Gay Singer Jennifer Knapp Details Her Sexuality, Leaving Christian Music Behind & Why She ‘Tried to Undo’ Her Religion

Ex Christian Singer Jennifer Knapp Discusses Her Sexuality & Music Career

A decade ago, Christian singer Jennifer Knapp was riding high with a successful music career, a Grammy nomination and numerous Dove Awards under her belt. But, in 2003, she turned her back on her evangelical fame and virtually disappeared. Years later, Knapp is back — but with a few surprises.

She’s now an out lesbian who, in the minds of many, is starkly different from the girl who once performed and toured with her famed Jesus-inspired tunes. TheBlaze recently interviewed Knapp to discuss her career and her shockingΒ transformation.

KNAPP DISCUSSES HER BACKGROUND & CAREER

The singer explained that she had never aspired to be a rock star. In fact, she said that prior to entering the faith-based music industry, she had little, if any, knowledge about it. Her journey, though accidental, did, indeed, lead her to monumental music success. It wasn’t until Knapp went to college that she was exposed to intense religious adherence.

As a child, she recalls growing up in a somewhat non-religious family. When the singer turned 18, she said she “made a concerted effort” to truly begin exploring Christianity. While she remembers being “really inspired to follow this mystery of Christ,” the singer said that it took her quite a bit of time to figure it all out.

“In evangelical terms, I accepted Christ and then it was like six or eight months before I was deciding about how much I was going to engage in the church community,” she recalled.

As thisΒ transformationΒ was taking place, Knapp also began exploring her musical talents. Little did she know that her journey would be fast-paced and that it would lead her to heights she never intended to reach.

A fact some may not know about Knapp is that she didn’t come to Christianity with a clean slate (then again, many faithful share a similar experience). She described herself as “a woman of the world” prior toΒ becomingΒ a Jesus follower, and explained that she had “a lot of sexual experience, drank [and] smoked” in the time leading up to her conversion.

“I was all the things that were preached against,” she said.

All that changed, of course, when her career commenced.

Considering her level of fame and this startling decision to leave it all behind back in 2002, naturally, there are many questions worth asking Knapp. Among them: What was her reasoning for quitting her music career?

WHY KNAPP LEFT CHRISTIAN MUSIC BEHIND

While some may assume that her sexuality played a role, Knapp is adamant about proclaiming that this simply wasn’t the case. Instead, she said she found herself exhausted and in need of a break. The exit process wasn’t easy.

“I spent a year trying to extricate myself from Christian music — I had a really tough schedule and I was tired,” she explained, going on to say that she also realized that her unconventional views were creating issues for her career. “Any time that I would express my own theological view in public thatΒ didn’tΒ fit the evangelical mold, I was finding it was making my job difficult.”

So, Knapp divorced herself from Christian music.

“Nobody does that. It just didn’t make sense to anyone,” she said of her decision. “It took me a year to clear my schedule — and to convince people that I was not going to work again.”

TheBlaze did push her a bit on the homosexuality front, asking her to describe if, at all, the decision to leave faith-based music was based on her realization that she was attracted to women. She maintained that it was not and that other issues forced her to take time away.

“It’s really important to me that the timeline is really well respected, “She explained. “I didn’t leave Christian musicΒ becauseΒ of my sexual orientation.”

KNAPP’S SEXUALITY

In fact, it wasn’t until her late 20s that Knapp recalls starting to have an inkling that she might be a lesbian.

Throughout the majority of her music career, she remained celibate “to avoid [an] appearance of evil.” The music industry experience left her somewhat disconnected, she said, claiming that she “didn’t [even] know how to be friends with people.”

“I didn’t want to exercise a rebellion, but I wanted to sit down and ask myself a hard question,” she said of her sexuality when it came time for her to address it, saying that she wanted to explore the question rather than simply ignoring it.

Unlike other performers who have come out vocally to tell the world about their same-sex attraction, Knapp decided not to make a big announcement. Having already exited the Christian music world, she quietly entered into a relationship with a woman and refrained from touring and album-making. Today, she’s in the same relationship — one that has lasted a decade.

THE SINGER’S CHRISTIAN FAITH IS STILL STRONG

Knapp says she’s still very in-tune with her faith. And, in many ways, she says that she’s able to be more genuine than it was a decade ago. In fact, she called it “more heart-driven and spiritual than some of the efforts I had to make 10 years ago.” Knapp says she’s less concerned with engaging in “traditional” actions to express her faith in Christ.

“I’m still very serious about my faith,” she said. “It really becomes a daily component that you have to walk through — your faith is still your faith.”

But the journey wasn’t easy. Knapp admitted to walking away from her faith briefly to explore herself a bit throughout these monumental transformations and realizations. While she’s never questioned her sexual orientation since accepting it 10 years ago, Knapp said she spent a fair amount of time “trying to undo” her religion.

“Most of my struggle was, ‘how do I deal with a faith community that doesn’t understand me,’” the singer explained. “I wasn’t willing to exchange my value of myself.”

When she first met her partner, Knapp’s Christian friends told her to exit the relationship — something she wasn’t willing to do.Β This, of course, was challenging for the musician, who described feeling as though she was being asked to “sell” her partner “down the river” simply because she was a lesbian.

KNAPP WEIGHS IN ON THEOLOGY AND HOMOSEXUALITYΒ

Throughout the interview, the singer maintained that her sexuality was part of her very person and that she is doing the right thing — at least by her own standards — in embracing it.

“I’ve never heard an audible voice from the heavens — and you go ahead with as much as you can with your head and your heart,” she said when asked to weigh in on where she believes God stands on same-sex attraction. “There’s a point where I just accepted who I am and that may be right — that may be wrong.”

When asked to explain why so many Christians reject homosexuality, she was candid.

“There are over 34,000 denominations [and] there’s a wide variety in the way people navigate experience and scripture,” she claimed, remaining respectful of the divergent views that people have on the subject.

Below, see a portion of an interview between former CNN host Larry King and Knapp back in 2010:

“The reality is this is the choice,” Knapp maintained, although she said that she “hate[s] using that word. “I am who I am.Β If God is a God who judges and strikesΒ people of same sex attraction — then he’s going to strike me down. This is the way that I am and now I know what it means to fear God.”

Knapp remains hopeful for Christianity on the whole, as she said she’s looking forward to a day when the church is interested in truly delving into peoples’ unique stories.

“I’m dying to see the church get back to stop throwing people out and start listening to the stories that people are having on a day-to-day basis,” Knapp concluded in her interview with TheBlaze.

Knapp came back on the music scene in 2010 with a non-Christian album called “Letting Go.”

As an old Jesus Freak, I can testify that God uses all music to reach the lost, even the music I don’t like. Gospel is not a musical style, it is a message. You can adapt the message to all idioms of music from country to rock to rap. That this young woman got confused and went a different route is not surprising because the “Christian Music Industry” (that’s right INDUSTRY) is based on making money NOT reaching the lost and does not have the greatest examples of Godly living or teaching.
So Jennifer I am sorry of the turn you made but I love you because Jesus loved you first and still does.. I hope your journey will bring you full circle back to the cross of Calvary.

    A few things,
Many Christian music artists are not Christian and many not artists. I am not saying this is the case for this woman, but the pop music business is what it is.

    Homosexuality learned or biological?
Most practicing homosexuality are doing the ‘in’ thing and the ‘be different than daddy’s generation’ thing. Let”s face it, tatoos and piercings aren’t that wild anymore and interracial marriage/dating is not news.

Other practicing homosexuals are biologically tuned to being sexually drawn to the same sex. I say this because that is the case for me and my heterosexuality. I also believe that pedophiles have a biological thing with their sexual wants.

I don’t think one changes to homosexual from heterosexual if it is a biological thing, and I think if you don’t know you are homosexual by puberty it is more than likely not biological.

My sin is as great or greater an offense to God than the act of homosexuality or of that of a homosexual. Light and dark do not mix. But if you refuse to see sin for what it is then you can not be forgiven. Is homosexuality a sin? The Bible and Koran say it is. If you don’t believe it is then you should not call your self a practitioner of either of those books. Those books leave no room for picking and choosing your right and wrongs. They both say God is who God is, as in I AM who I AM.

Dear Jennifer, I have listened to your music over the years and still have your songs in my head. The words you sang are true, as God never changes. God can use anyone to spread his Word and I believe he chose you. From what you say, you fear God may strike you down for your choice. I believe this is the way we feel when we are out of his will. It is our choices to live our own way or claim that this is the way he made us that keep us in a state of doubt dread and fear of God rather than the loving relationship he desires. We all choose each day to serve him or go our own way. I certainly have chosen my own way on many occasions and felt distanced from God. This is a constant struggle and will never go away, as we are self oriented creatures by our nature. Christ calls us to come and follow him. He doesn’t say, “Be who you are and hope I don’t strike you down.” From listening to your music for so long I feel like I know you. You are about the age of my daughter. I don’t want to sound judgemental, as I don’t struggle with this issue but believers are called to be living sacrifices. Our lives speak of what our heart is like and what we hold most dear. Our lives reveal our master to be Christ or ourself. I sense you are in a battle over this issue and you are not at peace with it. Christ asks us to make tough choices and abandon things that keep us from a close relationship with him. I believe the Holy Spirit is speaking to you to come back. I pray that you do. GR McN

I need only say this, The Christ she claims to embrace and follow Himself said in Matthew 19:4-6 exactly what a marriage is and in His statement He said nothing about being GAY.

So, we have Christ stating in the explicit what a marriage is according to the scriptures and that shameful woman contradicting Him, the Creator of everything.

Christ is not silent on homosexuality as He is the author of the entire bible from Genesis to Revelation and He speaks clearly as to the fate of the homosexual and the fate of those the teach it is ok.

She was not a Christian in the past and is nit a Christian in the present. She is in fact a servant of satan

This is more open and shut than you might think it is…”There is a form of Godliness that denies the power there of” from such flee. We come to Jesus Christ as we are, it is the grace of God bought by the shed blood of Jesus that purchased it! But Christ is NOT Jesus’ last name..It is what He functioned in! As Believer’s it is ours to function in, to move and have our being IN. But many Christians believe the Holy Spirit is “a dispensation” that has had it’s time “passed away” in the reality of this day and hour? Without the power of the Holy Spirit to empower the Believer~he is just another mere man wending a way thru the labyrinth of lifes confusing, hurtful, twists and turns the angst of life finding their own way in Jesus! As this gal looks to be an example of. With the Holy Spirit we have an advocate! We have one that moves in us and thru us to guide and direct our path and to learn of Him in the schooling of the Holy Spirit! All of which this gal totally lacks and is floundering under this form of Godliness which offers her what? Burn out? I see this happen 9 out of 10 times in these misguided forms of Christianity that leaves the Holy Spirit outside of the Church altogether! The Word of God is true and every man a liar! Start there! Find the TRUTH IN THE Word & (you)have the Holy Spirit open up that Word to your spirit and all will change for the better in your life!
It is the Truth that Makes you Free! from the laws of sin & death! Free!

    Cast Away!!
Lot of people here on the Blaze who are apparently without sin…. so stone casting seem to be a GO!!

Does my sexuality define me? Am I a victim to my sexual urges…or am I able through agency and the gift of free will to choose?

People (including people who choose to be Gay or were deceived into the lifestyle are fond of saying things like “If God can’t love me for who I am”…or “I know God still loves me for who I am”… always wanting to put the ball in God’s court…rather than their own. God’s love for his children is never in question… but our love for God is always in question. “If you love me… keep my commandments”.

Yes it may be hard… in fact it’s hard to find scriptural examples of where following Christ and his teachings is easy. Discipleship requires sacrifice of our will on God’s alter(not my will but thine be done)… it requires discipline…it requires faith. But for all that it requires..it offers so much more. The promise of eternal life and immeasurable joy….

Nothing that wasn’t forecast by the very Bible who’s teachings they reject. The Bible talks about the end times and the rise of homosexuality as one of the signs along with many churches rejecting the teachings in the Bible. I don’t however need the Bible to tell me that homosexuality is a sickness, nature tells you that.

Now this is dumb, and I have heard other people that are looking for an excuse to be gay. Since she is having an issue with what the Scripture teaches about Homosexuality and her trying to reinvent herself in the public and get that “15 minutes of fame” she things by denying Christianity will make it all go away. What is happening is that the Spirit is convicting her and she is feeling uncomfortable of her decision. Becoming gay because it is fashionable and wanting to get the sympathy of the record producers in order to get more fame, money and exposure is simply ‘doing as the Romans’ do.

Not sure if in early biblical times anyone knew anything out genes and chromosones, but for most gays they were born that way. It doesn’t matter what your orientation is but its wrong not to accept them. I am opposed to calling it marriage but they do have the right to live together will all the benefits.

From her own admission, she has followed after the flesh rather than the Spirit, even relating to her “conversion” into the apostate westernized “christianity” of modern times. She fits the character in Romans 1, of one who has been “given over” to herself, to do tthose things “which are not convenient”. God can remove the appeal to conscience and leave one in a state of mind where the serious excercise of reflection is dead. Being in this condition leaves one to “fill up the measure of their iniquity”. Her ‘glory’ will be short lived, unless she has a gosple repentance, forsaking all sin. God won’t be mocked by the pragmatic populism of the day. Those that are not found “holy and without blemish” will receive the “resurrection of damnation”. Jesus says so, and one word from Him is an unchanging eternal law. Romans 2:4-7

lol it seems to me she went about this in the most rational, adult way as possible. She explored Christianity to a point where she felt she understood it for herself, and it just didn’t work out and realized she was a different person and it wasn’t right for her.

Are you zealots really going to chastise her for that? There’s a reason people think Christians are extremists, and it isn’t just because of the Westboro Baptist Church.

I don’t care whether or not she’s a lesbian because I couldn’t give two sh*ts what she does in regards to that. It’s whatever to me. A non-issue. I just don’t care.

What I do care about is religious idiots pushing their agenda to the point they will actually criticize and say the most ABSURD things directed at someone because it turns out Christianity isn’t right for them. Give me a break.

I like that you used the word “chastise” because that is exactly what one does when a loved one is on the wrong path and you wish to help them.

Condemning is another thing entirely and many will unfortunately do that as well.

Since she still claims to be a Christian, it is right for other Christians to weigh in on her theological choices. Is it not logical to judge the merits of other ideas espoused by any who claim to be in the same group as you?

Is it logical to toss out ad hominem statements about the quality of decisions made on faith?

Logic can be easily lead down the wrong path if any of the base assumptions prove to be wrong. In order for logic to remain true, it requires reason, and sometimes faith.

THIS is an example of a smart, driven individual for whom the ‘plank’ of the GOP interfering with personal life prevents her supporting the GOP.

I respect your right to be opposed to homosexuality. To act like it is evil… or more evil than a host of things those of us who are heterosexual do at least, is something those who use religion to lambast homosexuals will have to answer to after this life.

I don’t want blantant PDA’s anymore than of heterosexual couples, but anyone who thinks it’s a conscious choice when facing such sometimes hateful reactions is not thinking logically.

and considering most states are ‘no contest’ states, there is ZERO state or federal ‘protection of marriage’ so acting like homosexuals shouldn’t be allowed to in some way make their commitments legally binding is an unfair double standard.

Instead of pushing away people who are ‘different’ GOP right wing religious conservatives need to learn to accept other beliefs so long as they are not trying to make everyone be gay… it would build the base and help protect against the losses of personal religious freedom the ACLU and atheists are championing by building the number who would oppose their minority rules approach…

Until the religious right accepts other minority religion and social beliefs into the fold, they set themselves up for loss… of Presidency and of religious freedom in the nation.

The number of people who are actually members of Christ’s church is a very small number, and those members of Christ’s church don’t really care about how gay people live. Because the fact f the matter is that people don’t decide who is married and who isn’t. Some people’s spirit are joined even long before they know of each other, and they support each other even before they come together. That’s something gay people will never know, and therefore I don’t care how they live.

      Coach,
I’m glad to hear the term Sexual Disfunction instead of Gay or Lesbian. There is none of us who, every day, don’t have to deal with some aspect of our existence that requires concerted effort to correct or overcome. That goes for sexual disfunction. We may have a lifelong struggle, but struggle we must. Never call Okay what Jesus (God with us), forgives the sin, but cannot overlook the continued disobedience of the heart. That aspect rejects the power of God to change those he has called to Himself. Feelings OK, forgiveness on the way, fail to repent, when this life closes, find out what HE meant.

Knapp was an evangelical. She woke up and realized that evangelicals hate on other Christian groups, lesbians, and everything in between. Evangelicalism, like many religions, cherry picked their values from the Bible and ignored anything in that book contrary to their newly formed beliefs. On the surface it sounds nice but it doesn’t take a whole lot of digging to realize evangelicalism is a sect that is full of holes – this is why it’s easy for atheists to debate evangelicals. Give it another decade or so and that sect of Christianity will have collapsed under it’s own weight.

It is sad how Truth is considered hateful. V15 is ignorant on that front too. Jesus said that homosexuality defiles people (Matthew 15:19-20- the Greek word “porneia” encompasses all sexual deviations, including homosexuality.)

Homosexuality is not about who someone is, but about how someone behaves. Knapp is not a “lesbian” as if she has no choice in the matter. She is a woman who acts homosexually. She didn’t just wake up one day and realize “Oh, I’m a lesbian.” She deliberately chose her lifestyle. We may not be able to help what tempts us, but we certainly will be held accountable for our behavior. Knapp has chosen a life of sin and is now associating with people who help her ignore her conscience.

Someone in this thread said it correctly: “If you love me you will keep my commandments.” Jesus also said that blessed are the ones who keep his commandments and teach others to do so.

People that believe themselves to be God are in fact Godless. Egotism is not religion. When Strange sexual practices define the person, not their core beliefs, it means they have mental problems. Sexuality by any definition is largely a hormonal response keyed to reproduction. It is sooo obvious what the purpose is, but they worship the juvenile pursuit of friction and juices. Funny how they declare themselves enlightened to be trapped in a prepubescent obsession with their own sexuality.

If you have doubts about these messages being authentic, then read all the “Crusade Prayers”. Notice that they call for recognition of the sinful state of ones soul; the need for one to confess and repent; the call for the forgiveness and mercy of The Lord; the asking for humility and the descent of The Holy Spirit upon the soul; the submitting to the will of God; theΒ praise and thanksgiving for the mercy and love of God; the asking for mercy even on even the darkest of souls; for the protection from the mark of the beast; for the ruin and failure of the plans of Satan, Anti-Christ and false prophet; for God’s will to be done and His Kingdom to be manifested. Every prayer is meant to bring the soul closer to God. If even one prayer by the penitent is answered, then Satan loses that penitent soul. How does that help his efforts to steal souls from God? The plain answer is, it doesn’t. These messages and prayers can not be from anyone but God. Do not harden your heart, but turn and hear the voice of God.

Christians DO NOT HATE any other group, they hate the things that those people do which brings reproach on God and Jesus Christ, no matter what group it may be. Jesus loves the sinners, just not their ways. God loves all the people in the world and this is evident by the scripture, Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him SHOULD not perish, but have everlasting life. SHOULD is used here, not SHALL. There is a major difference. Just believing that Jesus is Christ is not the single redeeming factor, although it is very important, there are other requirements – among them, Mt 22:39 ……”Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself ” among many others.
This is not a preaching forum, so I will not get into all the particulars, but God and Jesus DO NOT approve of Lesbian and Homosexual activivites, no brag just fact. Luke 17: 26 And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man………… 28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot……….
What happened in the days of Lot? Ge 13:13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly. Luke 17:29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Read Ro 1:26, 27 about lesbians, homosexuals and what God thinks about them. This woman, being around evangelicals that much, should know God’s stance on this matter, but there are New Age Churches now.

@ Krispy01, So sorry, didn’t mean to reply to the entire blog by hitting the REPLY button under your post. My sincerest apologies. My post was actually meant for someone else who was defending her lifestyle ‘CHOICE’.

I cannot judge her for the choices that she is making. She, like me, has dual natures. I am not gay, but I am a sinner, and my natural man is as much a dysfunction as anything. At the same time, I have been born again. This means that I have a spiritual nature. Those two natures are always in battle against one another. Romans chapter 7 describes the same battle that took place in Paul. Romans chapter 8 however shows the key. There is now no condemnation for those that are in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the flesh wars against the Spirit, and the spirit against the flesh. For they are enmity against one another. My heart and my mind seek to follow the Spirit, but my sinful desires do win out on occasion. In her situation, she appears to be willfully choosing the flesh, her sensual nature. This is not the first time I’ve heard of something like this in the past month. I know the bible states that men love their sin more than they love God, so He gives them up to a debased mind. But our natural desires are very hard to resist unless we really build our spiritual strength up. We have to want God’s love more than we want our sin.
