These Are 5 of the Biggest Lies Told on the First Day of the DNC

With the Democratic convention underway, fact-checkers have already pored over the first day of coverage, looking for tidbits of untruth, outright lies and verbal blunders. Not surprisingly — after all, this is politics and many politicians, regardless of party, have a penchant for stretching the truth — numerous deceptive statements were identified.

5 of the Biggest Lies Told on the First Day of the DNC

President Barack Obama (AP File Photo)

FactCheck.org, a project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center, found a plethora of lies and presented them, in detail, on Wednesday morning. The Washington Post’s The Fact Checker did the same. Going speaker-by-speaker and point-by-point, both outlets noticed oddities in discussions and comments about taxation, job growth under Romney when he was governor of Massachusetts and statistics surrounding equal pay, to name just a few problematic subjects.

Here are five of the most pervasive lies:

1) During the keynote address, San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro claimed that Romney would raise taxes on the middle class — something the candidate has pledged not to do. There’s no real evidence at this point that this statement holds any validity.

2) Romney’s personal taxes, too, were on the docket. During his speech, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said, “We learned that he [Mitt Romney] pays a lower tax rate than middle-class families.” The Fact Checker notes that this comment — or a variation of it, rather — once earned the Obama campaign Three Pinocchios. WaPo explains:

Romney certainly made a lot of money in 2010 — $21.7 million, according to his tax return — and yet his tax rate was about 13.9 percent. As we have noted before, he achieves this rate because much of his income is treated as capital gains and dividends, which are taxed at a preferential rate of 15 percent, and because he donates about 14 percent of his income to charity.

3) Jobs, too, were on the agenda. Castro said that there have been 4.5 million “new jobs” under president Obama’s watch. This, too, is not the complete truth. The economy, as FactCheck.org highlights, recovered 4 million jobs (of the 4.3 million lost) since the president took office.

4) As far as the economic health of Massachusetts goes, one speaker, a Democratic governor, charged that Romney ”left his state 47th out of 50 in job growth.” In reality, the state, moved from 50th in job creation during the governor’s first year at the helm to 28th when it came to Romney’s final year (47th was the average when all years were considered throughout his term).

5) FactCheck.org also reports that equal pay advocates misrepresented the numbers surrounding the disparity between men and women in the workforce. While their insinuation that women make 77 cents for every dollar earned by men is true, this is an overall average. When it comes to women and men doing the same work, the gap is much smaller. Also, the disparity may not be attributable to job discrimination (or it may have a minimal impact).

A fascinating addition at the end of The Fact Checker’s analysis is a charge that the Democratic Party is being dishonest about its history on race and civil rights. On the party’s web site, a historical analysis claims, “For more than 200 years, our party has led the fight for civil rights, health care, Social Security, workers’ rights, and women’s rights.”

Despite the fact that this had nothing to do with examining the first day of the convention — which was the purpose of The Fact Checker’s analysis — The Washington Post went on to correct the Democratic record, writing:

It certainly appears to ignore the party’s long and troubled history with race, literally leaping from the “200 years” phrase to 1920, when the women’s suffrage amendment was enacted.

The Web history mentions the leadership of President Woodrow Wilson in helping pass the 19th amendment, without noting that he was a racist or that he repressed civil liberties — even to the point of jailing one of his rivals for the presidency in 1914 (socialist Eugene Debs). [...]

The highly sanitized Web version looks silly by failing to mention such unpleasant facts.

Truly, a fascinating gut-check, especially considering the party’s continued choice to ignore these historical blemishes.

This is the worst attempt to claim that Democrats are lying I’ve ever seen. Most of the article acknowledges that what was said is true, but then tries to spin it another way to make it false. This was the exact thing TheBlaze “reporters” and “journalists” tried to do with the fact checkers on the RNC. That article could be summed up as, “yes, the Republicans were lying, but Obama sucks so it doesn’t matter.”

Way to go Billy Hallowell! Glenn has taught you well.

RLTW, you are absolutely correct. However you must go back a few generations to the old real Democrats, before the SocialistDemocrats took over. I being an original Democrat until Carter began the Progressive and destructive agenda’s. I left the Dembo’s and became a true independent and cast votes as I see fit. I never vote a straight ticket and can therefore call a spade a spade no matter of their ideological stances. The NewProgressives (they exist on both sides of the aisles in DC)constantly lie to We The People and there are millions of Uneducated Americans that when told more than once the same lie, will believe it. This is especially true of the Radicals in This Regime in DC. Avowed Communists (Van Jones)and Radicals like Valerie Jarrett, Michelle and her puppy BO, etc.
May God have mercy on these ignoramuses that vote for this puppet of George Soros in November.

This is the best you can do to stretch statements and imply lies. 1) Romney has said he will lower income taxes on the wealthy and eliminate the estate tax, which of course significantly favors the wealthy. He of course has not said exactly where he will make up the difference if we are to assume he is serious about deficit reduction. It is unfortunate that outside groups have to postulate that he will increase taxes on the middle class since he doesn’t have the guts to state any real positions. 2) Ok billy you can’t refute a alleged lie by repeating a lie. Romney said he paid around 13% in taxes for all the years challenged by Reid. This may very well include real estate, state and sales taxes. And referring to charitable donations as taxes is absurd and you know it. If that was included for many middle class families, particularly the devote Mormons, they pay twice what Romney did. 3) The jobs were lost as a result of the Bush recession and your picking of the lowest figure you could find in jobs created is hardly factual. 4) Well if the average was 47 after four years it doesn’t indicate any huge improvement. Is the last year because it improved or other states got worse. 5) Your representation of this item reflects your general level of ability. Don’t remember you displaying such investigative reporting on the Republican lies regarding Medicare cuts, Welfare to Work and auto plant closing in MN that occurred under Bush (12/23/08) not the PRESIDENT.

Ummmm wow…OK the state went from 50th to 28th the average has nothing to do with the end result. His state went from dead last to almost the middle of the pack. That is called a record to run on. How does that measure up to Obamas record? Romney pays less taxes than the middle class??? That is crazy. Over the past two years he averaged 21 million a year in income. At 13% thats over 2 million a year he has paid. Not only does Romney pay more than middle class families pay, he pays more than they earn. I could retire on Romneys 2011 tax bill. And a reminder to you lefties…tax cuts do NOT = spending. He plans on “paying” for high earner tax cuts with the increased revenue generated by a stimulated economy. Basic economics…when people have more money in their pocket they spend more money thereby creating more comerce and logically more jobs and that in turn generates more income and business taxes the fed can collect. It is a liberal fairy tale that if tax cuts are given to the rich then you MUST tax the less fortunate, and only you progressive pukes actually believe it

The important thing to look at is that actual facts could be used to show the Dem’s lie. most common what i see with factcheck is that they choose to ignore the lies all together. Anyways, one person on the team that will report the truth doesn’t mean the whole organization is changing.

Mitt “I Built It, not you” Romney wants to eliminate the mortgage interest deduction, increasing taxes on the middle class.

The plan is to lower the tax on the higher income brackets, lower the capital gains tax, and eliminate tax loopholes, like mortgage interest rate deduction, so that there will be no loss in tax revenue.

Lowering capital gains taxes channels more of the country’s resources into the stock market. That is the worst thing to do. The money should be lent into the communities for growth, now traded between people of means.

Another tax deduction for elimination: Charitable Contributions.

@Cesna152: Not just Robert C. Byrd but also Lynden Baines Johnson then Senator from Texas and Majority Leader. It was Republicans that brought the Civil Rights Act to the floor of the Senate for a vote and when it looked liked Republicans would win Johnson shelved it and brought it back out in 1964 to boost his popularity, after Kennedy’s Assination Democrats needed a boost since they had taken us into South East Asia to fight Communist expansion after Korea was a stalemate.

He ended up adding US Armed forces to the fight when it looked like the Southern Vietnamese Government was going to fall to the North. All Dems did was prolong the conflict and cost 55K+

I LOVE # 2 ABOUT Romney only paying 13.9% VS. 15%. No one wants to mention him giving 14% to charity. I read an article about Jo Biden giving $300.00 to charity. He thinks he will take it with him. Remember the Senator a few back that hat $90,000 in hi freezer. I wonder why Harry Reid has 4 locked freezers with a guard in his garage. The other day some speaker was bragging about saving the Car Co’s. The new figures according to the U.S. Treasury state that when GM went public a share was $33.00 and it needs to get to $53.00 for us taxpayers to break even. On Aug. 17, 2013 it was $22.01 a share. GM in Feb of 2008 announced that the plant was going to close but not till late 2009 or early 2010. GM in Feb of 2008 started a slow shut down and all but a couple of lines were shut down in Dec. of 2008. The last truck rolled off the line in April of 2009 and a small crew stayed behind to deconstruct the plant for closure. Don’t trust FactCheck. Go on and read the rulings for yourself. Democrats SHOT DOWN the Civil Rights Act more than one. Took a Republican Majority to finally pass it. President who enacted the Emancipation Proclamation? Republican. First party to put a black man on the ballot for President? Republican (Frederick Douglass – 1876, I believe was the year). Dr. Martin Luther King was originally a registered Republican too, until the Kennedy’s started doing him favors during the Civil Rights Movement.

Look at every leap for equality in this country in the last 200 years, and you will find Republicans fighting like hell to enact it, while being stonewalled by Democrats, who, after all, we fought the Civil War against because they wanted States Rights to be able to own slaves.

But the Dems ARE the ones that give out the $300 welfare checks (after they take $10,000 of your earnings in taxes), so they MUST be the party that is friendly to minorities, right?

      Right?

Or maybe they’re just LYING TO YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

freedom….If one is a follower of prophecy, and a “fact” gatherer, no other scenario can be brought. To a believer. the truth is very available, no matter what lies are told and no matter who tells them. The evil being constructed, and the reasons for it are ALL there to see. ‘
What I find unbelievable is that more people aren’t aware of what is going on. The contrast is undeniable, but the public is basically ignorant. This is the goal of the left, to keep the American people mis-informed and weak intellectually. I see a conspiracy that goes back a hundred years in this nation, and at least 2000 years in world history. Both leading up to this flood of lies. We are in the endgame and our opponent is playing with a marked deck. By grace, believers are in a different paradigm, and can discern the truth. I don’t know about anyone else but I am shouting from the rooftops. For what it is worth.
Funny, I have always thought there were more intelligent people than there actually are. Our churches have failed, whether it is because of ignorance or by design, I can’t say, but I have a suspicious mind.

      @Max

While I agree that this is nothing new, my husband found an interesting article (I can’t quote the source so this is for your consideration only) that talked about the Rockefeller’s wanting a global economy and around that time period the churches were against it based on Revelation and the prophecies on what a global government would do. So since then they were contributing to seminaries and other schools of theology to NOT teach Bible prophecy.

Coincidentally if not directly related there is a theology where Christians believe that all of the prophecies have come to pass and sadly enough believe that this is the time of Christ’s reign. Or have completely equated Revelation with symbols and metaphors. To me this is an empty theology and Christians that follow it are missing out on God’s grace in knowing that all of the suffering today means something and some even abandon it completely. Even some believe that none of Revelation will come to pass until the Rapture so when they do start seeing the signs of the Tribulation they deny it to themselves. I am a post Tribulation Christian and I don’t hold to replacement theology in the least where the promises to Isreal are promised to the Church. I believe that the Church and Isreal will come together when we see the end days and the signs of the Tribulation are here today. Be vigilant and prayful and continue to shout. I am. :)

what the left is hiding is that this administration is preparing us for absorption into the NWO. The wealth is gone forever. Our liberties are crumbling under the debt. Our ability to protect our interests on the world stage has been compromised and we seem defenseless.
A great big lie is this utopian dream that these cowardly, and weak minded people are soooo in love with. But it is easy to understand, from a Christian POV……Can’t accept Christ, so we build a world to save ourselves. to build a barrier to keep the Big Bad Wolf out. The only problem, is that the Big Bad Wolf IS the very system they are putting trust in. Obama will do anything, including murder to retain his position. I have zero confidence in the left to deliver ANY beneficial results.
One thing I know about the situation that is developing, pure unadulterated evil has got our president in its supernatural grasp, and has plans for him that don’t include “we the people”.

I think it was the Castro guy who said every American would have health care coverage thanks to Obama. That is a big fat lie:

“Obamacare falls far short of its promise for universal coverage. Since day one, it’s been clear that Obamacare will not achieve universal coverage, and every time CBO revisits the law, the numbers show just that. In March 2010, when the law passed, CBO predicted that there would be 22 million people still without insurance in 2019. In March 2012, the estimate increased to 27 million in 2022. Now, the number has once again increased—to 30 million. So Obamacare leaves just as many people uninsured as it covers.”

Yes, they said fact checkers, but their actions clearly show they won’t let it be dictated by facts either. Facts are partisan, huh? Like the fact that the GM plant didn’t close under Obama? Like the fact that nothing happened with Simpson-Bowles because Paul Ryan and his group of Republicans voted against it? Like the fact that the U.S.’s credit rating went down because the Republicans wouldn’t raise the debt ceiling? Like the fact that Paul Ryan’s budget takes the same amount out of Medicare as Obama’s? Like the fact that Obama has not gotten rid of the work requirement for welfare?

Are those “partisan” facts? Because those are facts that Paul Ryan and the Republicans lied about during the RNC. Furthermore, when confronted about their lies, they continue to spew them.

However some sites that carry the matter show it originated with a sarticial report on a comedy web site; and picked up by Occupy and the Left…so this is now going to become Lie #6 at the Democratic Convention.

But fail though i did, i managed to enjoy other alternatives….basking on the rim of my nearest volcano…was less intemperate than you might think! The air crackled with suspense and the hot air was no less poisonous than that encircling the cavernous wasteland of the dembot convention floor! and much more scenic too i might add! Today i will tour the Sun, I hope to send some thought provoking pictures of the source of its glowing redness! Is this really the source of communism! or a clever disguise? I doubt, fact check will be needed here! The final day of the convention i will sport my newly acquired tan and sieze this moment to do indepth coverage at the entrance to hell, doing as many thought provoking interviews, as was done at the olympics…It will be the best alternative coverage offered, my only fear is: that the DNC is really the gates of hell and i will have to endure the convention, in a glaring bizarre twist of fate!
