Picture of Toddlers’ Potty Training in the Middle of a Restaurant Dining Room Goes Viral

Potty training is often considered an unpleasant task facing parents, but under current social norms, it has to be done. And like most bathroom activities, it’s usually a private event.

One mother of twins in Utah, though, took her training public, placing her daughters on potty training toilets — you know, the plastic seats with a little toilet lid — at a public restaurant’s table. KSL-TV reports Kimberly Decker, who was in the restaurant at the time, snapped a photo of this disturbing scene and posted it on Facebook.

Here’s how Decker described the incident at the Thanksgiving Point Deli:

“I noticed that this lady was having her two — she had two twins, two little girls about 2-and-a-half years old, sitting on what I thought were booster seats,” Decker said.

But after doing a double take, she realized they weren’t booster seats, they were child port-a-potties.

“She had to undo the jumpsuits, and take them all the way down so they were completely nude, with the jumpsuits down to their ankles just eating their chicken nuggets, sitting on little toddler potties,” Decker said.

The photo Decker posted on her Facebook profile has since gone viral and has parents across the country talking. Men’s News Daily headlines its version of the story saying “civilization is over.” Amy Alkon wrote in the post advocating for the use of technology, like cellphone cameras, to “impose the constraints (like shaming)” on rude actions like this. Melissa Lawrence on the Cloud Mom blog writes:

Although I try my hardest not to judge other moms, I was TOTALLY grossed out by the image of a mom potty training her nude toddlers while they snacked on chicken nuggets at a Utah restaurant.  Potty training stinks, no pun intended.  I’ve done it four times and I’m not looking forward to number five.

When people go out to eat, they deserve to enjoy their meal, not to be exposed to pooping toddlers.  And I’m leaving the smell and sanitation components out of it.  Sorry, but to me this mom made the wrong choice.

Decker told KSL it was busy in the deli at the time and patrons included men at a business meeting.

KSL reports a spokesperson for the deli saying staff didn’t realize what was going on until it was too late. The restaurant received several complaints from patrons.

      Where did this mother grow up? IN a CAVE? The Manager of this restaurant should have shown her the door (permanently) #1: I’m sure it’s against EVERY HEALTH REGULATION (CODE) known to man. #2: The Owner/the Franchise owner spends $$$ to advertise their restaurant. WHO would come into a restaurant to see this??? I also think other patrons could possibly SUE this establishment for allowing this to go on in the public area. IN A WORD: THIS IS DISGUSTING!! There is no excuse.

      How sick and disgusting not to mention the smell. What a horrid mother, who has no concern for other people who paid for their food, which I’d have demanded my money back.
      WHERE do these idiots come from? When the kid is 3 he’ll pull his own pants down and dump right there without a little potty chair, but my guess is that idiot mother wouldn’t even notice.

      I doubt it’s a case of “white trash” more like one of those parents who think their kid is “oh so cute” and think that everything their kid does is perfect….and think that you should think everything their kid does is great too. People like that usually aren’t poor; I wouldn’t be surprised if this dingbat is very well-off financially and spoils her daughters and never tells them “no”.

      My feeling is that the restaurant was blindsided just as the patrons were. Somehow I don’t think this is part of the customer relations manual. There is NO WAY this mother is operating with a full deck.

      Oh wow. Apparently, except for STA, most of you missed that I was being sarcastic!! The point is, once people start excusing doing things in public that should be done in private, just because it’s a “natural function”, that all bets are off. When my wife breastfed, she did it in private. Because she has class!! And we when potty trained our kids, we did that in private too. This woman’s behavior…and frankly, many of your reactions to my post, as well…just demonstrates further how crass we’ve become as a society.

My point was that people have been excusing crass behavior (breast-feeding in public, using profanity, dressing like a thug or a harlot) for so long based on the excuse that it’s “natural” or “we shouldn’t judge”, that this kind of thing is just the natural progression of a society that is falling into chaos.

      When our society abandoned God, we abandoned morality. And when we abandoned morality, civility wasn’t going to be far behind.

    This article and it’s comments from people being interviewed are all completely focused on not being around poop while eating their meals. (selfish and narcissistic). YOU PEOPLE ARE BACKWARDS. The main focus SHOULD BE these little girls and how they are being treated – like cattle!!!!!…… Obviously these girls are just sitting there eating with no problem being nude and doing their business in front of strangers in public – OBVIOUSLY THIS HAS BEEN DONE BEFORE WITH THIS MOTHER. These girls are being taught that their bodies are not their own and to be shared (like in those books 1984, Animal Farm, and Brave New World.) Hello??? Is anybody home??? HUGE RED ALERT!!!!! My child’s training potty was around the corner and in another room AT HOME and she automatically knew, with human instincts, that this was a private matter. I bet these girls also watch disgraceful child abuse “entertainment show” Toddlers and Tiaras on that dumb TLC – The “Learning” Channel. Our country has gone to hell and this “Mother” whom has completely no morals and probably will prostitute her children in exchange for a Limo ride in their futures,… she should be charged and have these kids taken away… to where, who the hell knows… the only people left with realistic old fashioned morals who busted their ass for us are dying in nursing homes… and totally ashamed and embarrassed to be Americans.

I’d wager she was just a) liberal, but b) one of those progressive parenting types like the Canadian couple who ‘didn’t want to tell anyone their baby’s gender because they want he/she to decide for themselves and not be assigned a gender role.’ That or she’s down right crazy or lazy. But I’m curious, after the child did her business, did the mother carry out the toilet and jump dump the contents on the grass? Ugh, be still my gag reflex.       In the past certain countries in the 3rd world they curb their children when doing this. But it definitely did not happen at the deli, cafe or restaurant. It was due to not having public toilets etc. Not only that but they have stopped the practice.

    A similar situation for me in a food court! A woman of Eastern India or Pakistan descent changed her chhild’s dirty diaper right on the table! I chalked it up to cultural differences. Mr. Obama and CNN’s Fareed Zakaria keep pushing for 3rd world behavior! I wonder if HoneyBOOBOO had greater ratings last night against the DEM Conv. as the Media stated it was for the GOP Conv.?!

      Although, I have never had twins, I DID have girls that were 18 months apart and were potty training not too far apart. If one had to go to the bathroom, I took them both and had them go. After all, you cannot leave a child at the table alone, which is what she will claim. She is just lazy, lazy, lazy.

      Utah is heavily populated with Mormons as we all know, approximately 63%. This disgusting white, blonde woman could have been raised Mormon, but if she was, the teaching did not take hold.

    Why didn’t any of the PATRONS (not patients) confront this lady? Why do we think it is more appropriate to snap a picture and put it on the internet than to just go to the lady and have a discussion?

    We just don’t want to get involved anymore.

    After all, what if I’m wrong. What if it really IS ok to let my toddler make a stinky in the middle of the restaurant?

      If she was nut case enough to do what she did, confronting her could have got ugly. She obviously has “I can do what I want, where I want, when I want, mentality.” She did not give a rip what anyone thought, and would have got very defensive if called on it. This was a management problem, and should have been brought to their immediate attention. She should be banned from food establishments unti her kids are old enough to go potty properly, in private. This was disgusting and completely unsanitary for all the resturants patrons.

      I agree, but people do not discuss things anymore, they usually immediately default to angry, cursing, screaming, ranting and even physical violence over the dumbest little things. I am sure this mom making a ridiculous choice to potty train her daughters at the table in a restaraunt would have claimed victimhood and started to attack anyone who dared to point out the shockingly inappropriate nature of her decision. If she was dumb enough to think this is OK, then try to imagine how she would accept what I consider constructive criticism.

      Do not pay for your meal. Do not take another bite of it. Call for the manager & get it in writing as to why you are not paying & that the manger acknowledges it & agrees..

      If the manager says that they are going call the police, you call the public health officials. Don;t yell or make a scene but be firm. Snap pictures of the ugly mother & her children as proof.

      Guarantee you that deli, restaurant & cafe staff will put a stop to this in the future if you do this.

      Except a deli run by nut, fruits & flakes in granola land.

      Just wondering how convenient it was for this woman with twins to carry them, their port-a-potties and all their crap to the table and since it was a deli, how she ordered her food and got it to the table as well. This wasn’t for convenience – it was done purposefully to be noticed, and then probably want to sue when confronted by her bad behavior. Shame on everyone involved – for their lack of involvement.

    Yep its wrong, but all I could think of is if that woman was caught in the act taking that picture she’d have to talk her way out of being arrested for child pornography. Taking the photo was dumb in my opinion now shes famous for a taking a picture of someone little kid naked and taking a dump and spreading it to the nation.

    In our books, thats a perv. or an attention whore who wanted her 30 seconds of fame.

    Americans have turned into the most despicable and disgusting people on earth. They no longer have manners, decency or courtesy. I am sure there are millions Liberals who think its funny if anything and should be acceptable. Only SQUARES would take any offense. Did the family leave the crap for the waiters to clear away?

    The police should have been called.

      This is pure inept ‘Dumb’ on behalf of this mothers parenting skills. Some people just fail when it comes to possessing basic commonsense. However, I disagree with your broad brush statement that ‘Americans have turned into the most despicable and disgusting people on earth.’ Having lived in several countries outside of the US, that ‘title’ belongs with foreign nationals that look the other way when parents whore their children to their neighbors for money, or behead subjects for finding peace within another religion. This example is just plain ‘ol dumb!

      This mother is too young to have been influenced by Dr. Spock, and she has probably never heard of Letitia Baldridge. Wonder where she got the idea that this disgusting display of no etiquette was acceptable in a food establishment.. Remnds me of the 60′s with the hippies kids running around with no underwear.

      I agree, Mr. PIG must watch his language. That is just unacceptable.
      To be honest, I’d rather some little kid urinate on one of my shrubs
      (after all, the dogs,birds,etc all do it)
      than to do it next to me while I’m eating.
