Radio Host Pranks DNC Delegates With Question About Banning Corporate Profits — And Many Agree With Him

Radio talk show host and erstwhile Senate candidate Peter Schiff has a long track record of trying to reason with his opponents, or at least engage with them fairly. The Connecticut based libertarian has taken on Lawrence O’Donnell on his home turf at MSNBC and most recently, even tried to engage with members of Occupy Wall Street in an 18 minute video that went viral last year.

Now, Schiff is back with a video from the DNC. Except this time, he’s taken on a rather different approach to engaging with his opponents. That is, rather than advocate his own views, he has shot video of himself playing devil’s advocate for what many would consider to be a completely ridiculous extension of his opponents’ philosophy.

Schiff’s target in this case is the Democrats’ seeming antipathy to corporate profits, which he attacks by pretending to be a radical Leftist who wants to ban corporate profits altogether, just to see if he can get any Democrats to agree with this economically absurd idea.

So while there’s not nearly universal agreement on the idea, and some people in the video force Schiff to moderate his position and others simply nod along politely, the video certainly shows a high degree of sympathy with the goal. And the immediate positive (and enthusiastic) reactions of several delegates, including one who enthusiastically calls for “corporate losses,” may strike some readers as either entertaining or disturbing.

However, it should be noted that Schiff’s tactic is highly questionable from a journalistic perspective (tactics we’ve criticized in the past), and we would warn against taking his results as representative of the entire convention, or as some kind of titanic revelation about what all Democrats believe. It is revealing (and funny) but still based on a false premise. And information gleaned from false premises can sometimes come back to haunt you.

This story has been updated.

In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Find out more HERE.

My cousin is a delegate and she had some fun yesterday- ln a loud vice she called out to 3 different groups and said you Dummie! She almost died laughing when they all nearly broke their necks turning to her. In another group she called out you Pecker wood and they did the same thing. If it sounds good the whole group will go along with it.

I’m all for people paying their fair share; I struggle to make 2/3 of the average welfare package’s worth and pay taxes, boy do I pay taxes. Every bill I pay has a fee or tax so someone else can have the same benefit for free. If your welfare package is worth 1/3 more than what I make, Why aren’t you paying any taxes? The middle class is democrat’s code word for welfare reciepiants; I don’t want you to pay for anything I have or do, just tired of being forced to pay for YOURS!!!!

LOL! The DNC must have 1000′s of these idiots. What is this the 4th interviewer comically mocking the DNC attendees? Did they ever find any that were able to put 2 and 2 together? These people are hilariously oblivious.
By the way, I looked on Wikipedia to see what they had to say about Liberalism and Progressivism… there is almost no mention of Marxism and little mention of socialism and communism. They are filled with praise and ignore important controversial topics. But look at Social Conservatism and it’s full of liberally biased rhetoric and redundant adjectives… e.g. permissive Liberalism vs restrictive Conservatism. I find this laughable after seeing these funny videos of Democrats talking about being the adoration of removing choices in all areas except sexual and when the interviewer did everything to make obvious their hypocrisies short of waving a “YOU’RE BEING A HYPOCRITE” sign in front of their faces and they remained completely oblivious. So many hilarious interviews at the DNC!

I don’t agree with Ron Paul but what troubles me is that because I don’t agree with him I’m labeled a Neo-Con and other names. Same with Democrats, if I don’t agree with Obama I’m racist and other inappropriate names.

Explain that with no profits Apple won’t make a Iphone 6 or 7 – Etc. Also, explain that if they work for Apple they will have to work for free. This is talking to a young generation that have Iphone 1,2,3,4 and 5. Our neighbors daughter has her credit card maxed out on these phones and has them all and can’t wait for the next one.

Today’s democratic party is basically a neo-communist party, that if given the chance would implement (using any and all means) an economic and political system here in the USA that would be a clone of that which existed in the former USSR.
People have got to wake up and understand that the democrats and Marxist-Leninists are one and the same. They love Castro, Chavez and frankly, they loved Lenin, Honnecker and Mao.
The democrats are not stupid nor ignorant; they have a totalitarian ideology which they WILL impose on all of us. Their policies are intentional and purposeful, NOT incompetent, for their goal is the total destruction of the USA as we know it.

In all seriousness, how can you co-exist with people like this? These are our countrymen. How do you compromise with this? How do you find common ground? There is NO congruent way to support this point of view and the constitution…heck freedom.

There is no unity. There is only win and loss from either side. So if liberty wins they lose. Will they go away or accept? How about the other way? You going to lay down and accept tyranny if they win?

We seriously need to Balkanize this thing. Let the freedom loving people go one way and the tyranny lovers go another. It’s time for a civil parting of ways…a peaceful secession. Let’s make it happen.

The solution is dirt simple; if you receive more than you pay in then you don’t vote. Period.

That motivates people to earn and save rather than steal and spend.

      It really is that simple.

Our current model is not only impractical, it’s immoral. My momma told me that it was morally wrong to leave your car/house unlocked; it temped weak people to get themselves in trouble and real thieves would just break in anyway. I can’t see any way to disagree with that simple wisdom…

That is why on exiting the building and a woman asked him what kind of government we had, his reply was “A Republic madam, If you can keep it.” His contention was that if people who lived off government subsidy were allowed to vote, they would always vote for the candidate that promised them the most largess until it got into a bidding war that would bankrupt the nation…sound familiar?

Things are too easy for most Americans to inspire them to revolt. But you’re definitely right on the mark when you say there is no compromise, no way to alter these people’s perceptions on life. The Democratic party is composed of white women, minority men and a few white men who have been emasculated by their wives to the point where they hate their own sack dangling between their legs. Suffrage is what has caused all of this, there is a reason the bible calls for women to be obedient to their husbands it’s because they lack logic. As far as the minority men in the Democratic party I have spoken to many of my mexican friends and they say they would never vote for Republicans becuase it’s a party of old white men.
White men made this country great then we allowed women and minorities to tear it down. Don’t worry we’ll rebuild it better than before and some day we’ll have all of these women and brown people properly trained. It’s the white man’s destiny to civilize the world.

@Rothbard–Generally, I am overwhelmed with the desire to flee the presence of Progressives spouting these ‘economically absurd’ beliefs (with smoke and question marks curling from the top of my head), and occasionally worried of a physical attack by one or a group as I voice my opposition. Even the grey-haired ladies can be vile. I’ve asked myself if I will always be so lucky as to simply walk away.
So far, my fight back plan against their eternal ignorance has been concentrated on accomplishing two things, 1.) supporting the best possible candidates at ALL levels of government, and to 2.) physically move to a U.S. state in which the majority of people hold conservative ideas.

Honestly, the horrifying idea of a civil war occurring between states or regions of states is something I’m not mentally prepared for, as these thoughts can momentarily stop me in my tracks while carrying out my daily duties as a mother, wife and employee. I can’t imagine myself acquiring much of a weapons arsenal, or ever being completely prepared for such a calamity, but how could I not even try? I have chosen to consider it as just one more disruptive and deadly thing in life that can come roaring up my driveway to ruin my day, for which I had better be prepared to handle, just as I have always done in preparing for a major natural disaster.

Of course, before we all come to blows, I wonder, should we be more creative and try something else first, such as to stop funding their antics and misuse of our money—we could ALL simply not put the tax check in the mail.

Roth, I’ve been reading your posts and others for quite some time and this is the first grasp of the true reality we ALL face. Can anyone name any civilization or country in recorded history that has taken back their liberty and freedom without the cleansing of blood?

Don’t people realize that our government is made up of fellow citizens who are justifying their position through the power of the their own legislative action? You think these people will ever let freedom lovers see what they have done to us the last 20-30 years while serving in their roles in government?

In 1990, I met the relative of a former French ambassador to the US, he told me of the running joke going around DC in the 50′s/60′s, “it is better to rule an ignorant people than to represent an educated people”. Laughing and toasting all the way to the polls.

Why does the fed gov employ more psychologists/psychiatrists than any entity on the planet? They know you/us better than you think and they know how to manipulate the population.

No, our fellow citizens in government are people who have committed haneous/illegal/treasonous actions against their fellow citizens for power and money. You think they are going to give that up, subject their family, kids, friends to the embarrassing truths of their actions and risk losing all for you/us?

At some point it is going to happen, better elect Romney to get a little breathing room for us all and prepare, make a plan, build a network locally

You seem to forget liberals lie, they to us and lie to themselves. They say they would not mind a cut in pay or to pay more taxes because it’s easy to say such things sound charitable ir like a giving person not selfcentered. But, just like Warren Buffet they will potest with all their might about paying what they have agreed too.

You seem like a smart man, you should know when a liberal is lying, anytime they are talking.

Let’s use $250,000 as the magic “allowable” income / profit level since that is the amount you are allowed to make before you start getting penalized for making more than that under the Democrat plan. After all, who needs any more than 250K per year, right?

So then, lets say the Powerball goes up to $150 Million and one of these guys wins. By their own logic, they should be more than happy to only receive $250K of the $150 Million and give the rest to the government, right? Additionally, at the end of the year, anything they’ve made from wages, tips, or other compensation during that year should also be completely forfeit since they got the $250K in one lump sum. In other words, if they had a job, they worked that year for free. Finally, they should want to pay their “fair share” of taxes on the $250K that they won.

Somehow, I think they’d be singing a different tune if they had brainpower enough to think of what they were saying before they spoke.

The writer’s comment, “it should be noted that Schiff’s tactic is highly questionable from a journalistic perspective (tactics we’ve criticized in the past), and we would warn against taking his results as representative of the entire convention, or as some kind of titanic revelation about what all Democrats believe” is actually very telling about people in general.

When you can tap into a person’s emotions, and use it smartly, you can get them to believe and act on anything.

Every bit of information presented to us every day is emotionally charged to elicit a desired response.

Unfortunately, before the rational mind has a chance to catch up to the emotional mind, the damage has already been done.

Most of the people in this video, upon reflection, would not agree to the premise, but in the interim would vote for such legislation if it presented itself.

      I agree.

      It’s the whole “Let’s ban Di-hydrogen Mon-oxide” argument.

After several hours, twenty plus people signed the petition. Only one at the end of the experiment said “Wait! Di-hydrogen Mon-oxide is water!”

“Most propaganda is not designed to fool the critical thinker, but only to give moral cowards an excuse not to think at all.” – Michael Rivero

What is sad is that so many people are so easily led. The thought of a rational, independently thinking populace left long ago. On both sides of the debate we are left with bumper sticker rhetoric.

Why is his tactic questionable? Is it his responsibility to to give each one of the brainless wonders some common sense, before he asks a question,or makes a statement? It’s not my fault, or Schiffs fault that there are a multitude of people running around this planet, who dont have sense enough to poor piss out of a boot….with the instructions on the heel……….

To be fair, and the article itself notes this, this kind of journalistic tactic is little more than “leading the witness”. Also, he has the luxury of picking and choosing who gets to be in the video. For all we know, 80% of the mob there were either silent or disagreed.

There are easier ways to bring most Leftists into concensus with a bad idea that employ honesty and doesn’t force one to cherry pick the suckers out of the pack.

But Ghost, thats exactly why the democratic party has been taken over by progressives, because they are so easily led. They think purely emotionally rather than sensibly. Progressives understood this and have exploited it, there are progressives in the republican party, but thats a much tougher fight and I actually think they are losing ground thanks to the TEA party.

GHOST, I see what you are pointing out, but for once I tend to disagree with you. Even though I am in the south, there are more than enough liberals down here. I’ve asked them similar questions and pretty much got the same reaction. The word “PROFIT” is a dirty word to these people and they just will not see how it really works to their favor. Talk about wanting to kill the goose that lays the golden egg, they fail to understand who pays the majority of the taxes in this nation.

THE ARTICLE NOTES THIS. I’m on your side, or haven’t you seen my posts regarding taxes, firearms, defending traditional Christians and advocating capitalism? You’re so quick to berate and call names based on, apparently, no experience with your opponent, but with the zeal of joyful ad hominem. Just like Alinsky says you should.

Examine your premises. If you’re going to beat our common enemy, the Left, you have to play by rules OTHER THAN THEIRS. Get it? If you can trap them in their stupidity through honest means, you score a home run. If you have to use THEIR TACTICS and cherry pick, all you do is play a game that THEY INVENTED AND CONTROL. Get it yet? Again, the article mentions that this is a bad tactic to use. Did you even BOTHER to read the article before you sneered at me?

I don’t disagree Stelex. What I’m saying is, get them with honest means, which leaves them incapable of a defense or even being able to contemplate mounting a defense. When you play by dirty rules, you are entering very familiar territory for them, and they win.

I don’t disagree with that but it is a problem to fight a purely fair fight with people who don’t. These people don’t even understand they are being used, something has to be done to point this out. Showing the hypocritical nature of they’re claims may be one way to enlighten some.

Hmmm where do the Left derive most of their voting bloc? Maybe women and minority men? We all know great countries are made by women and brown men. White men can’t make a good country look at most of South America, all great countries. Look at Spain much better country than Germany. Portugal and Puerto Rico way better than America. Since women have had the right to vote look at how much more freedom and prosperity we have now.

I know many Mexicans and blacks who do the same. I know there are White men who are Dems too…so please don’t make this about race and sex. Its not. Its about morons and educated people. Sadly because of the Dems there are a majority of the minorities out there voting for the wrong reasons and the wrong people. But please don’t categorize us all as morons. (P.S.
