FRESNO, Calif. (TheBlaze/AP) — A California family not allowed to board a cross-country flight said Tuesday that they believe they were discriminated against because their son has Down syndrome. Ironically, the news comes on the same day that Glenn Beck detailed his horrible experience with a rude American Airlines flight attendant.
Robert Vanderhorst, his wife Joan and 16-year-old son Bede, who is disabled, were booked to fly on an American Airlines flight from Newark to Los Angeles on Sunday when the boy and his parents were not allowed on the plane.
The family from Porterville had upgraded to first class tickets at an airport kiosk, and asked the airline to seat the boy and one of his parents together, Vanderhorst said – a request the airline granted.
When the family was ready to board, they were stopped by airline personnel, told their son was a “security risk” and would not be allowed on the flight. The parents protested, and later were rebooked to fly coach with another airline.
American Airlines spokesman Matt Miller said the disabled boy was agitated and running around the gate area prior to boarding, which his parents dispute. The airplane’s pilot observed the boy, Miller said, and made the call based on his behavior.
“He was not ready to fly, that was our perspective,” Miller said. “We rebooked the family out of concern for the young man’s safety and that of other passengers as well.”
But Vanderhorst said his son did not run at any time, did not make any loud noises and didn’t display any other offensive behaviors. The boy walked around with him or sat quietly in the gate area, Vanderhorst said.
A cell phone video captured by the boy’s mother shows Bede sitting and quietly playing with a baseball cap.
Vanderhorst said Bede, a freshman at Granite Hills High School in Porterville, about 70 miles from Fresno, is very charming in contact with other people. The family has flown more than two dozen times with him, without any difficulties.
“Usually my son gets his snack and falls asleep, just like most people,” Vanderhorst said. “The problem is this pilot thought my son might not be like most people. He didn’t want a disabled person disturbing other passengers in first class.”
The family says the pilot might have also been affected by the disabled boy’s size – Bede is 5’1 and weighs 160 lbs.
On the second airplane, the family was placed in the last row and no passengers were allowed to sit within two rows of them, Vanderhorst said.
He hoped that airlines would change their mentality when dealing with the disabled.
“It’s ridiculous and groundless to claim that this kid created a security risk,” he said. “It was the pilot’s insecurity. I paid for those seats and there was nothing that should have prevented us from taking that flight.”
American Airlines’ Miller said the company will reimburse the family for the upgrade fees.

Sep. 5, 2012 at 7:18amThere is a reason this company is currently in bankruptcy. They have for the last 30 years let the inmates run the company and now they expect the nation and more importantly their stock holders to pay the price for their brand of airline.
Negative advertising? THEY DON’T CARE. Their only hope of survival is for government assistance and the remote chance that US Air might buy them. Let them die and let the other airlines consume the parts that have any value at bottom basement prices.

Sep. 5, 2012 at 9:55am“let the inmates run the company” While that statement reflects you ideological addiction, AA like all other public traded companies is run by executives, the board, with heavy influence from their large investors and bankers. If there is a performance issue you should start there. Funny how the board and executives love to take credit for strong performance, but are the first ones to the exits, usually with money in their pocket, when things are not going so well. Leaders take responsibility, leaders are capable of negotiating and coexisting with unions. The same unions existed with AA and the other airlines were performing well and making money. And yes, it is very sad that employees need to unionize to get a fair, market wage that reflects their contribution to the company’s performance. Unlike, manufacturing it is tough to outsource service jobs to countries where workers can be exploited. There is a balance between company or individual based capitalism and contributing to the overall economy and betterment of the country. The wealthy and large corporations used to have that as their ideal and strong contributors to the growth and strength of the US. Today they are the primary reason for its decline. If the behavior of the major banks, Wall Street firms, tax avoidance strategies utilized by companies like GE, Bain Capital doesn’t convince of that you are actively and purposely blind.

AA = another Airlines .. I like that .. actually I have not flown in years .. and it would take a MAJOR emergency to get me on a plane … MAJOR. Not worth the hassle or indignity that today’s air travel involves. If I can’t drive somewhere .. I will stay home.

Sep. 5, 2012 at 5:35amAmericans are subjected to illegal search while illegals are allowed to walk freely into our country through our southern boarders. Illegals walk freely through out our country and use up our tax dollars on health care, education, police protection as well as free housing and all other welfare benefits. Now they are even giving them a drivers license so they can vote. All this while long standing American citizens are treated like criminals. Why? So we do not offend Obama’s Islamic friends and so that the democrats can obtain the votes of the illegals. They already have enough dead people voting for them!

Sep. 5, 2012 at 6:21amYou’ve heard the stories of Musl ims strapping bo mbs to children with Down Syndrome and basically forcing them to be su icide bomb ers? I had a mechanic from the Sudan, who kept staring at my son. Finally, he came up to me and showed me a picture of HIS son, who was also Down Syndrome. He didn’t say, but I think he’s the reason he left Sudan, to keep his son safe. You could see his eyes light up when he talked about him. I’ve had parents steer their kids away from mine in a public play ground as if you could “catch” Down syndrome. It hurts, but you have to realize they are the ones missing something. My son is my joy.

Why fly and make yourself a slave to this kind of treatment both from the airlines and our currently oppressive regime. It just makes no sense. Sep. 5, 2012 at 4:07amNot that I’ll ever fly again, but I have to agree. Had a cousin who was disabled (SMA). He was in a wheelchair and frail looking. People assumed he was stupid and hard of hearing. He was scarey smart (math whiz and a sponge of everything else)! I swear he could hear a mouse pee on a cotton ball! Most people acted like he was stupid, and mostly deaf. He was sharper than at least 90% of anybody I’ve ever known. Book, cover?

Sep. 5, 2012 at 3:03amAmerican Airlines personnel have become less and less interested in SERVING customers and more and more inclined towards ABUSING customers, to the point where an American Airlines flight can more resemble gay pride bootcamp at Pendleton than the enjoyable experience that customers have a right to expect.
Some of the homosexual hires that they have taken on (no need to ask and tell with AA flamers!) are so obstinate and (for lack of a better word) PISSY, that it’s almost a cointoss whether booking a reservation has a better than 50/50 chance of getting you there. Sep. 5, 2012 at 5:54amI have found this abusive attitude to be more and more prevalent in all the unionized groups. Police and teachers are more and more abusive and less and less service oriented. I honestly believe the those in positions of authority in these “service” groups are being trained to treat the public as the enemy. If the “progressive” Democratic party is allowed to control this country all those who hold on to traditional American values will be the illegals. Traditional Americans have already been labeled ‘haters’ and people who speak ‘hate speech.’ Laws have already been passed against “hate speech,” however it does not seem to apply to the vile speech that comes out of the mouths of the left.
