewing time.”
Watch the program’s trailer, below:
GLAAD president Herndon Graddick isn’t pleased with the decision, calling KSL and its leaders “deeply out of touch…with the rest of the country.” In addition to dismissing the station’s charge that the show is contrary to family values, Graddick also invited KSL to sit down with the gay rights organization to talk its issues out.
“We invite Jeff Simpson to sit down with GLAAD and local LGBT families,” Graddick said in a statement. “We know that if he would, he would see that not only are our families normal, but by citing ‘crude and rude’ content and refusing to affirm LGBT families, KSL and Mr. Simpson are sending a dangerous message to Utah. They should make that right.”
Actress Ellen Barkin, who plays the lead role in “The New Normal” is also targeting KSL, calling the station’s decision “blatantly homophobic.” On Twitter, she also pleaded with LDS to “change,” writing (spelling kept in tact) “There r Mormons who struggle with their church’s stance on gay rights..among other issues.Chruch proved capable of change ie, polygamy. Hope?”
Over the weekend, she also wrote, “Shame on u @kslcom not airing @NBCTheNewNormal So L&O SVU (rape & child murder) is ok? But loving gay couple having a baby is inappropriate?”
So far, Bonneville International isn’t bending. This isn’t the first time KSL-TV has prevented a show from airing. Last year, the short-lived progrm “The Playboy Club” was also held back from airing on the station.

‘anything goes’…?!…Yes, it is 2012, but this is nothing more than propaganda and deception, sodomites are NOT ‘the new normal’…history speaks for itself. If this program airs, WE the people have 3 choices…block the stations that carry such shows, turn the channel, or shut the TV off…

Seems like subliminal messaging to me, by calling a show that is anything but “Normal” normal it put the thought in your head that this is what other consider to be normal. Which is a lie seeing as how most Americans don’t agree with this at all.

Hollywood has a history of using names like this. They also like to use names that make light of Bible tearms and names.
Will and Grace is an example. In the Bible Will is mans choice, and Grace is the means of salvation through faith. In the popular show, Will acted gay, and Grace actled like a slut.
Crossing Jordan is another example of making light of a Bible term.

Posted on August 27, 2012 at 2:09pmThe New Normal…..according to PC Bolsheviks. NBC is just a propaganda machine. It would fit right in airing shows in Sweden or Denmark. NBC wants to make the US just like Europe…..ripe for conquest by Muslims who see European/American men running around with “man purses” and speedos. They know Western culture is weak and can’t hold much longer which is why they want to conquer us. Well that and the fact that we have troops over in their countries trying to spread political correctness on them, they don’t like it.

I suggest you read Marketing of Evil. It will describe the ingenious plan that this TV program fits into. That plan should actually be a Harvard Business School case. Brilliantly conceived ….. including the name change.
I suggest you start by, in every instance, return to calling homosexuals by the proper term ….. homosexual. Lesbians are either bi- or homosexuals. Putting lipstick on a pig …….. its still a pig ……. metaphorically speaking. They can call themselves ice cream cones, I don’t care. But they are still homosexuals. This has nothing to do with hate or ‘phobia’. I doubt few of us fear homosexuals.
I’m waiting for the restorative justice crowd to manipulate the dialogue so that one day we are demonized for not allowing Charles Manson out of prison. Too funny.

However, I do recognize propaganda when I see it. The attempt of the liberal media to brand this extremely small minority of “family lifestyles” as “normal” is completely ridiculous. I’m sure that everyone involved with the tv show is very talented and I wish them the best of luck. However, the message that they are giving is a message that doesn’t sell in all markets. KSL doesn’t believe that it’s constituency will watch it enough to make a profit from the advertisement sales.

In the article, it says that the LDS church is out of touch with America. Why does a church have to change with the fads and immoralities of society? Seems to me that a church should be a bastion of what is moral, not changing everytime someone comes up with another definition of normal. These days, it is hard to even find a church that openly condemns sodomy. I’m glad that they have some courage and strong definitions of what is moral.

Posted on August 28, 2012 at 1:22pmIt’s good to know that at least one TV station in the country still has a moral compass that works. The New Normal?,,,,,no, just the same old sin (yes , I said sin), dressed up and trotted out for another go around, in hopes that they can drag a few more over to their way of thinking. The goal of the entertainment media especially in the last 30 years, has been to blur the lines between right and wrong, good and evil, redefine the family unit, exclude God from the public view.and marginalize Christian ethics and faith and push the progressive agenda. Shows like Friends and this New Normal, glorify perversion, Reality shows nudge us toward loss of privacy and personal dignity (think Survivor, Sister Wives, Housewives, face book, Nielson surveys,Google tracking etc), Murphy Brown, Two and a Half Men, undermine the core family unit. LA Law and any of the SVU series push a liberal, progressive political agenda.(anti 2nd amendment rights) Most of the Discovery Channel stuff is anti God, humanism and pro global warming, Mother Earth garbage. Major companies like J,C.Penny and Starbucks have jumped on the side of perversion to make a buck. Companies like Quiksilver , Levi, Microsoft, Coke etc, have jumped on the global warming bandwagon with their 1% for the planet programs giving a portion of their profits to a group whose end goal is to end capitalism. (how stupid can we get!) People really need to wake up and use the brains they were given!!

32 states have had ballot initiatives where traditional marriage was upheld.
And in those states where gay marriage is approved, it has been done against the wishes of the people by having a judge intervene.
Most Gays only know how to sue and spew hate against “breeders”. I say most because there are gays who also don’t care about this issue and are mad at the gays who are only making matters worse by ticking people off (I know, because I have spoken to some that I know).
As far as anti-Semitism goes, it has nothing to do with religion. It has everything to do with ignorance.

The most intolerant people in the world are those who are preaching about tolerance, you don’t agree with them then you are an enemy that must be destroyed. Those of us who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints believe in being very tolerant and kind to all people. You on the other hand are a hateful and mean-spirited person to say such things about my church and its members. The “Mormon” church has only 14 million members but our church provides more emergency relief to stricken areas worldwide than ANY other church. Our active members do not need government welfare becaues we take care of those in need and we believe very strongly in self-reliance. We have no paid clergy and volunteer hundreds of millions of hours of charitible service annually. We are also very nice, normal, funny, and interesting people. It just so happens that we LDS members don’t like shows like this gay promo so KSL knows that very few people in their market will watch it. They would get more viewers with a rerun of the Office or something. They know that they will get serious flak from their viewers with Christian morals if they air the show so they are making a smart business decision and not catering to the (very) small but (overtly) vocal minority.

But the name “The NEW Normal” Being gay is anything but “normal” now I am looking at this from a purely Scientific view… IF an animal in nature is completely gay (does homosexual describe animals that only want to mate members of the same sex?) then how does it reproduce? it doesn’t and its genes die off. If you are gay because you choose to be be or because you can’t help it then fine thats OK, but genetically there is something wrong with you it is not your fault, but scientifically you were not programmed to be Gay you were programmed to reproduce and multiply and to do that you have to have Sex with a member of the Opposite Sex…. Posted on August 27, 2012 at 12:10pm@Joe: A couple of points for you. There IS an objective definition for “normal” and it is illustrated by what is termed the “normal distribution curve” (http://bit.ly/cGjdJ9). It is easy to see that, while being less frequent in the population, an outlier may still represent the “normal” spectrum of a society. In fact, in almost anything that can be counted, you will find extremes at one side and also at the other, all of them part of “normal” distribution.
Additionally, there is not evolutionary principle that prohibits homosexuality. Evolutionary forces act upon the GENE and not upon the INDIVIDUAL. It is perfectly reasonable to suggest that a biological factor for homosexuality exists. Often, the evolutionary stable state requires that some members of a population sacrifice fecundity in favor of other benefits for the group. For a better understanding of these things, I would recommend “The Selfish Gene” by R. Dawkins.

If Homosexuality is genetic, then we would expect to see near to a 100% of where one twin is homosexual that the other would be also. Instead we see 11% which is close to zero.
Also, I have seen homosexual friendly poster argue that homosexuality is similar to Tay-Sachs disease, sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis & other genetic conditions. In the cases Tay-Sachs, sickle cell anemia & cystic fibrosis we try to treat those disease. We treat all genetic disease except homosexuality if indeed it is genetic.
The second line of defense for the homosexual LOBBY is to say it is epigenetic. As one researcher pointed, epigenetic problems are easier to correct than genetic ones. He likened it to the difference to writing in pencil to writing in ink. The 11% of twins who became gay might have been influenced by epigentic or hormonal factors. Or it may have been childhood environment. What we know is that the gay LOBBY does not want it to be treated at all because they want the numbers.

Dr Charles Socarides has noted that in the 1970′s the APA (American Psychiatric Assoc) removed homosexuality from it’s list of psychologica disorders not because clinical research demanded it, but because social lobby groups demanded it..throwing away decades of work in the process.
By all means tell me what’s “normal” or acceptable about homosexuals making up over 61% new cases of HIV in this country each year while the comprise less than 2% of the population? They are an over-represenation of at least 44%. Tell me what’s “normal” or acceptable about that?
Furthermore, strict homosexuality as it appears in the human species doe not occur in nature. What appears to be homosexual behaviour is actually shows of dominance and dispute resolution. The animals go back to mating with the other sex when their instinct to mate and couple takes over.
Even those penguins homosexuals like to tout can be made to mate with females. Strict homosexuality is a psychological aberration only found in the human species.

Please get your information correct.
Not long after Jesus Christ’s death, the Apostles found themselves battle against “certain individuals” of the faith who were trying to alter the message of Christ and inject their own beliefs and perspectives. One such group that would soon catch on were the Gnostics, who believed in completely different version of Christianity.
Finally, in 325 AD, a council of Catholic bishops convened in Nicaea in Bithynia by order of Emporer Constantine I. The main purpose was to determine what writings could be attributed to the main Apostles and which ones had little, if any, historical proof of their authenticity.
Also of note: Emporer Constantine I did not try to get rid of all pagan religions. His passage of the Edict of Milan (along with support from Licinius) in 313, abolished the massive persecution of Christians in all of the Roman Empire. Constantine had a long history of allowing the various cultures to keep their religions and arts. This one one of the main reasons why he was extremely popular with the various peoples and tribes throughout the United Kingdom and the Germanic lands.
As for the rest of your postings, I generally agree, only with one main contention. The LGBT community has always based their conflict with mainstream America with the premise that sexual orientation should not define marriage.
For me and for at least 31 other states who believe marriage is between and man and a woman, it does.

Someone with the NAS said they are looking into the currently levels of fluoride but as of this date cannot make the case. But they are still looking into it. So for 60 or so years (3 generations) we have been calling people who didn’t want fluoride in their water kooks. It appears that the people pushing fluoride were pushing something unnecessary & harmful. How many people get their water out of taps anymore. Likely as not they filter their water. Posted on August 27, 2012 at 8:50pm@AvengerKirk & Walkabout: I don’t mean to “shoot & scoot”, I had to go to work. It is certainly not an established fact that homosexuality is not genetic, we are decades away from understanding what the proteins our DNA codes for actually do in our bodies. One of you cited a twin study, but there have been several. Here are some that support further study on the epigenetic nature of sexuality: (http://abouthomosexuality.com/policy-org-twins.pdf). I honestly don’t think it really matters, I fully support any adult’s right to choose their legal and consensual partners. I don’t know that the AIDS numbers you propose are truly accurate, such things are bound to be embroiled in politics, but even if they are, I don’t believe that they are a direct indication of any problem with the gay lifestyle. Such things tend to have many factors and right off the top of my head I would suppose that high risk behavior tends to follow strong societal pressures to remain hidden. I don’t doubt for a moment that we will begin to see see a dramatic drop in AIDS cases as homosexuality becomes more mainstream. I am really sorry that this part of our culture makes you uncomfortable, but we live in a free society and that requires us to be mature enough to live with things that we don’t necessarily agree with. I am not a force for evil, literal or figuratively, and I make no claims to wisdom greater than I possess.

Posted on August 27, 2012 at 11:17pmCalm Voice Of Reason: There is a lot of evidence to say that you are not born gay. One example mentioned above in a comment was the prevalence of homosexuality with regards to twins. If one twin identifies as gay, then only about 11% of the time does the other one as well. Also there is a much higher prevalence of homosexuality among those whom are abused (physically, sexually, or verbally) or bullied as children then among anyone who was not. I can’t remember the number (I think it was 75% more likely, but don’t quote me on that: it could have just as easily been 25%) exactly, but it was a significant correlation. There is no significant evidence that genetics play any major role in orientation. Also the sudden prevalence of homosexuality indicates that it is influenced more by culture than by genetics. Also, it is highly likely that genetics would normally turn away from homosexuality due to evolution. First, if it were a genetic marker it would be far rarer than it is and it would be more focused along certain ethnic groups/family lines. Second, considering that it has been a death sentence for most of recorded human history to be gay, it is likely that that gene would be very rare. Third, due to the previously short life spans of humans before modern medicine, anyone not actively seeking an opposite sex partner is less likely to have had children. Giving even more reason for any homosexual genetics to be rare.

essential ways, it is off course in my understanding of scripture, HOWEVER, their

strong emphasis on family and CLEAN living) is certainly admirable.
Can you imagine if the (supposedly) 80% of Christians stood up for no more glorification

If more stations refused to air this type of trash, NBC wouldn’t be pushing their agenda and trying to force people into the “new normal” that they want to make. If people in Utah decide to watch this trash, they have other means – the internet and cable, which is also the market. In this case I think some Children might be “hurt” if they start watching shows that promote a life-style like this. Just like the porno mags that have to be covered so Children don’t accidentally see the the photos on the covers when they go into stores.
I vote to protect the Children over a total freedom for “anything goes” for all ages.

Posted on August 27, 2012 at 3:41pmHi Justangry,
I agree. The issue I see is what happens when Children visit a friends house where the parents have an “anything goes” mentality? Sure, you should know the other parents but sometimes the other parents hide what they allow their Children to do when other parents are around. I speak from my own Childhood memories.

Always good to see you.
The attempt to tie KSL to Romney was thin, at best.
You’ll notice that KSL did not say NO ONE should watch it, they just felt it was inappropriate for THEIR audience; and I believe they are right. They did not say it was inappropriate for ALL audiences.
The church allows people to do as they please. They teach an ideal and expect you to reach for it, but they recognize that you may choose not to.
I believe Romney will do the same: Teach an american ideal and allow you to pursue it.
Again, I tip my hat to you for recognizing the fact that there is no basis in this article for tying the ‘Mormons’ and KSL with government censorship.

Posted on August 27, 2012 at 4:15pm@Just – Sure, you’re responsible for your children but don’t you think other’s should be responsible for what they are in charge of? If you owned a business and were suddenly told to sell something you disagreed with wouldn’t you want to have the right to say no? Good for this station for standing up for what they believe in, at least somebody is doing it.

Posted on August 27, 2012 at 9:45pm@Brother_Ed, Hey man, I didn’t really catch that they tried to associate this station with Romney but yeah that’s kind of lame. You have much more faith in Romney than I have, but it has nothing to do with his religion.
@Kyle, I had a knee jerk reaction to the story. The station can do what it wants.

I really only have ‘hope’ in Romney.
I stick to my original premise that the press has done a masterful job painting conservatives as mean spirited and uncaring. Add to that the fact that the conservatives themselves weren’t enacting conservative policies, and you wonder why people don’t trust us.
If we can enact a few of these policies, show the people they work, then they will be more apt to try more.
I think Romney has a better chance of winning. I also think we need to keep the pressure on him.

Posted on August 27, 2012 at 11:39amWonderful! I congratuate KSL for their decision to keep the airwaves clear of this crap. I stopped watching all broadcast TV in May 2008 and just recently stopped paying for TV altogether. There are only a few stations that have anything worth watching. This country is under the judgment of God, in case you haven’t noticed. Unless we turn from our wicked ways, immorality, corruption and greed, and stop defying the Creator, this country will be lost.

Posted on August 27, 2012 at 11:38amI’m really tired of the pressure of the media to include ever increasing numbers of LGTB characters in virtually every show on TV. The name of the show is the tell ‘The New Normal’ is exactly what they hope to accomplish. And virtually all of the LGTB characters are loving and practically angelic. Come on, in real life they are truly ‘just like other people’ including being just as mean and nasty as the rest of us.

What kind of lying troll are you? I can guarantee that you have never met an active Member of my church that is intolerant. We in the LDS church ARE Christian, we love the Savior Jesus Christ as much as the members af any other church and we follow his teachings incuding those that teach tolerance. I personally hate the gay lifestyle, but I treat my patients who are gay just as kindly and nicely as any other patients. I even treat liberals kindly! HAHAHA Anyway, you are very ignorant, hateful and dishonest. If you want to see how horrible Mormons are, spend 5 minutes on this site and pray about what you see. Ask God if what you saw on this site is good.

No thanks, that’s what wrong with politics, period, these days. Just because gays call gay normal doesn’t make it so and you should not bend to their whims…. Posted on August 27, 2012 at 11:32amThe previews for this show look disgusting. It is trying to normalize living arrangements where children are subjugated to their parents’ sexual lifestyles, instead of being raised in two-parent, heterosexual homes that give them the best opportunity for healthy development.
Sick.

Posted on August 27, 2012 at 11:49amI agree with Hornsfan – this preview *is* disgusting. Of course, within the preview, the female lead says”…a family is a family, and love is love…” – this is a nice attempt to frame the argument.
Who *wouldn’t* be all for family and love. I mean, isn’t that what you right wingers are always preaching, so, ergo, you *have* to like this show…
Well, I *don’t* have to like this show. In fact, I don’t have to agree that “The New Normal” *isn’t* a creepy show about a decidedly *non normal* lifestyle.
Also, the title – Come on, the title alone is revolting. **If** this is the new normal, then what is the traditional male/female/child family now? Old? Passe? The past – make way for the future?…which is what the pervert left would like us all to believe.
I predict this show will fail on the title alone (unless NBC tries to cram it down our throats regardless of the ratings) and further more it will help to damage democrats and Obama come election time, if it is still running by then.
One more thing – the people in it set my teeth on edge. Did whomever did the casting, try to cast annoying people in it?
