The economy that President Barack Obama inherited from Republicans was “a total mess” and he needs another four years in the White House to finishing fixing it, former President Bill Clinton argued Wednesday in his prime time speech at the Democratic National Convention.
The 42nd president of the United States commanded the DNC crowd, framing the upcoming November election as a clear choice between Obama, who he argued would bring “shared prosperity,” and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.
“My fellow Americans, you have to decide what kind of country you want to live in,” Clinton explained. “If you want a you’re-on-your-own, winner-take-all society, you should support the Republican ticket. If you want a country of shared prosperity and shared responsibility — a we’re-all-in-this-together society — you should vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden.”
Clinton said the GOP’s campaign argument is “pretty simple: ‘We left him a total mess, he hasn’t cleaned it up yet, so fire him and put us back in.’” He also said Republicans live in an “alternate universe.”
“I like the argument for President Barack Obama’s re-election a lot better,” Clinton said.
“Here it is: He inherited a deeply damaged economy, put a floor under the crash, he began a long hard road to recovery and laid the foundation for a modern, more well-balanced economy that will produce millions of good new jobs, vibrant new businesses and lots of new wealth for innovators.”
Watch a portion of his speech here:
Clinton admitted that the country is not where it needs to be, but argued the country is better off today than it was four years ago when Obama took office. The convention hall rocked with delegates’ applause and cheers as Clinton – unofficial Democratic ambassador-in-chief to anxious voters in a tough economy – worked the crowd and attempted to sway voters.
He sought to rebut every major criticism Republicans have leveled against the president at their own convention last week in Tampa, and said that in fact, since 1961, far more jobs have been created under Democratic presidents than when Republicans sat in the White House – by a margin of 42 million to 24 million.
Clinton accused Republicans of proposing “the same old policies that got us into trouble in the first place” and led to a near financial meltdown. Those, he said, include efforts to provide “tax cuts for higher-income Americans, more money for defense than the Pentagon wants and … deep cuts on programs that help the middle class and poor children.”
“As another president once said, ‘There they go again,’” he said, quoting Ronald Reagan, who often uttered the remark as a rebuke to Democrats.
Clinton also took a jab at the Tea Party, saying “the far right that now controls [the Republican] party” seems to “hate” President Obama and are unwilling to reach across the aisle to work with Democrats. Meanwhile, Clinton said Obama is “committed to constructive cooperation” with both parties on issues that will move America forward.
“We are going to keep president Obama on the job,” Clinton added, the crowd erupting and giving him a standing ovation. Chants of “Four more years!” proceeded.
The former president said Republicans want to get rid of financial regulations that will prevent another financial crash and want to make enormous cuts to the budget that help the middle class and “poor children.”
Clinton bragged on President Obama’s health care overhaul, saying millions of people who didn’t have access to health insurance now do thanks to Obamacare. He claimed businesses have received roughly $1 billion in refunds from insurance companies because of the health care law and people ages 19-25 have insurance for the first time because they can be covered on their parents’ plans.

“We can not afford to give the reins to someone who will double down on trickle down,” Clinton said about Romney, before accusing the GOP of disenfranchising poor minority voters with voter ID laws.
Following his DNC keynote speech, Clinton was joined on stage by President Obama and the two posed for the cameras and waved to the cheering members of the audience.

Clinton’s speech marked the seventh convention in a row he has spoken to party delegates, and the latest twist in a relationship with Obama that has veered from frosty to friendly. Whatever the past, the incumbent and his high command looked to the former president to vouch for him when it comes to the economy, his largest impediment to re-election.
Twelve years after leaving office, Clinton retains high popularity in the electorate in general as well as among white men who are dubious about giving Obama a second term in power in an era of slow economic growth and 8.3 percent joblessness.

The former is shared prosperity.
The latter is the Romney/ Ryan budget plan.
Job growth come from increased demand.

I had a char that showed Reagan’s job growth compared to Obama’s but I misplaced it. Reagan’s system worked. Reagan opened the floodgates and jobs were created at more than double the rate Obama has and that was with 40 million fewer people in the country. Obama has managed to drive many of the rich out of the country. Obama’s big government, class warfare, and over-regulating had exactly the effect that the Tea Party warned us about – but you weren’t listening were you? You totally fell for the propagandists’ half the country is racist and the pope will rule the country (hook, line and sinker).

Phooey…the ‘rats (like their cousins in cuba, china, russia, venezuela, bolivia, viet nam, etc) want a two-class society with the demonrat elites populating the upper class and everyone else populating the second class.
By definition the middle class is IN THE MIDDLE; however, the demonrats’ primary goal since rocks were warm is to tax the rich who are non-demonrat elites so much that they sink out of the upper class and use part of that tax (the rest goes into the demonrat elite’s own well deserved coffers) to give the “poor” all the “necessities” of life to the extent that they “rise into” the second class. Voila, their two-class nirvana society. The demonrats will DESTROY the middle class.

Sep. 6, 2012 at 2:29amI agree with Sirfoldallot, Clinton was impeached. He is a liar and a sexual pervert. He is a good speaker though. Didn’t he put pressure on the banks to start lending to people who could not afford to buy the home that they did so that everyone could meet the American Dream? So it went under when W was president. I also noticed that when he was talking about Medicare & Medicaid & how Republicans would screw the elderly & disabled, I noticed he failed to mention how much of that money is going to Illegal Invaders.
When he was talking about all the jobs Obama has created, he failed to mention the multi BILLION dollar bridge project in San Francisco that went to a Chinese company who brought in their own workers from China! There is another multi MILLION dollar project that also went to the Chinese that I forget the location.

Mary, let me help you, if that’s possible.
Those hippie communes of the late 60′s failed because ‘because the members did not get a share “just proportional”, as you say, to their effort. They tried Communism, where no one gets more than the next. Problem is, some didn’t put forth any effort to get anything. The communes failed miserably.
@marybethelizabeth…….” or, should a wealthy elite get the increase because they’ve tricked you into believing that there is such a thing as a job creator. Job growth comes from increased demand.”
In your above statement, you obviously have conveniently forgot who has been telling you for the last four years that the Government will “create” jobs. So it seems ‘you’ have been the one tricked.
More jobs do indeed come from increased demand. Those jobs will come from the private sector, and not the government. You either believe in the private sector (Capitalism), or you believe in Communism. Read history to see how well the Russians and Chinese and Cubans have done.

Sep. 6, 2012 at 9:53amStanding for the interests of the American working class and the American people. It stands for our interests in both the present and the future. Solidarity with workers of other countries is also part of our work. We work in coalition with the labor movement, the peace movement, the student movement, organizations fighting for equality and social justice, the environmental movement, immigrants rights groups and the health care for all campaign.
But to win a better life for working families, we believe that we must go further. We believe that the American people can replace a system that puts people before profit.
We are rooted in our country’s history and its struggles for democracy. We call for “Bill of Rights” (socialism), guaranteeing full individual freedoms.
Everyone who wants to work should be guaranteed a job or get unemployment payments until she/he can find a job. We say put the unemployed to work at union wages on massive public works programs to rebuild our cities, provide affordable housing for the homeless, build mass transit, and clean up the environment!
Is this what you believe America is all about? If so, you have been duped into the “Communist party USA’s” agenda for America. This is directly from their site.Rethink what made America great. Clinton “The era of big government is over” ” the end of welfare as we know it” Then he actually did what he said and reduced government, reformed welfare and balanced the federal budget.
What the heck has happened to Bill Clinton’s Democratic party.
The era of big government has only just begun, we want to give states the rights to end welfare reform, and we have a $16 trillion deficit and No Federal Budget for 3 years. Obama’s budget was so disillusion that he couldn’t even get a single democrat to vote for it. Even Pelosi and Reid voted against it.
Bill Clinton reached across the aisle and cooperated with Republicans, Romney reached across the aisle and cooperated with Democrats. Obama can’t get anything done with anybody. Now, the other 2/3rds of government are completely against a destruction of the american status quo, so you have to use some awesome trickery to institute your malevolent plan. After what Clinton said tonight, and if he WASN’T lying, do you really think Romney is the better choice? You don’t have to answer, everyone knows your answer…and somewhere in their heads they know the FACTUAL answer as well.

It’s easy to give a great speech when you’re lying. Try giving a good, honest speech…now that’s hard.
Lets see…the speech once again:
-Free stuff
-No work
-Shared wealth
-Evil business owners
Why don’t they run on the platform they so believe in…Marxism! Know why? Because people won’t “buy” into it! They are endorsed by the “communist party USA” and carry the same principals.
Once again, it’s easy to give a great speech when you lie and slander and that’s what they’ve done!

Congratulations, you climbed out of the unemployed 15% to join the ranks of working Americans. You even make enough to start paying taxes. Now, exactly what part did 0bama play in that ? Are you working for him? A government job perhaps? Maybe a company that contracts with the government? If not, then you are working for a person, company, or corporation. They took a risk in hiring you during a time of sluggish economic activity and in the face of the highest corporate tax rate in the world. Sounds extremely generous of them to me. Now Mitt Romney wants to reduce their tax and regulatory burden, which means higher profit margins, and the possibility of additional hires or even pay increases. 0bama and the dems want to increase the tax and regulatory burden on your employer, which means lower or even non-existent profits, the possibility that your brand new job will be eliminated, the certainty that there will be no new hires or pay increases in the future, and maybe even the possibility of the company closing it’s doors or relocating overseas. So to show your appreciation for your new job, you of course are going to support 0bama. Who can argue with logic like that?

The effective corporate tax you pay in the US is low. Our rates are high because we have a lot of deductions (or loopholes) in our tax laws. In fact some business (GE) pay zero effective tax.
Taxes are not the reasons why business hire/fire folks, it is customer demand. The Democrats focus a lot on the middle class hence Democratic administration have created more jobs than Republican ones. Clinton gave a good example.
Tax rates at 70% were bad but Obama administration had one of the lowest Corporate Tax rates since 1962. They even had less regulatory laws passed compared to GW Bush’s first term.
Corporations have tons of money today but they are not spending because of lack of customer demand. After a major financial crisis there will be retrenching in credit. Construction will take a hit and companies will consolidate and outsource jobs. All of this puts pressure on jobs. Romney’s Tax cuts will do diddly squat in creating customer demand (let’s not double down on trickle down).
I am all for Tax Reform, budget discipline (incl defense), and investment fir helping us move forward.

The country is worse off. Glad you found a good/great job, many are still hurting.
Don’t look at Obama’s and Clinton’s promises now. What was promised 4 years ago?
Research that, then take a hard look at where we are, where we are headed, and then decide if America is on a realistic course. Dems are promising program after program after program. And the logical question is, with what money? 5+ trillion in new debt in less than 4 years is not a positive thing. And the debt was 10.6 trillion when Obama took office.
Finally, Clinton said Romney’s plan would bankrupt Medicare by 2016. Notice he also said it would be “insolvent” by 2024 thanks to Obama. It is gonna be bankrupt sooner or later. He did not even try to dispute that truth. The era of spending like a drunken sailor is almost over, and if nothing is done we will be totally unprepared for chaos. Think great depresson, maybe worse. And it will be OUR fault. We, the people, have elected way too many sneaky bums over the last 100 years.

What is Romney offering that is counter?
As Clinton said, which neither Romney nor Ryan have denied
He says he wants to reduce spending.
He wants to do that with tax cuts for wealthy people and will close loopholes to do so. they haven’t offered up which loopholes to cut
He wants to increase defense spending.
He wants to cut social services.
The only way you could make a legitimate argument for Romney offering something different in regards to spending is either
A) He is for increasing taxes on high earners back to the Clinton level of 39%. Instead he wants to reduce it
Or
B) He is for vast cuts across the board, including defense. Instead he is for increasing defense spending
You can’t say you care about our debt when you want more tax cuts, and more defense spending.
The economy is going to be sluggish no matter who is in charge.
If you’re trying to argue that some things in the Obama administration has gone too far, I don’t disagree. I think the Dodd Frank bill has too much regulation, but I do think some regulation is necessary.
The problem is both sides are set in their ideals that they won’t work on a compromise. It’s either over regulation, or no regulation.
It’s either total gun control, or no gun control.
It’s either abortion any time or no abortion at all.

One out of many things he said tonight really stood out and thats when he said ” Voters on the right believe anything they read and they never stop complaining. Isn’t that the truth? Clinton explained the lies that Romney and more so Ryan have been campaigning on and what I find mind boggling is that even republican voters know they are lies, but they still trust Romney and Ryan even though their campaign is based on lies. Hello, they are lying to you and trying to convince you to vote for them based on lies. I can’t believe how weakminded people have become, they don’t mind being lied to because our guy that is lying is who we want for President….what? So you want a liar for President? The same guy who is lying in ads and in speeches is the same guy who is lying about what he is going to do as President if he wins and your ok with that? It has to be true as the study was done last year that proved those that were more and more religious than others also suffered more brain atrophy than those that weren’t. This study is very telling as it explains why one might except being lied to because their brain can’t register that the person lying doesn’t, never has and never has any plans on doing what he is campaigning on. Its time to get rid of no matter what it takes get rid of the far far right.
