A writer for The American Conservative said top White House adviser Valerie Jarrett “threw” him out of the Democratic National Convention for asking about President Barack Obama’s drone strike policy.
Michael Tracey said he approached Jarrett as she finished an on-camera interview Tuesday night and attempted to get a question in about those who are upset about Obama’s use of drones to target and kill suspected militants:
“A lot of the president’s Democratic critics are very — ” I started.
“Excuse me, Sir. Sorry —” an aide of hers swooped in, attempting to intercept me. “Sir, excuse me. Sir!”
I spoke over the aide. “A lot of the president’s Democratic critics are very upset about the policy of drone strikes,” I stated — did Jarrett have any comment?
Tracey said Jarrett initially said nothing as the aide tried to shoo him away, but then directed him to her communications officer to set up an interview.
“Why can’t you comment right now, given that I’m already interacting with you?” I countered.“I would suggest that you do just what Politico, and just what [inaudible] did, and ask for an interview. And we would be happy to accommodate you. I don’t think it makes sense —”
“So you have no comment on drone strikes?” I interjected. She started for the exit.
“Many Pakistanis are dying, ma’am,” I shouted. No response. By then Jarrett was out of reach.
“Do you have a card?” her aide, Clo Ewing — Director of Constituency Press for the Obama campaign — queried me angrily. (She did not reply to an emailed request for comment.)
“No.”
At that point, Tracey said, Ewing examined his media pass and then “summoned two uniformed police officers, who informed me I was to leave the area immediately — my duly-assigned credential notwithstanding.”
In a rare interview about his drone policy broadcast Wednesday on CNN, Obama described the “extensive” decision-making process as one with “a lot of checks, a lot of eyes looking at it.”
“Drones are one tool that we use, and our criteria for using them is very tight and very strict,” he told CNN. “It has to be a target that is authorized by our laws; it has to be a threat that is serious and not speculative; it has to be a situation in which we can’t capture the individual before they move forward on some sort of operational plot against the United States…our preference is always to capture if we can because you can gather intelligence.”
Additionally, Obama said, “we are very careful about avoiding civilian casualties.”

There’s actually a lot of things he and the republicans have failed to talk about that bugs me. Not true. When you know where Obama stands, you don’t need to know anything else. You see, someone who stands that far out on the left edge, there isn’t any room for anyone further to the left, thus anyone is better than Obama. Thus I could almost care less about Romney’s possible policies, because I know overall he is so far further to the right, it has GOT to be better than what we have. So no, I don’t need to know every policy or possibility to vote FOR Romney, because ultimately I would vote AGAINST Obama anyway. This is what makes Ron Paul supporters look stupid at this point. To stand on principal is good, but to do so at the absence of logic risking four more years of Obama has got to be illogical for anyone who claims to care about what Ron Paul suggests. A vote for Obama, or any vote that risks the re-election of Obama brings us closer to a day when a guy like Ron Paul will wind up hidden away in a federal Prison and all free speech and “libertarian” mantra would become a crime against the state. No matter what you don’t like about Romney, he won’t be taking us in THAT direction. You have to admit – Republicans gave Ron Paul a better shot at getting his message out and possibly being the candidate than he has ever had before. But-not having the votes is

I believe Roth would whole heartedly accept drone strikes if it was on a country that America declared war on. Why should our president be able to decide what countries to strike and who to kill? He doesn’t have that power. The people have the power to elect representatives that then vote to GIVE him that power. That is how our country is set up. If you believe a president should be able to change the rules midgame then you have no clue how our constitution works.

Sep. 6, 2012 at 4:05pmMy concern is the fact that two uniformed police officers were told to remove the reporter. Under what authority did they do that? Their job is strictly to enforce the law and not to engage in odd jobs. That should have been done by hired security people. The officers were not operating under the authority of law and therefore were wearing the uniform outside their authority. It’s been happening more and more each day. Operating under the color of authority is a felony.

Once upon a time the average citizen could walk right into the White House and ask questions. Nowadays, if you even approach one of these clowns (who wasn’t even elected by the people) a question they have you thrown out by the police. It wasn’t even a very challenging question wording-wise. And he had every right to be there.
Seeing what happened with gun confiscation after Katrina made me really see that the government, despite the laws, rights and rules in this country, behaves no differently than any 3rd world dictatorship. They interpret the laws and rules however they see fit and routinely break the law with no concern for the consequences they should face. They do whatever they want, and until people hold the government strictly accountable, it will get worse. Sadly, the people of this country are too complacent to keep the government on the short leash they should be on. Do not comply!

What you don’t do is invent an all powerful agent out of thin air, give him/her unprecedented executive powers and no accountability, and then smile and say “gosh, it’s no big deal”. There needs to be an end to “czars” once and for all. I find the entire notion of “czar” aka “Caesar” aka “mini dictator” revolting to every principle this nation was founded upon.

Sep. 6, 2012 at 3:36pmI’m sure that the POTUS and all of the drone zealots would have equal appreciation and acceptance if say China were to fly drones over US airspace and take out political dissidents so long as China were equally considerate of the civilian casualty issue right?

Sep. 6, 2012 at 3:53pmFolks tend to wear a very heavy set of blinders regarding things like this. They would of course be outraged and we’d immediately be on war footing with China would that to happen, yet they think that we can act with impunity and that by doing so we’re doing God’s work and are above questioning.
This article is proof positive of such an attitude.

Sep. 6, 2012 at 8:38pmThat has very little sporting value although the results would be positive for humanity. Bonus points for moving targets is the order of the day. (To paraphrase a movie I have seen…easy, you just don’t lead them as much).
