‘The Greatest Betrayal’: Spec. Ops Community Releases Rebuttal to SEAL’s Tell-All OBL Raid Book
Many have heard of the controversial “tell-all” book No Easy Day on the Osama bin Laden raid, due to be released today. A first-person account of the deadly mission, the author “Mark Owen” (a pseudonym, though his real name has been leaked) has drawn significant fire from his colleagues for some what some are deeming “the greatest betrayal the community has ever known.”
Because the book didn’t go through a Department of Defense review, there is speculation that it may contain compromising information. But more than that, there is a sense of dishonor associated with “cashing in” on the dangerous work done by the brave men, the rest of whom keep quiet in their dignity.
Now, the Special Options Forces Situation Report (SOFREP), a group of the man’s former colleagues, have written a rebuttal: No Easy Op: The Unclassified Analysis of the Book Detailing the Killing of OBL.
In their opinion, it does not matter whether the Obama administration had already politicized the raid, or indeed, if they lied about how it happened. It is not Owen’s job to set the record straight and correct the country’s elected officials.
“This is essentially the two wrongs make a right argument,” they note. “If a politician can get away with it [then] so should a former SEAL who was on the raid. This argument is particularly appealing to those who oppose the current president, of course.”
Moreover, they have serious doubts about just how noble Owen’s intentions were. According to the authors, Owen “was treated very poorly upon his departure … [and] once he openly shared that he was considering getting out of the Navy to pursue other interests.”
“What do you do when you find yourself pissed off at your former employer, out of a job, and in need of a paycheck? You start cashing in chips,” they argue.
A number of Owen’s former colleagues have already condemned the man in the strongest of terms, and the authors of “No Easy Day” don’t predict there will be a change of heart.
“Members of the Special Operations community are well known for eating their own,” they warn, noting that others who have behaved similarly “are considered personae non grata by their former units…members are instructed to never talk to the author and the author is never to be allowed to participate in unit functions again.”
A Blaze contributor and former Navy SEAL felt similarly, writing: “Mark, the men who stood next to you should have been everything you needed. Now we weep from your betrayal and we pray for your soul.”
One of the risks, they note, is what they call a “Threat Chain.”
They explain:
Once one person is exposed there are a chain of people at risk. Within 48 hours of the initial press release an Al Qaeda affiliate had put out a death hit on the author.
Then, when FOX News leaked his true identity it became easy for people to search openly on the Internet and secure public records that pointed the his last place of residence in Virginia Beach, VA. And what about his friends, and their families that still live in this neighborhood?
But what of the book itself, aside from the author’s integrity? Will it have details on the raid that the American people seem to crave?
Yes and no, they predict:
The reading public will get their dose of reality, no argument there.
However, when it comes to military operations, the details matter, [and] most of the intimate details will not be included in “No Easy Day,” which we believe is a good thing. It remains to be seen whether classified material was published. The DOD General counsel has yet to point out specific disclosures. For better or for worse, this book will become the established narrative on the raid, the only “truth.” In the public eye this will probably be the final word on how the Bin Laden raid was executed. Contradictory information will be scorned once the public has made an investment in the story unfolded in “No Easy Day,” and maybe this is a good thing.
In the end, they say, while Owen may have had “good intentions,” No Easy Day “is nothing more than a well-executed marketing strategy that will make the author and publisher tens of millions over night.”

Tom Clancy wrote several books that contained classfied information. I know that for a fact, because some things he wrote I was sworn not to disclose in the work I did. Tom Clancy had the okay for his books, because it served a purpose–notably, propaganda for the miliatry.
Owen should have had Tom Clancy co-write the book, then there would not be this fuss.
All we want is the TRUTH, and I CAN HANDLE THE TRUTH.

the truly dangerous leaks came from the office of the president. No operator is safe, when the man calling the shots leaks to the press. I doubt there is any detail in this book that already isn’t public and terrorist known. That being said, he should have had the book vetted first, as he was legally required to do.

Posted on September 4, 2012 at 7:14pmWell, Mr. Obama has the SEALS exactly where he wants them…divided. He’s managed to divide Americans by race, class, gender and religion.
Just a note to all SEALS. The greatest betrayal was the night bin Laden was killed…and the SEALS were put in danger so Mr. Obama could play hero. I can’t name friend, relative, neighbor or coworker who didn’t get angry when they heard the ‘fact filled’ annoucement that night. Geraldo seemed to be the most excited…and he was in the military.
Americans aren’t opposed to the book written by the SEAL because it’s time that someone tell the truth. The government lied and gave full access to Hollywood so they could put their anti-American spin on things. So a patriotic SEAL, who was on the mission and knows the truth isn’t distasteful in the least. If coverage hadn’t been endless and there wasn’t a Hollywood movie without the expertise of that SEAL, the book never would have been written…we all know that.
Americans are extremely patriotic and will do anything to help a wounded warrior.
Americans realize that the military in general and the SEALS in particular do not ask for recognition.
Americans realize that SEALS were put in danger by the White House invitation, etc.
Americans are watching their military being cut in half and their borders wide open – courtesy of their own President. Subsequently, Americans are losing their faith in the administration and appreciate the truth…period.

Secretive Navy SEALs take starring role in new film
AFP February 19, 2012
US defense officials did not find out about the movie until after the fact, causing consternation at the Pentagon, which has an office that vets scripts and negotiates cooperation deals with Hollywood producers.
Although troops have appeared in movies before, such as “Black Hawk Down,” this film ventures into uncharted territory, possibly jeopardizing the anonymity that the special forces have sought to safeguard.
There has been a decidedly “mixed reaction” to the movie project at the Pentagon, the defense official said.
“Obviously, clearly we wish it had gone through the normal channels,” said Vince Ogilvie, deputy director for entertainment media at the Pentagon.
But the screen debut of active duty troops from a community that has always shunned media attention has irked some inside the military, who worry that a line has been crossed.
Defense officials at one point even weighed whether to prevent the film’s release by withdrawing legal permission for footage of the SEALs and military hardware.

Posted on September 4, 2012 at 6:48pmHaving reviewed today’s comments on this story, I am amazed to read posters denigrate the SEALs and by extension, our other SOF warriors. SEALS and other SOF troops are the some of the most honorable among us, and take on some of the most dangerous missions you could ever conjure. They are not boot lickers nor think of themselves as a new version of Mt Olympus titans/gods. They are simply highly capable and confident men, committed to our country, their families and fellow citizens, in addition to their teammates. The book by Mr. Owen does not fit in with the informal standards of SOF to remain as quiet professionals…whilst we see leaks from the White House and over sensationalism of their exploits for political gain, the SOF warrior remains in the background, committed to higher principles that does not denigrate the honor of those who serve now, and those that have paid the ultimate price. This is nothing but a bad situation all around, whereby the book’s author forfeited the love and respect of his teammates for monetary gain–what a total shame. There are many truths spread around here, from the vetting needed before publishing to the fact that had the author remained on active duty, he could not have published his story. All true, but the disintegration of unit cohesion and honor is the most terrible loss, and the many ninnies commenting on what they do not know, and it is blatantly obvious, is troubling to this veteran observer. We must be better than this.

This man, ex-SEAL, disobeyed a lawful order about disclosure. I have served commands that dealt in classified material and signed the same when I left that command. When I retired, I signed another such pledge.
The lawful order is that if you write about your experiences while in the service, it MUST be vetted by the DoD to ensure that no classified material leaks out.
You are the same folks who rightly castigated the administration for leaking classified material in its bid to look buff on defense. Now you berate those who would personally sanction a former member for doing the same. What is WRONG w/you people?!
You cannot have it both ways.
