92-Year-Old WWII Vet Shoots and Kills Home Intruder: ‘As Soon as He Got Inside, It Was All Over’

A 92-year-old World War II veteran shot and killed a suspected robber who attempted to break into his Kentucky home Monday morning. Two other men believed to be involved in the botched home invasion are lucky to have escaped with their lives and are now behind bars, WLWT reports.

According to police, 24-year-old Lloyd Maxwell broke into the elderly man’s basement after 2 a.m. and tried to enter the first floor of the home in Verona, Ky. The homeowner, identified as Earl Jones, said he was startled awake by the noise coming from his basement and grabbed his .22 caliber rifle and steadied his aim on the basement door as he heard the sound of footsteps creeping up the basement stairs.

When the intruder kicked in the door, Jones fired one fatal shot into Maxwell’s chest, police said. After firing the single shot, the homeowner called his neighbor, who then contacted the police.

By the time police arrived, the burglary suspect had gotten away. However, soon after arriving at Jones’ home, law enforcement in a nearby county received a call about a man who had been shot close by. Kenton County police responded to the call and found Maxwell dead inside a 2011 Chevrolet Impala with two other unharmed men.

The other two men were brought in for questioning by the Boone County Sheriff’s Office. During the interrogation, police say both men admitted to being involved in the bungled burglary at Jones’ home.

Ryan Dalton, 22 and Donnie Inabnit, 20, both of Dry Ridge, Ky., are charged with second-degree burglary (complicity) and tampering with physical evidence, WLWT reports.

Jones will not face charges in the shooting.

“Somebody got into the basement, this is a full basement and I was on the bed fixing to go to bed,” Jones told WPCO. “And I’m very sensitive, I was in the military, you have to have good ears. And I heard something just as I sat down, ‘clonk, clonk, clonk,’ and I said well somebody is in the basement and he’s going to come upstairs. So I heard him when he was coming up the steps, I had the gun so I was sitting there when he opened the door.”

“As soon as he got inside, it was all over,” the veteran added.

Jones told officials that Monday morning’s incident was the third time his home has been broken into, WPCO reports. He said Monday morning’s incident should serve as a warning to any future robbers who want to target him.

“I’ve been robbed so much in the past five weeks, I said it’s going to have to be a message to the people. The only way you going to stop this is you have to leave one laying in the grass. That’s the only way you’re [going to] stop it,”  Jones said.

look at that, only took one shot, not 46. And with a .22 no less. Too bad the police departments around this country can’t seem to produce the same quality.

It takes a ninety year old and one shot with a 22 to do what it takes 6 police officers and 46 shots to do. Way to go guy.

      I love it!

      Blood for Earl!

I find it ironic that Tom Brokaw praises “The Greatest Generation,” yet his leftist political leanings betray everything that those great Americans stood for. Earl Jones is a shining example of the kind of man who made that generation so great, and it is a crying shame that the liberal media have completely missed the point and continue to foster a nation of nitwits through leftist lapdog journalism.

The OSS, CIA, Israel & mafia all used .22 to terminate enemy’s
World War II. Several notable weapon designs were developed and used by the allies in this conflict. One of the most famous and long lived was the High Standard HDM. The pistol was developed for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and was used by its operatives throughout WW II. It was based on the High Standard .22 caliber pistol, fitted with an integral sound suppressor

A guy was killed and while he was doing the wrong thing thats something that never should be applauded. For those of us that have seen war we know that life is precious, and taking someones life is not something you can just brush off like it is nothing. I’m sure this old man isnt sitting at home patting himself on the back saying yippie ki oh. 1) You and I win because justice has been served
      2) The old man wins because he is alive

      4) All future thugs that might now think twice about getting into a life of crime win as well.

      Geez ppl, she said SHOTGUN!!!

My guess is that the reporter either does not know the difference between a SHOTGUN AND A 22 CAL, or he had a pretty close shot without collateral damage to the walls and blood all over the place. A chest shot with a SHOTGUN would have killed him instantly and there would be not time for his pals to take him to the ER.

Fire that girl, or take her to a better school than where she came from. Better yet, get her some shooting lessons so she can carry. SHEEZ. And keep her from looking at her phone during the stand up. I am ashamed for both the commentators on this site and the girl reporter.

If the perps had been black it would have been Mr. Jones’ mug shot pictured here, and Herr Holder and his merry band of DOJ civil rights attorneys would be preparing to draw and quarter him for the benefit of the NBPP. Stupid is as stupid does and knows no skin color.

Mr. Jones reverted back to his training and he knew that little .22 bullet would be going downrange to CBM once the perp hit the first step. Only the coroner knows the extent of the actual damage, but we know it was enough.

Thank you, Mr. Jones, for streamlining the legal system.

You are absolutely right! A similar incident happened to a WW11 Veteran here in Tulsa. The perps were black. Only one is in custody, btw. The veteran in that invasion was 90 yrs old and his wife was 85. He was deaf and had been suffering from food poisoning. He and his wife were beaten. His wife was raped. She died the next day. He died a few weeks later and the coroner listed it as natural causes. Their names were Bob and Nancy Strait.

To those who didn’t get all the fax, yes he shot him with a .22 and it wasn’t a lucky shoot, he shot him in the heart. What they left out was he also had 90 head of cattle rusteled along with a TV and his other gun from four other times. He was mad and scared for his life, so he waited till the guy kicked the door in and put one center mass, right in the heart. IMHO he is my kind of man, proof of why we need the 2nd admendment.

That’s why the mob used to kill with a shot behind the ear. The bullet usually doesn’t exit so very little blood and leaves the brain like scrabbled eggs. Yo Vinnie….yous do good work…badda…..bing.

@Soundtracktowar, Thanks for your service. I do have a question for you with regards to your comment about not taking a kill lightly. Does the evilness of the individual change your feelings at some point? If someone broke into my house, I have a wife and son to protect. If they broke in and my truck is in the driveway, I assume they mean to eliminate me and my family. With that in mind, do you STILL allow the death of that intruder to weigh heavy on you? What if these intruders have broken into other homes, raped wives, even killed others, and your home is now their final stop in life. Eliminating that intruder means saving the lives of others in your neighborhood. Is that not something to cheer and celebrate? I understand there are complexities in the battlefield, being up against an enemy that consists of young men, even teenagers, that are forced to fight a battle they do not want to be apart of. Here in the states, these punks who break in and steal are another thing entirely.

I have zero sympathy for a willing criminal that gets killed in the act. Families will be that much safer, home owners insurance will have that many less claims to deal with, and tax payers will not have to worry about another bottom feeding punk living in the tax payer funded prison system.

He was smart. A larger caliber, especially a rifle fired inside would have taken any hearing that he had left. A Garand inside? If you were lucky you would be wearing a hearing aide the rest of your life.

Largest brown bear (coastal big brothers of the grizzly) ever killed on record, killed by a .22 rifle. Shot placement is everything. I can put a shot from any distance indoors in the fatal T with a .22, save my hearing and follow up in the same spot.

Number 1 gun caliber used by murder for hires or assassination/execution… .22

.22 is perfect for a 92 year old. No recoil to contend with an he may have been shooting that 22 for the last 75 years.

Nope .22 is just fine, In fact it’s my primary defense weapon, firing anything bigger indoors is bad, I also load mine with sub-sonic ammo for even more report reduction. 1 shot center of chest or head almost always lethal.

It’s mighty nice that Mr Jones isn’t going to be charged. What would he be charged with, self defense? Maybe if he lived in some liberal workers paradise like NY, NJ, or IL where guns are considered to be wicked and evil.

Good work, and good that the punks weren’t stoked up on meth or something else that would have made him “painless”.

Another happy ending. Thank you, Mr Jones, for your service. Yours was the greatest generation. Thank you for the lesson in personal defense as well. The only time that animals understand they have limits on their behavior is when someone stands up to them. Too bad the other two knuckle dragging losers didn’t get the lesson as well.

The police couldn’t prevent this and if it was happening at several places all near or about the same time and you were one of the victims of a criminal act you’d be, injured or dead as these types become more and more emboldened

When you are a crime victim, the police are only minutes away. I’ll lay odds that those punks are the same ones that wew previously in his house. Criminals return to the scene.

My Uncle Clifford was an MP who mopped up after Patton’s tanks roared through a town on their way to the Rhine. He wrote Aunt Margaret (upon General Patton’s insistence) that he had to kill 8 Germans on mop-up that day and that he would not write again. He did not write her again, never talked about where he was or what he did, but he did stay married to her until her death. He died 7 years ago and we found all his metals and citations afterward. Wish we had know what a true hero he was before he died.

Yep, reporters need to actually have a broader base of general knowledge. Most are pretty ignorant outside of their specialty. So, which is it? A shotgun or a .22 rifle? That’s like saying a Cessna 150 is the same as a 747.
